For most bank exams you need a degree in any discipline and an age inside the notified band: 20 to 30 for IBPS PO, 21 to 30 for SBI PO, and 20 to 28 for the clerical posts (IBPS Customer Service Associate and SBI Junior Associate). Three rules catch applicants out. IBPS requires you to be a graduate on the day you register, while SBI lets final-year students apply. SBI PO and RBI Grade B cap the number of attempts, while the 2026 IBPS notifications do not. And minimum ages differ between exams.

Age limits in the 2026 cycle

Each notification counts your age on a fixed date. The oldest birth date allowed is the first row of each pair below.

ExamAge counted onAge bandBorn between (general category)
IBPS PO1 July 202620 to 302 July 1996 and 1 July 2006
IBPS Clerk (CSA)1 August 202620 to 282 August 1998 and 1 August 2006
IBPS RRB Office Assistant1 September 202618 to 282 September 1998 and 1 September 2008
IBPS RRB Officer Scale I1 September 202618 to 302 September 1996 and 1 September 2008
SBI PO1 April 202621 to 302 April 1996 and 1 April 2005
SBI Junior Associate1 April 202620 to 282 April 1998 and 1 April 2006
RBI Grade B (General)1 April 202621 to under 302 April 1996 and 1 April 2005

IBPS RRB Officer Scale II is 21 to 32 and Scale III is 21 to 40, counted on the same 1 September 2026 date. Ph.D. and M.Phil holders get extra years in RBI Grade B (up to 34 and 32). The date moves every cycle, so recalculate from the next notification instead of reusing these birth dates.

A worked example

Two candidates look at the 2026 notifications.

  • Candidate A, general category, born 20 June 2005. On 1 July 2026 she is 21, inside the IBPS PO band. For SBI PO the age is counted on 1 April 2026, when she is 20 years 9 months, below the minimum of 21. She can apply to IBPS PO but not SBI PO.
  • Candidate B, OBC non-creamy layer, born 15 March 1994. IBPS PO adds 3 years to the upper limit, so the earliest allowed birth date becomes 2 July 1993. He qualifies on age. SBI PO's OBC limit works out the same way, with 2 April 1993 as the earliest date.

Age relaxation by category

CategoryIBPS PO, Clerk, RRBSBI PO and Junior AssociateRBI Grade B
SC / ST5 years5 years5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years3 years3 years
PwBD10 years10 years (general and EWS), 13 (OBC), 15 (SC/ST)10 years (general and EWS), 13 (OBC), 15 (SC/ST)

Other relaxations in the notifications:

  • Ex-servicemen: IBPS PO, SBI PO and RBI Grade B give 5 years to ex-servicemen and to commissioned officers, including ECOs and SSCOs with 5 years of service. For IBPS Clerk and SBI Junior Associate the relaxation is the years served plus 3, to a maximum age of 50.
  • Women: IBPS Clerk and SBI Junior Associate relax the limit for widows and divorced or judicially separated women who have not remarried, up to 35 (general and EWS), 38 (OBC) and 40 (SC/ST).
  • Experience: RBI Grade B allows up to 3 years' relaxation for officer experience in scheduled commercial banks, public sector insurers, financial institutions or the RBI, to a maximum age of 33 including that experience.

Stacking is limited. IBPS PO allows the SC/ST/OBC relaxation to combine with only one of the PwBD or ex-servicemen relaxations. SBI PO states that cumulative age relaxation is not available. Always read the exact clause for your category.

Educational qualification

Final-year students: IBPS versus SBI

This is the most common eligibility question. For IBPS PO and Clerk you must hold a mark-sheet or degree certificate showing that you are a graduate on the day you register, and the final result must be declared by the last registration date. A student still waiting for the final-semester result cannot apply. SBI is different. SBI PO and Junior Associate accept final-year or final-semester students provisionally, and you must show proof of passing by the date in the advertisement if you are called for the interview or document stage. If you are still in your final year, SBI is the exam you can apply to first.

Percentage and other degrees

IBPS PO has no minimum percentage. RBI Grade B does (see the RBI Grade B guide), and if your university gives no CGPA conversion rule, the advertisement treats 6.75 as 60% and 6.25 as 55%. IBPS RRB Scale II General Banking Officer needs graduation with at least 50% and two years as an officer in a bank or financial institution. IBPS SO posts need the exact degrees in the notification, and no equivalent qualification is accepted, so read the IBPS SO guide before applying.

Attempt limits

ExamLimit in the current notification
IBPS PO, Clerk, RRB, SONo attempt limit stated in the 2026 notifications
SBI PO6 for general and EWS; 9 for OBC and for PwBD in the general, EWS and OBC categories; no limit for SC/ST
SBI Junior AssociateNo limit stated; you can appear only once under the recruitment project
RBI Grade BGeneral and EWS candidates who have appeared 6 times in Phase I are not eligible; no limit for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD

For SBI PO, appearing in the Mains counts as a chance, and appearing only in the Prelims does not. A general-category candidate who clears prelims and sits mains on three occasions has three chances left. One who fails the prelims every time has used none.

Nationality, language and credit history

  • Nationality: the IBPS PO notification accepts Indian citizens, subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who came before 1962, and specified persons of Indian origin with an eligibility certificate.
  • Local language, clerks: IBPS Clerk and SBI Junior Associate apply by state or Union Territory and have a Local Language Proficiency Test. You are exempt if your Class 10 mark sheet (or Class 10 or 12 for SBI) shows you studied the language, so a Tamil Nadu student who studied Tamil is exempt for Tamil Nadu vacancies. The test comes after the mains and before joining, and failing it means no appointment.
  • Local language, rural banks: for IBPS RRB Office Assistant and Scale I, the state language is an essential qualification. Study of the language in Class 8 or above counts as proof, and otherwise you get six months after joining to acquire it.
  • RBI Assistant: recruitment is office-wise (see RBI Assistant), with a language proficiency test for the state of the office.
  • IBPS PO: no language test, because it is an all-India cadre and you can be posted anywhere.
  • Credit history: the IBPS PO notification has no CIBIL clause. The SBI PO 2026 advertisement originally had a clause on adverse credit history, and SBI removed it by a corrigendum dated 1 July 2026.

Checking your own eligibility

  1. Note each exam's age date and compute your age on that date, not today.
  2. Check whether your degree result will be declared by the registration date (IBPS) or the later cut-off (SBI).
  3. Count your earlier attempts if you plan SBI PO or RBI Grade B.
  4. Check the language rule for the state you want.
  5. Read the corrigenda. They can change a clause, as the SBI PO credit-history change shows.

Frequently asked questions

Can final-year students apply for bank exams?

For SBI PO and SBI Junior Associate, yes, provisionally, with proof of passing due by the date in the advertisement. For IBPS PO, Clerk, RRB and SO, no. You must already be a graduate on the registration day. See the bank exams list to compare.

What is the age limit for bank PO?

In the 2026 cycle it was 20 to 30 for IBPS PO and 21 to 30 for SBI PO, before relaxations. Reserved categories get extra years, such as 3 for OBC non-creamy layer and 5 for SC/ST.

Is there a minimum percentage for bank PO and clerk exams?

Not for IBPS PO. RBI Grade B asks for 60% in graduation (50% for SC/ST/PwBD) or 55% in post-graduation, and some other posts have their own minimum. Check the notification of the exam you are targeting.

Is a CIBIL score required for SBI PO?

Not in the 2026 cycle. The advertisement first contained a credit-history clause and a corrigendum dated 1 July 2026 removed it. The IBPS PO notification has no such clause either.

How many attempts do I get for SBI PO?

Six for general and EWS candidates, nine for OBC and for PwBD candidates of the general, EWS and OBC categories, and none restricted for SC/ST. Only mains appearances count as attempts.
