NEET vs JEE Main: how the two entrance exams differ
On this page
NEET-UG is the entrance exam for MBBS, BDS and related medical courses, and JEE Main is the entrance exam for B.E. and B.Tech at NITs, IIITs and other institutes, and the first step to the IITs through JEE Advanced. Both are run by the National Testing Agency, and both are three-hour exams that give +4 for a correct answer and deduct marks for wrong ones. The subjects differ: NEET tests Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and JEE Main tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
NEET and JEE Main side by side
NEET figures are from the 2025 and 2026 cycles. JEE Main figures are the recent pattern, so confirm them in the current NTA bulletin.
| Item | NEET-UG | JEE Main (Paper 1, B.E./B.Tech) |
|---|---|---|
| Conducted by | National Testing Agency | National Testing Agency |
| Leads to | MBBS, BDS and other medical courses through national and state counselling | B.E./B.Tech at NITs, IIITs and other institutes through JoSAA; qualifying route for JEE Advanced |
| Subjects | Physics 45, Chemistry 45, Biology 90 (Botany 45 and Zoology 45) | Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, 25 questions each in the recent pattern |
| Questions | 180, all compulsory | 75 in the recent pattern |
| Total marks | 720 | 300 |
| Duration | 3 hours | 3 hours |
| Marking | +4 correct, −1 wrong, 0 unanswered | +4 correct, negative marking on wrong answers; check the bulletin for how numerical-answer questions are marked |
| Mode | Pen and paper with an OMR sheet in 2026; computer-based testing announced for 2027 | Computer-based |
| Attempts per year | One exam a year | Two sessions a year in recent years |
| Languages | 13, including Tamil | Several, including English, Hindi and Tamil |
| Minimum age | 17 years by 31 December of the admission year | Class 12 eligibility; check the bulletin |
| Qualifying rule | Percentile: 50th for General, 40th for SC/ST/OBC | Ranks decide admission; JEE Advanced takes a set number of top candidates |
NEET's 2026 cycle was unusual: the exam of 3 May 2026 was cancelled after a paper leak, and the re-examination was held on 21 June 2026. The 2027 move to computer-based testing was announced by the Union Education Minister on 15 May 2026, but NTA has not issued a 2027 bulletin. See the NEET exam pattern.
The subjects are where the choice lies
Physics and Chemistry are common to both exams, but the demand differs. NEET's questions are heavy on Biology (half the paper, 360 of 720 marks) and more recall-based. JEE Main asks for more problem-solving in Physics and Chemistry, and Mathematics is a full third of the paper. NEET's tie-break rules also look at Biology marks first.
Class 11 and 12 NCERT is the base for both, but the weights shift. A student who enjoys Biology and memory-heavy chapters is better matched to NEET, and a student who enjoys algebra, calculus and long calculations is better matched to JEE Main. Taking both is possible with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology in Class 11 and 12, but it adds a subject's workload to a demanding schedule.
Courses, counselling and Tamil Nadu
For MBBS in Tamil Nadu, the state Selection Committee ranks candidates on their NEET score, and 15 per cent of government college seats go to the All India Quota through MCC. See Tamil Nadu NEET counselling. Tamil Nadu's own engineering counselling, TNEA, has been based on Class 12 marks rather than JEE Main, so JEE Main matters in Tamil Nadu mainly for NITs, IIITs and the IIT route. Check the current TNEA rules.
Who should choose which
- NEET if you want to study medicine, dentistry or a related health course.
- JEE Main if you want engineering at an NIT, IIIT or an IIT through JEE Advanced.
- Both if you are undecided in Class 11 and willing to take four subjects. Decide before Class 12 so your last year is not split.
- Neither, if your interests lie elsewhere. Other courses have their own entrance routes.
Before you decide, read the NEET eligibility rules (Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English in Class 12, with minimum percentages), and the rules for the engineering course you want. If you are starting early, the NEET preparation from Class 11 guide helps.
PrepMatic covers NEET: its free assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows your weakest subjects, and NEET mocks match the real paper and use the +4/−1 marking. You can take them in Tamil. PrepMatic does not cover JEE Main.
Frequently asked questions
Can I write NEET and JEE Main in the same year?
Yes, if you meet the eligibility of each. You need Physics, Chemistry and Biology for NEET and Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for B.E./B.Tech via JEE Main, so you would study four subjects.
Which exam has negative marking?
Both. NEET deducts 1 mark for a wrong answer. JEE Main also has negative marking for wrong answers. Check the current JEE Main bulletin for how numerical-answer questions are marked.
Is NEET harder than JEE Main?
They test different things, so the comparison is not clean. NEET has 180 questions in 3 hours with Biology half of the paper. JEE Main has 75 in 3 hours with Mathematics a third. Choose by subject interest and by the career you want.
