Bank PO vs clerk: which job and which exam to target first
On this page
A bank PO (Probationary Officer) joins the officer cadre at JMGS-I, and a bank clerk (officially the IBPS Customer Service Associate or the SBI Junior Associate) joins the clerical cadre. In the 2026 notifications the PO scale starts at ₹48,480 basic and the clerical scale at ₹24,050. PO selection has a descriptive paper and an interview, while clerk selection is on mains marks alone. If you are eligible for both, prepare for PO first, because the prelims subjects are shared and a clerk application adds little extra preparation.
PO vs clerk at a glance
| Feature | Bank PO | Bank clerk |
|---|---|---|
| Cadre | Officer, JMGS-I | Clerical |
| Official post names | Probationary Officer / Management Trainee (IBPS), Probationary Officer (SBI) | Customer Service Associate (IBPS), Junior Associate (Customer Support and Sales) (SBI) |
| Age, 2026 cycle | IBPS 20 to 30, SBI 21 to 30 | 20 to 28 |
| Stages | Prelims, Mains with descriptive, a personality or psychometric test, Interview | Prelims, Mains, local language test if needed |
| What decides the final list | IBPS: Mains 80, Interview 20. SBI: Mains 75, Group Exercise and Interview 25 | Mains marks only |
| Posting | IBPS PO is an all-India cadre | State or Union Territory you apply for |
| Local language test | None for IBPS PO | Yes, unless you studied the language in school |
What the two jobs involve
The post names show the emphasis. A Customer Service Associate works on customer service in the branch, and SBI's Junior Associate (Customer Support and Sales) adds sales to the title. A Probationary Officer joins as a probationer and is trained for officer responsibilities. Actual duties vary by bank and branch, so ask someone working in the bank you are targeting before you decide on the work alone.
SBI PO comes with commitments: a two-year probation and, per the 2026 advertisement, a joining bond of ₹2 lakh to serve at least three years. Read the bond clause for any exam before applying.
Salary: what the notifications print
| Post | Printed basic pay scale | Starting basic |
|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO, IBPS SO, SBI PO (JMGS-I) | ₹48,480 rising to ₹85,920 | ₹48,480 (SBI PO adds 4 advance increments) |
| IBPS Customer Service Associate | ₹24,050 rising to ₹64,480 | ₹24,050 |
| SBI Junior Associate | ₹24,050 rising to ₹64,480 | ₹26,730 (two advance increments for graduates) |
These are basic pay only. The IBPS PO notification adds allowances as per the rules of the bank you are allotted. For total pay, the 2026 SBI PO advertisement states an approximate CTC of ₹21.97 lakh at Mumbai, and the SBI Junior Associate advertisement quotes total starting emoluments of around ₹46,000 a month at a metro such as Mumbai. These are advertisement figures, not promises of take-home pay, which depends on city, bank and deductions. Pre-2024 articles that quote ₹36,000 or ₹19,900 as the starting basic are out of date.
Selection: how the exams differ
| Stage | PO | Clerk |
|---|---|---|
| Prelims | 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes, three separately timed sections | 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes, three separately timed sections |
| Mains | IBPS PO: 170 objective questions for 200 marks in 160 minutes, plus a 25-mark descriptive paper. SBI PO: 170 questions for 200 marks plus a 30-mark Communication Skills paper | IBPS CSA: 160 questions, 200 marks, 125 minutes, no computer section. SBI JA: 190 questions, 200 marks, 160 minutes |
| After mains | Personality or psychometric test, then interview | Local language test only if needed |
Two details are worth knowing. IBPS PO prelims give unequal marks (English 30, Quant 30 for 35 questions, Reasoning 40 for 35 questions), while the CSA prelims are equal at 30, 35 and 35 marks. And sectional cut-offs apply in IBPS prelims, but the SBI PO and SBI Junior Associate prelims have none and are ranked on the aggregate. The full patterns are on the IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk and SBI PO pages.
On difficulty, the PO adds layers: advanced data interpretation, banking and economy awareness, descriptive writing and the interview. Clerk preparation is mostly speed in 35 to 40 question sections. The numbers of applicants and vacancies change every cycle, so no guide can honestly call one exam "easier".
Posting, transfers and promotion
- IBPS PO: an all-India cadre. The notification says you may be posted anywhere in India or outside it, so be sure you can relocate.
- Clerk posts: vacancies are state-wise. You apply for one State or Union Territory only. SBI Junior Associates get no inter-circle or inter-state transfer before five years of service.
- Promotion: this is bank policy and is not in the recruitment notifications, so there is no single official timeline. Both cadres have internal promotion routes, and officers start on a higher scale. Ask serving employees how long each step takes in the bank you want, and be careful with any guide that quotes exact years.
- Moving from clerk to officer: a serving clerk can also take the PO exam like any graduate within the age limit. Check your bank's service rules.
Which should you target first?
| Your situation | Suggested first target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General category, 29 or 30 years old | PO | The clerk age limit is 28 before relaxations |
| Final-year student | SBI PO and SBI Junior Associate | SBI accepts provisional applications; IBPS needs the degree on registration day |
| Aiming for the officer cadre, age 20 to 28 | PO, with clerk as a second application | Prelims subjects overlap, so one plan covers both |
| Short on time, under four months | Clerk | No separate data analysis section, descriptive paper or interview to prepare |
| Want a posting in your home state | IBPS Clerk or RRB Office Assistant | Vacancies are state-wise and the local language is expected |
You can apply for a PO exam and a clerk exam in the same year. Each is a separate recruitment with its own fee and application, as the bank exams list shows. Check the eligibility rules for the exact age date and degree rule of each.
Preparing for both in one plan
Start with the shared base: Quant, Reasoning and English in sectional practice, as the beginner roadmap describes. Layer PO-only mains work (advanced data interpretation, descriptive writing, interview preparation) on top once prelims is stable. Keep a clerk-style speed drill going alongside, since both prelims reward fast, accurate sections.
PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows which of Quant, Reasoning and English is weakest. The study plan then uses your exam date, daily hours and study days, and you can take full-length mocks or shorter custom mocks focused on weak subjects.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, bank PO or clerk?
It depends on what you want. PO starts on a higher scale in the officer cadre, with a longer selection and an all-India posting for IBPS. Clerk has a shorter selection, no interview and state-wise vacancies. Compare the table above against your age, degree timing and how long you can prepare.
Can I apply for both PO and clerk in the same year?
Yes. They are separate recruitments with separate applications and fees, and their prelims cover the same three subjects. The tradeoff is that you need to keep to each exam's schedule.
What is the salary of a bank PO?
The 2026 notifications print a starting basic of ₹48,480 for IBPS PO and SBI PO, with allowances on top as per bank rules. The SBI PO advertisement gives an approximate CTC of ₹21.97 lakh at Mumbai. Actual in-hand pay depends on city, bank and deductions.
Is the bank clerk exam easier than PO?
The clerk has fewer stages and no descriptive paper or interview, but the clerk prelims is tightly timed and IBPS applies sectional cut-offs. The relative difficulty changes with each cycle's vacancies and applicants.
Is the IBPS Clerk exam still called Clerk?
IBPS now calls the post Customer Service Associate (CSA). SBI calls its clerical post Junior Associate (Customer Support and Sales). Aspirants still search for "clerk", so both names appear on this site.
