GATE vs CAT: which exam fits an engineering graduate?
On this page
GATE leads to M.Tech, MS and PhD admission and to PSU recruitment, while CAT leads to MBA and PGDM admission at the IIMs and many other business schools. Both are computer-based, English-only and open to repeat attempts. GATE tests a technical subject, engineering mathematics and general aptitude in 3 hours; CAT tests verbal ability, data interpretation with logical reasoning, and quantitative ability in 2 hours. The decision is really M.Tech or MBA, so start from the career you want.
GATE and CAT side by side
GATE figures are from the GATE 2027 information brochure. CAT figures describe recent papers, and the pattern can change, so confirm them on the CAT website.

What each exam tests
GATE tests depth in one subject. Your paper (30 are offered, from Civil and Mechanical to Computer Science and Data Science and AI) carries 85 marks, including engineering mathematics in many papers, and General Aptitude adds 15. The General-category qualifying mark falls between 25 and 40 out of 100 and is set from each year's results. See the GATE exam pattern and GATE score calculation.
CAT tests reasoning and language across three sections, each with its own time limit, so you cannot spend extra minutes on a section you like. An engineering background helps most in the quantitative section, while verbal ability needs its own reading practice. There is no subject syllabus to master, so preparation is mostly timed practice sets.
Time and cost of the path
An M.Tech takes two years after a GATE qualification and is typically a technical specialisation, with a scholarship for eligible candidates admitted through GATE (the GATE 2027 site cites ₹12,400 per month for M.Tech, generally for 22 months, and the admitting institute decides how many students receive it). An MBA is a two-year management programme whose fees vary widely by institute. This page does not compare fees or placements, because they differ every year and by institute.
Who should choose which
- GATE if you want deeper technical study, research, a PSU career, or a PhD. What happens after GATE shows the PSU and M.Tech routes.
- CAT if you want a management career, are drawn to business roles, and enjoy verbal and reasoning practice.
- Both is a real option for engineers, because the exams fall in different months and the preparation overlaps only in quantitative aptitude and basic reasoning. The risk is splitting your time, so decide your main goal early.
The GATE 2027 registration opened on 2 September 2026. The regular window closed on 5 October 2026 and the late-fee window ends on 12 October 2026 (check the GATE site for changes). If you decide late, check the dates first.
Preparing
If GATE is your goal, the GATE preparation strategy lays out a schedule. PrepMatic's free assessment of about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions shows your weakest subjects, and its GATE mocks can be full-length or custom, with subject-wise breakdown after each test. PrepMatic does not cover CAT.
Frequently asked questions
Can I write both GATE and CAT?
Yes. They have different eligibility and are held in different months. You can appear for both in the same academic year if you can handle both preparations.
Is a GATE score accepted for MBA admission?
GATE scores are for M.Tech, MS, PhD and PSU recruitment. MBA admissions at the IIMs use CAT, and other business schools use CAT or their own accepted exams. Check the admission page of each institute.
Which score lasts longer?
A GATE score is valid for 3 years from the result date. A CAT score is generally used for the admission cycle that follows, about one year.
