IBPS, SBI, RBI and RRB bank exams
Bank exam preparation: IBPS, SBI, RBI and RRB
Bank exam preparation means clearing a multi-stage online selection run by IBPS, SBI, the RBI or NABARD. Most clerical and entry-level officer exams open with a 60-minute prelims of English, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning, then a mains with general and financial awareness, and for officers a data interpretation section, a descriptive paper and an interview. A graduate in any discipline can apply for the IBPS and SBI PO and clerk posts. The main skill is speed with accuracy across sections that are timed separately.
The patterns have changed recently, and older articles still describe the previous ones. IBPS PO prelims now give unequal marks to each section. IBPS "Clerk" is officially the Customer Service Associate, and its mains no longer has a computer section. IBPS PO added a non-qualifying Personality Test before the interview. SBI PO's descriptive paper is now "Communication Skills" (email, situation analysis, report or precis). Every page here follows the 2026 notifications instead.
Use the guides below in order: pick your exam, check you are eligible, learn the pattern, then work through the subjects and mocks. Dates on these pages are from the 2026 cycle and IBPS dates are tentative, so always confirm on the official site.

Where to start
- Complete beginner: read the bank exams list, then follow the six-month roadmap for beginners. Do not buy a stack of books before you know the pattern.
- Undecided between officer and clerk: read bank PO vs clerk. The prelims subjects overlap, so one preparation can serve both.
- Not sure you qualify: the eligibility guide covers age limits, final-year applicants, attempt limits and local-language rules. IBPS and SBI treat degree timing differently.
- Ready to go subject by subject: start with quantitative aptitude, reasoning ability and English language, then add banking awareness for mains.
- Cleared mains: go to interview preparation.
PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 multiple-choice questions with no timer, shows which of Quant, Reasoning and English is weakest before you plan your hours. The study plan is then built from your exam date, daily study hours and study days.
How the stages fit together
Prelims is a screening round in every exam above. It decides who gets to the mains, and for most posts its marks are not added to the final merit. What counts afterwards differs.
| Exam | Prelims marks in final merit? | What decides the final list |
|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO | No, qualifying only | Mains 80 : Interview 20 |
| IBPS CSA and SBI Junior Associate | No | Mains only |
| SBI PO | No | Mains 75 : Group Exercise and Interview 25 |
| RBI Grade B | No | Phase II plus Interview |
The practical lesson is that prelims is the gate, but mains is where the ranking happens. Prepare for prelims speed first, and start the mains subjects (data interpretation, banking and financial awareness, descriptive writing) early enough that they are not a scramble after the prelims result. The mock test strategy guide explains how to split your mocks between the two.
Frequently asked questions
Which bank exam should I prepare for first?
Start from the exam your age and degree allow and your target post: officer or clerk. The prelims papers of IBPS PO, IBPS CSA, SBI PO and SBI Junior Associate use the same three subjects, so most of your preparation transfers between them. Compare the roles in PO vs clerk before deciding.
How long does it take to prepare for a bank exam?
A beginner can follow a six-month plan: basics first, then sectional practice, then a mock phase. The beginner roadmap lays it out month by month. Working aspirants usually need the same months with fewer hours a day.
Is there negative marking in bank exams?
Yes in most objective tests. The SBI PO, SBI Junior Associate, IBPS CSA, IBPS RRB and RBI Assistant notifications deduct one-fourth of the marks assigned to a question for a wrong answer. Check the penalty in the notification of the exam you apply for.
Are previous year papers available for bank exams?
No bank publishes official past papers. IBPS, SBI, RBI and NABARD release information handouts with sample question types, and papers sold as "previous year" are memory-based. See mock test strategy for how to use them sensibly.
Do I need a commerce or banking degree?
No. PO and clerk posts accept a graduate in any discipline. Specialist Officer posts, such as IT Officer or Law Officer, need a specific qualification, which the IBPS SO guide lists.
