Salary by post: TNPSC pay levels and bank pay scales

By the PrepMatic team · Updated · 36 pages

TNPSC notifications do not print a rupee salary. They print a pay level from the Tamil Nadu pay matrix, so a Village Administrative Officer is "Level 8" and a Deputy Collector is "Level 22". Bank notifications work the other way round: they print the full pay scale, such as ₹48,480 rising to ₹85,920 for a Probationary Officer. This section takes one post at a time, gives the level or scale exactly as the notification states it, and explains what is added to or taken from that basic pay.

A level or scale is basic pay only. What reaches your bank account depends on allowances and deductions that the government or the bank revises from time to time, so no honest page can quote one fixed "salary" for a post. Each page here shows the basic pay range, lists the kinds of allowance and deduction, and points to the order or notification where current rates are published.

Pick a post below. TNPSC posts are grouped by the exam that fills them (Group 1, Group 2 and 2A, Group 4) and bank posts by recruiter (IBPS, SBI, RBI).

TNPSC pay levels in rupees

The Tamil Nadu Revised Pay Rules, 2017 replaced pay bands and grade pay with a level-based pay matrix. Schedule-I of G.O. Ms. No. 303 (Finance, Pay Cell), dated 11 October 2017 gives the lowest and highest pay of every level. These are the levels used by the posts in this section.

Under Rule 8 of the 2017 rules, a person appointed to government service for the first time by direct recruitment has pay fixed at the first stage of the level. For a Junior Assistant that is ₹19,500. After that, one annual increment moves your pay one cell down the same level, and the order gives two extra increments when a post-holder in Levels 1 to 23 is awarded Selection Grade or Special Grade.

Levels are printed in the post tables of the Group 4, Group 2 and 2A and Group 1 notifications. For a group-level overview of how pay and promotion differ, see TNPSC salary by group.

How to read a bank pay scale

Bank scales are written as steps. The scale for IBPS PO and SBI PO in the 2026 notifications is ₹48,480-2000/7-62,480-2340/2-67,160-2680/7-85,920. Read it left to right: start at ₹48,480, take seven annual increments of ₹2,000 to reach ₹62,480, then two of ₹2,340 to reach ₹67,160, then seven of ₹2,680 to reach ₹85,920. That is 16 increments in all.

Some recruiters add advance increments for a joining grade or qualification. The SBI PO advertisement, for example, gives a starting basic of ₹48,480 plus four advance increments, and the SBI Junior Associate advertisement starts graduates at ₹26,730 on a scale that begins at ₹24,050. The bank pages in this section, such as SBI PO, IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk and RBI Grade B, show each scale as printed.

From basic pay to in-hand pay

Gross pay is basic pay plus allowances. Take-home pay is gross pay minus deductions. The usual building blocks are:

  • Dearness allowance (DA): a percentage of basic pay, revised periodically by the employer under the government order or pay settlement that applies to the post.
  • House rent allowance (HRA) and city compensatory allowance: depend on where you are posted, and HRA is not paid where you are given official accommodation.
  • Other allowances: medical, travel and department-specific allowances, as the employer's rules provide.
  • Deductions: your contribution to the pension or provident fund the post carries, professional tax, income tax and any insurance or loan instalments.

Because DA and HRA rates change, quote a percentage only from a dated order. The Tamil Nadu Finance Department publishes pay and allowance orders for state posts, and each bank's recruitment notification states what applies to its officers and clerks.

Frequently asked questions

Is the level range the same as the salary I will get?

No. The range is the minimum and maximum basic pay of the level. A new recruit starts at the bottom, and allowances then raise the gross pay while deductions reduce the take-home pay.

Why does a TNPSC notification show only a level?

State government pay is fixed by the pay matrix, and the matrix is published separately in the pay rules. The notification therefore names the level of each post, and for corporation or board posts it sometimes prints a scale of its own instead.

Which TNPSC posts have the highest pay level?

In the 2025 Group 1 notification all six posts are at Level 22. The Group 2 posts covered here sit at Levels 16 and 18, and Group 2A and Group 4 posts range from Level 3 to Level 12.
