GATE 2027 registration: deadlines, fees and documents
On this page
GATE 2027 registration is done online on the GOAPS portal run by IIT Madras, the organising institute for 2027. It opened on 2 September 2026 and the regular window closed on 5 October 2026. The late-fee window is scheduled to close on 12 October 2026, and the application correction window runs from 14 to 21 October 2026. DigiLocker registration is mandatory for Indian nationals, and a live face photo is captured during the process. If you read this after 12 October, check gate2027.iitm.ac.in before assuming you can still apply.
GATE 2027 registration dates
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Registration opened | 2 September 2026 (postponed from 14 August, then from 27 August) |
| Regular window closed | 5 October 2026 (moved from 21 September, then from 27 September) |
| Late-fee window closes | 12 October 2026 (moved from 30 September, then from 5 October) |
| Application correction | 14 to 21 October 2026 |
| Exam city allotment | 4 January 2027 |
| Admit card | To be announced |
| Exam days | 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 |
| Results | 19 March 2027 |
The official site marks every date as liable to change. This cycle's deadlines already moved more than once, and GATE 2026 also extended its windows in steps (the regular window to 7 October 2025 and the late-fee window to 13 October 2025). Even so, never plan around an extension. Exam days are in forenoon (9:30 to 12:30) and afternoon (2:30 to 5:30) sessions. How the session you get is handled is explained on the GATE admit card page.
Fee per paper
| Category | Regular period | Late-fee period |
|---|---|---|
| Female, SC, ST and PwD (benchmark disability of 40% or more) | ₹1,000 | ₹1,500 |
| All others, including General, OBC-NCL, EWS, male candidates and foreign nationals | ₹2,000 | ₹2,500 |
These are the same as GATE 2026. If you take two papers, the brochure says you pay twice the single-paper fee. In the late-fee period, check the official fee table before paying for two papers, because the website's table and that rule do not line up. Withdrawal does not earn a refund, and in GATE 2026 each correction (for example a change of paper, city or category) cost ₹500. Look up the 2027 correction fee on the correction notice before you use that window.
Documents and DigiLocker
Registration uses DigiLocker, which supplies your name, date of birth, mobile number, email, address and verified ID. If your DigiLocker account is not verified, the application is allowed but scrutinised later, and you must show the original ID at the centre. Get this sorted before you open the form.
| What | Rule |
|---|---|
| Live photo | Taken during registration with a webcam or a phone camera of at least 5 MP |
| Photograph and signature | Uploaded to the specifications on the portal |
| Photo ID | The same ID verified in DigiLocker must be shown at the exam. Aadhaar is preferred; passport, PAN, voter ID or driving licence are also accepted. Foreign nationals use a passport or a government ID |
| SC/ST certificate | Upload as CATEGORY.pdf to a DigiLocker folder named GATE2027 |
| PwD proof | UDID or PwD certificate (plus Appendix B1 or B2 where relevant) in the same folder |
| OBC-NCL and EWS | No certificate is uploaded to GATE |
| Mark sheets | Class 10, Class 12 and degree mark sheets are not needed for registration |
How to register, step by step
- Check your GATE eligibility. You can apply from the third year of a UG degree, and there is no age limit or limit on attempts.
- Create or verify your DigiLocker account.
- Open GOAPS from gate2027.iitm.ac.in and register through DigiLocker.
- Choose your paper, and a second paper if you want one.
- Choose six exam cities, all from the same zone.
- Complete the live photo capture, and upload your photograph, signature and category documents.
- Pay the fee and submit. Keep the confirmation.
- Use the correction window only for genuine errors, because changes can carry a fee.
Choosing your paper
GATE 2027 has 30 papers. Two changes matter if you read older advice: Robotics and Automation (RA) is a new paper, and Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) is no longer its own paper but section XE9 inside Engineering Sciences (XE). The XE, XH and XL section codes also changed from letters to numbers. All syllabi were revised for 2027.
- You may take one paper or two, but the second must be on the allowed list for the primary paper, and both go in one application. Multiple applications are rejected without refund.
- The popular pairs are CS with DA, EC with EE, ME with XE and EE with RA. CS with EE is not an allowed pair, and MN cannot be paired with anything.
- For GG (Geology and Geophysics) and XH (Humanities and Social Sciences), you choose your part or section at the time of application. For XE and XL, you choose sections during the exam. In a multi-session paper you sit only the session assigned to you.
- You may choose a paper outside your own discipline, but the admitting institute decides whether to accept it.
The paper list, marks distribution and question types are covered in the GATE exam pattern. If you are picking between two papers, think about the GATE score and normalisation too, since each paper has its own qualifying mark.
Exam cities in Tamil Nadu
You choose six cities from the same zone. For the IIT Madras zone, the tentative GATE 2027 city list includes these Tamil Nadu cities: Chennai South, Chennai North, Coimbatore, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Erode, Kanchipuram, Kanyakumari-Nagercoil, Karaikudi, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Namakkal, Ooty, Pollachi, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Thanjavur, Theni, Thoothukudi, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore and Virudhunagar. There are no exam centres outside India, so foreign nationals and NRIs also sit in an Indian city. The allotment comes on 4 January 2027, and your admit card carries the final centre.
Common registration mistakes
- Filing two applications for two papers instead of one application with two papers. Duplicates are rejected without a refund.
- Leaving DigiLocker unverified, which triggers scrutiny and an original-ID check at the centre.
- Uploading the wrong category proof, or putting an OBC-NCL or EWS certificate on the portal when none is needed.
- Treating the late-fee window as a free extension. It costs ₹500 more per paper.
- Choosing a paper from last year's list. Check the 2027 paper codes first.

Frequently asked questions
What is the last date for GATE 2027 registration?
The regular deadline was 5 October 2026, and the late-fee window is scheduled to close on 12 October 2026. IIT Madras has already moved these dates more than once, so confirm on the official site.
Do I need DigiLocker for GATE 2027?
Yes, for Indian nationals. DigiLocker supplies your details and verified ID. You can proceed with an unverified account, but the application is scrutinised later and the original ID must be shown at the centre.
Can I register for two papers in GATE 2027?
Yes, if the second paper is on the allowed list for your primary paper. You apply for both in one application. The brochure sets the fee at twice the single-paper fee, so check the fee table if you are paying in the late-fee period.
Do I need to upload my mark sheets?
No. Class 10, Class 12 and degree mark sheets are not needed for GATE registration. SC/ST and PwD candidates upload their category documents to DigiLocker.
Can foreign nationals appear for GATE 2027?
Yes. They pay the full fee (the ₹2,000 category) and sit the exam in an Indian city, since there are no overseas centres in 2027.
