For a graduate in Tamil Nadu, the closest TNPSC match to SSC CGL is Group 2 and 2A. TNPSC fills Tamil Nadu government posts and SSC CGL fills Group B and Group C posts in central government ministries and departments. Both need a degree and neither Group 2 (in the 2025 scheme) nor SSC CGL has an interview. They differ in employer, language, the speed of the first test and how you are ranked.

What changes for you

Speed against stamina. SSC CGL Tier I is 100 questions in 60 minutes, so under a minute per question across four sections. TNPSC's Group 2 prelims is 200 questions over 3 hours, with 100 on language, 75 on General Studies and 25 on aptitude and reasoning. SSC rewards quick Quant, Reasoning and English. TNPSC rewards knowledge of Tamil Nadu, Indian polity, economy and history, plus the Tamil or English language part.

The language of the exam. TNPSC offers the language part in Tamil, and its General Studies questions are set in Tamil and English. SSC CGL papers have been set in English and Hindi, so you must be comfortable in English. A Tamil-medium graduate who is weaker in English may find TNPSC the easier fit.

The mains. Group 2 has a mains with a qualifying Tamil paper. SSC CGL's later tiers are computer-based tests with their own subject papers. Read the Group 2 pattern in the Group 2 exam pattern.

Where you will work. TNPSC posts are in Tamil Nadu. An SSC CGL post is in central government offices, which may be anywhere in India. That matters more than the exam if you want to stay in Tamil Nadu.

Who should choose which

  • TNPSC Group 2 or 2A if you want a Tamil Nadu state job, are strong in Tamil, and are happy to study Tamil Nadu General Studies.
  • SSC CGL if you want a central government job, are quick at quant and reasoning, and are comfortable in English.
  • Both if you are a graduate and willing to prepare for two different syllabi. The shared base is reasoning and quantitative aptitude. The rest does not overlap much.
