Compare posts & exams

Compare exams and posts side by side

By the PrepMatic team · Updated · 21 pages

Choosing between two exams or two posts is usually harder than preparing for either. Which one fits your qualification and age, how many stages does it have, is there an interview, where will you be posted, and what happens to your preparation if you switch? Each comparison below puts the two options in one table first, built from the latest official notification we could read, and then says who should choose which.

The pages cover posts inside one exam, such as VAO against Junior Assistant in TNPSC Group 4, whole exams against each other, such as IBPS PO against SBI PO, and exams from different families, such as GATE against CAT. Where a guide already exists, such as Group 2 vs Group 2A or Bank PO vs clerk, we link to it instead of repeating it.

How to choose between two exams

Work through four questions, in this order.

  1. Can you apply? Check the minimum qualification and the age limit for your community first. TNPSC Group 4 is open from SSLC, Group 2 and Group 1 need a degree, IBPS and SBI want a graduate, and GATE is open from the third year of a degree. Ages differ by notification: the TNPSC eligibility guide and the bank exam eligibility guide list them.
  2. How many stages, and is there an interview? A single written paper (Group 4), a screening prelims plus a mains (Group 2), or a prelims, mains and interview (Group 1, bank PO) ask for different kinds of preparation.
  3. Where will you work? A TNPSC post is in Tamil Nadu, while a bank PO is an all-India cadre and a regional rural bank requires the local language.
  4. How much of your preparation carries over? Group 4 and Group 2 share the same six General Studies units. The bank prelims share Quant, Reasoning and English. If two exams share a base, you can prepare for both at once.

What these comparisons do and do not say

  • They name the cycle. Every table says which notification it comes from, such as the TNPSC Group 4 notification of 6 October 2026 or the IBPS PO notification of 30 June 2026. Patterns change from one notification to the next, so treat each table as a snapshot and check the latest notification before you apply.
  • They avoid predictions. Vacancy counts are tentative and we do not publish cut-offs or closing ranks, since none of the official notifications give them.
  • They stay with the exams. For exams outside TNPSC, banking, GATE and NEET (UPSC, SSC, JEE Main, ESE, CAT), the pages keep to the stable, well-known structure and send you to the official site for the current details.

To go deeper into one exam, start from its hub: TNPSC, Bank exams, GATE or NEET. The TNPSC groups explained and bank exams list pages show every group and every recruitment in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Are these comparisons based on the latest notifications?

They use the most recent notification we could read for each exam: the TNPSC Group 4 notification of 6 October 2026, the Group 2 and 2A notification of 15 July 2025 and the Group 1 notification of 1 April 2025, the 2026 IBPS, SBI and RBI notifications, GATE 2027, and the NEET 2025 and 2026 cycles. A newer notification may change a figure, so each page ends with the official sources to check.

Can I prepare for two exams at the same time?

Yes, if they share a base. Cover the shared part first, then add what is specific to each. For example, the Group 4 and Group 2 prelims share their six General Studies units, and the bank prelims share Quant, Reasoning and English. Exams from different families, such as TNPSC and SSC CGL, share much less, so plan for two syllabi.

Which exam is the easiest to get into?

No honest answer exists without cut-offs, and exam difficulty depends on your strengths. Compare on what you can control: eligibility, the number of stages, the subjects you are strongest in, and the career you want.
