What is added to basic pay

Dearness allowance is added on basic pay, and house rent allowance and any city compensatory allowance follow the place of posting. Deductions include professional tax, income tax and the retirement-scheme contribution for the post. Annual increments move pay one cell down Level 22 on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October, set by your date of joining.

What the post involves

The notification does not list duties. In the Labour Department, an Assistant Commissioner typically deals with labour law enforcement and industrial relations in an area: conciliating disputes between employers and workers, supervising the inspectors who check that establishments follow labour laws, and deciding matters assigned to the post under those laws.

Promotion

The Labour Department's higher officer posts follow under its service rules and seniority, with each promotion carrying a higher level. Annual increments raise pay in between.

How to get the post

  • Qualification: a degree, with post-specific conditions in para 4.2 of the notification.
  • Prelims: a screening paper of 200 questions for 300 marks (General Studies 175, Aptitude 25).
  • Mains: a qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test and three General Studies papers of 250 marks each.
  • Interview: 100 marks, so the final rank is on 850 marks.
