GATE vs ESE: M.Tech and PSU route, or engineering services?
On this page
GATE is a single three-hour computer-based test whose score is used for M.Tech and PhD admission and for PSU recruitment. ESE (the UPSC Engineering Services Examination, earlier called IES) is a three-stage recruitment exam for Group A and Group B posts in government engineering services. GATE has no age limit and is open from the third year of a degree, while ESE needs an engineering degree and has an upper age limit. Many engineers prepare for both because the core technical subjects overlap.
GATE and ESE side by side
GATE figures are from the GATE 2027 information brochure. ESE figures are UPSC's long-standing pattern, so confirm them in the current UPSC notice.

What each exam is for
A GATE score is a ticket that others use. Institutes use it for M.Tech, MS and PhD admission, and the ministry's guidelines give GATE at least 70 per cent weightage in postgraduate admission. PSUs use it for hiring: for example, POWERGRID's advertisement of 24 September 2026 for Engineer Trainees is through GATE 2027 and sets a PSU age limit of 28 as on 31 March 2027, even though GATE itself has none. A qualified score does not itself guarantee admission or a job.
ESE is the job. Merit ranks decide which service you are allotted, such as the Indian Railway Service of Engineers, the Central Engineering Service or the Indian Defence Service of Engineers. UPSC runs it for four engineering categories only.
How the papers differ
The GATE paper is 100 marks of mostly short technical questions, with General Aptitude (15 marks), engineering mathematics (13 marks in most papers) and the subject. It rewards speed and accuracy, and the numerical (NAT) and multiple-select (MSQ) formats carry no negative marking. The GATE exam pattern gives the full marks table.
ESE has three hurdles. Prelims has an objective General Studies and Engineering Aptitude paper and an objective discipline paper. Mains is conventional, which means you write full answers for derivations, design and numerical problems. The Personality Test is an interview. So ESE asks for answer-writing practice that GATE never does, and a wider General Studies preparation.
Syllabus and dates
The technical core is shared, so one deep subject preparation serves both. The extra ESE work is General Studies, answer writing and the interview. GATE's 2027 syllabi were revised, so use the 2027 papers, not old notes. The GATE preparation strategy shows how to plan. UPSC has recently scheduled the ESE Prelims in early February, close to the GATE window, so check both calendars for a clash before you register.
For GATE 2027, registration opened on 2 September 2026. The regular window closed on 5 October 2026 and the late-fee window closes on 12 October 2026 (check the GATE site for changes).
Who should choose which
- GATE if you want an M.Tech or PhD, a PSU job, or are in the third year and want to start early. Read the GATE eligibility rules, and what happens after GATE.
- ESE if your goal is a Group A or B engineering service and you are within the age limit with a completed engineering degree in a covered discipline.
- Both if you are in a covered discipline. GATE keeps the M.Tech and PSU options open, and ESE keeps the services option open. Plan the extra ESE answer-writing and General Studies months separately.
PrepMatic helps with GATE: its free assessment (about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions) shows your weakest subjects, and GATE mocks can be full length or custom. It does not cover ESE or conventional answer writing.
Frequently asked questions
Does a GATE score count in ESE?
No. UPSC selects for ESE through its own Prelims, Mains and Personality Test. A GATE score is used by institutes and PSUs, not by UPSC for ESE.
Can I write GATE and ESE in the same year?
Yes, if you meet each exam's eligibility and the dates do not clash. Check the GATE 2027 schedule and UPSC's annual calendar.
Which is better for a PSU job?
GATE. PSU recruitments through GATE, such as POWERGRID's 2027 Engineer Trainee advertisement, use a valid GATE score. ESE leads to government engineering services, not to PSU posts.
