GATE eligibility for 2027 is broad: you can apply if you are in the third year or above of any undergraduate degree, or have completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities. There is no age limit and no limit on the number of attempts. If you have not applied yet, note the timing: the regular registration window for GATE 2027 closed on 5 October 2026, and the late-fee window closes on 12 October 2026.

GATE eligibility: who can apply, degree by degree

GATE does not ask you to be a final-year student. What matters is the degree you are studying or have finished, and how far along you are. The table below follows the GATE 2027 brochure.

DegreeYou can apply from
B.E. / B.Tech. / B.Pharm.3rd year
B.Arch. (5-year), Naval Architecture, Planning (4-year)3rd year
B.Sc. (Research) / B.S.3rd year
Pharm.D.3rd year
MBBS, BDS, BVSc, AYUSH degrees5th semester
M.Sc. / M.A. / MCA1st year
Integrated M.E. / M.Tech. (post-B.Sc.)1st year
Integrated or dual degree (5-year)3rd year
B.Sc. / B.A. / B.Com. / BCA (3-year)3rd year
Integrated M.Sc. / B.S.-M.S.3rd year
B.Sc. Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry (4-year)3rd year
Professional-society exams such as AMIESection A completed, if recognised by MoE, AICTE, UGC or UPSC

Lateral-entry B.E. students are eligible in the 3rd year of their programme.

Two points that older articles get wrong. "Final year only" is outdated: the third year onwards is eligible. And GATE is not only for engineers: B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. and BCA students can apply too, though the choice of paper (and later admission) depends on your background.

Age limit and attempts

GATE has no age limit and no cap on attempts. You can sit it every year, and you can sit it while working.

The limits that do exist come later, from whoever uses your score:

  • PSUs set their own age limits. For example, POWERGRID's Engineer Trainee recruitment through GATE 2027 (advertisement dated 24 September 2026) has an upper age limit of 28 years as on 31 March 2027, and asks for at least 60% in the degree. Other recruiters differ, and the rules change every year.
  • Institutes set their own admission rules. M.Tech, MS and PhD programmes decide their own minimum degree marks, cut-offs and interviews.

Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job. See what to do with your GATE score for PSU and M.Tech routes, and GATE score calculation for the qualifying marks you must reach to get a scorecard.

Choosing a paper, and a second paper

You may pick a paper outside your own discipline. GATE allows it, but the institutes where you later apply decide whether they accept that paper for their programme. Check this before choosing, especially if you are moving to a different field for your M.Tech.

You can write one paper or two. The second must be on the allowed list for the first, both go in a single application, and a second application is rejected without refund. CS and EE, for example, are not an allowed pair. The full table is in the GATE exam pattern guide, which also lists all 30 papers, including the new Robotics & Automation (RA) paper.

Foreign nationals, NRIs and foreign degrees

Foreign nationals and NRIs can apply. They pay the full fee (the higher amount in the table below) and must sit the exam in an Indian city: GATE 2027 has no centres outside India. A foreign degree counts if it is a Bachelor's degree of at least three years in the same fields, and you are in its 3rd or higher year or have completed it. Foreign nationals use a passport or a government ID as proof of identity.

Documents you need

GATE 2027 registration runs through DigiLocker, which supplies your name, date of birth, mobile number, email, address and verified ID.

  • DigiLocker account. Mandatory for Indian nationals. An unverified account is allowed, but your application is scrutinised later and you must show the original ID at the centre.
  • Live face photo. Captured at registration with a webcam or a phone camera of at least 5 MP. You also upload a photo and a signature that meet the specifications.
  • Photo ID. The same ID that is verified in DigiLocker must be shown at the exam. Accepted IDs are Aadhaar (preferred), passport, PAN, voter ID or driving licence.
  • SC and ST candidates. Upload the community certificate as CATEGORY.pdf to a DigiLocker folder named GATE2027.
  • PwD candidates. Upload the UDID or PwD certificate (plus Appendix B1 or B2 where relevant) to the same folder.
  • OBC-NCL and EWS candidates. No certificate is uploaded to GATE.
  • Marksheets. The 10th, 12th and degree marksheets are not needed for GATE registration.

Fees and key dates for GATE 2027

Fees are per paper. They are the same as in GATE 2026.

CategoryRegular periodLate-fee period
Female candidates, SC, ST and PwD candidates (benchmark disability of 40% or more)₹1,000₹1,500
All others, including foreign nationals (General, OBC-NCL, EWS, male)₹2,000₹2,500

The brochure says two papers cost twice the single-paper fee. For the regular period that is ₹2,000 or ₹4,000. For the late period the two sources disagree: twice the fee would be ₹3,000 or ₹5,000, but the fee table on the GATE 2027 website shows ₹2,500 or ₹4,500. Check the amount on the payment screen in the application portal before you pay. Fees are not refunded on withdrawal. In GATE 2026, each correction to paper, city or category cost ₹500, so choose carefully the first time.

Exam cities in Tamil Nadu

You choose six exam cities, all from the same zone, and the final allotment comes on 4 January 2027. The tentative GATE 2027 list for the IIT Madras zone includes these 24 Tamil Nadu cities: Chennai South, Chennai North, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Erode, Kanchipuram, Kanyakumari-Nagercoil, Karaikudi, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Namakkal, Ooty, Pollachi, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Thanjavur, Theni, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore and Virudhunagar.

Starting preparation while you are still in college

Because third-year students can apply, many aspirants prepare alongside their classes. PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows your weakest subjects early. You then give your exam date, daily study hours and study days, and the study plan is built around them, with a Today view and a month-by-month Roadmap. The free Basic plan covers one exam with no credit card. For the full timeline, read how to prepare for GATE, and start the two sections every paper shares: General Aptitude and engineering mathematics. The GATE exam guide links to every other page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for GATE in my third year?

Yes. Students in the third year or above of a B.E., B.Tech., B.Sc., B.A., B.Com., BCA or similar undergraduate degree can apply, as can graduates of any of those. The table above lists the starting year for each degree.

Is there an age limit for GATE?

No. GATE has no age limit and no limit on attempts. Individual PSUs and institutes set their own age and percentage conditions when they use your score, so check each advertisement.

Can a B.Sc., BCA or B.Com. student write GATE?

Yes, in the 3rd year of a three-year degree or after completing it. You can choose any paper, but whether an institute accepts a paper outside your discipline for its programme is the institute's own decision, so check before you choose.

Do I need to upload my marksheets to apply?

No. The 10th, 12th and degree marksheets are not required for GATE registration. You need a DigiLocker account, a live photo, a photo and signature upload, and category documents if you claim SC, ST or PwD status.

Can I still apply for GATE 2027?

The regular window closed on 5 October 2026, and the late-fee window is scheduled to close on 12 October 2026. Earlier deadlines in this cycle were extended, so look at the important-dates page of the official site for the current position.
