TNPSC Group 2 and 2A fill Tamil Nadu government posts, while bank PO exams (IBPS PO and SBI PO) fill officer posts in public sector banks. Both need a degree. Group 2 has a screening prelims and a mains, ranks you on one mains paper and has no interview in the 2025 scheme. A bank PO exam has a prelims, a mains with a descriptive paper, and an interview-based final stage. Group 2 posts are in Tamil Nadu, and a PO is an all-India cadre.

What really differs

Stages and uncertainty. In Group 2 your prelims score does not count, and the mains shortlist is 1:10 per reservation group. Your rank is decided by one paper, so there is no interview to prepare for. In a bank PO exam the interview carries 20 to 25 per cent of the final score, so a strong written result can still slip at the last stage.

What you study. Group 2 asks for General Studies at degree level (Tamil Nadu history and culture, polity, economy, geography, science), plus a language paper and aptitude. A PO exam asks for Quant, Reasoning, English, Data Interpretation and banking and economic awareness. Only the aptitude and reasoning base is shared, so a candidate preparing for both is running two syllabi. See the Group 2 exam pattern and the IBPS PO pattern.

Age. Group 2 allows up to 32 for Others and removes the maximum for most reserved-category candidates, while the PO ceiling is 30. If you are a general-category candidate over 30, Group 2 is the only one of the two open to you, PwBD and ex-servicemen relaxations aside.

Where you work. Group 2 jobs are in Tamil Nadu. The IBPS PO notification says an officer may be posted anywhere in India or outside it.

Who should choose which

  • Group 2 or 2A if you want to work in Tamil Nadu government, prefer no interview, are comfortable with Tamil and Tamil Nadu General Studies, or are above 30.
  • Bank PO if you want a banking career, a defined pay scale and an all-India cadre, and are stronger in English, Quant and Reasoning.
  • Both if you are 21 to 30 with a degree. Compare the calendars before you choose what to study first: the 2026 PO prelims were scheduled for August, while the 2025 Group 2 prelims was on 28 September 2025. Check the TNPSC annual planner and the IBPS calendar.

Preparing

If you plan both, build the shared aptitude and reasoning base first, then branch into Tamil Nadu General Studies (Group 2) or banking and English (PO). The TNPSC Group 2 study plan and IBPS PO preparation strategy give the two routes.

PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows your weakest subjects for either exam, and it covers both TNPSC Group 2 and 2A and banking. You can build custom mocks focused on your weak subjects. PrepMatic has no descriptive answer evaluation, so Group II Paper II and the PO descriptive paper need separate practice.

Frequently asked questions

Does Group 2 have an interview like a bank PO?

Not in the 2025 scheme. Group II and Group IIA are ranked on Main Paper II marks. Bank POs have an interview or interview-style stage after the Mains.

Which has the higher age limit?

Group 2: 32 for Others, with no maximum for most reserved-category candidates. IBPS PO and SBI PO: 30 for the general category, with relaxations for reserved categories.

Can a graduate write both in the same year?

Yes, if the dates do not clash and the age and degree rules are met. A 2026 Group 2 notification has been reported, so check the TNPSC website and the IBPS and SBI calendars for the current dates.
