GATE answer key: how to check responses, challenge a key and calculate your marks
On this page
After the GATE exam, the organising institute lets you see your recorded responses in GOAPS, publishes provisional answer keys, and allows you to contest a key during a set window by paying a fee. The final result follows. For GATE 2027, organised by IIT Madras, the exam days are 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 and the result is on 19 March 2027, but the dates for responses, keys and challenges have not been announced. This page explains the process and shows how to turn a key into your raw marks.
What happens after the exam
- Your responses appear in GOAPS. You log in to the portal you registered on and see the answers recorded against each question.
- Provisional answer keys are published. The organising institute posts the keys for each paper on the official site.
- A challenge window opens. You can contest a key within set dates, on payment of a fee. The 2027 brochure does not state the fee amount, so wait for the notice.
- The result is declared. For GATE 2027 this is scheduled for 19 March 2027, with the scorecard following for qualified candidates as explained on the GATE result page.
Do not trust any date for steps 1 to 3 from a coaching website, because the official site announces them. Multi-session papers have one key per session, so use the file for your own session. In GATE 2026, for example, CS and CE had two sessions, published as CS1/CS2 and CE1/CE2.
How GATE marks are calculated
| Question type | Correct | Wrong |
|---|---|---|
| MCQ, 1 mark | +1 | -1/3 |
| MCQ, 2 marks | +2 | -2/3 |
| MSQ (1 or 2 marks) | Full marks only if you select all the correct options and nothing else | 0, with no negative marking and no partial credit |
| NAT (1 or 2 marks) | Full marks for the correct number | 0, with no negative marking |
Negative marking applies only to MCQs. A blind guess among four options has an expected gain of exactly zero (1/4 of a mark gained against 3/4 of a third lost), so guessing only helps when you can eliminate an option. MSQ and NAT carry no penalty, so a thoughtful attempt costs nothing in marks.
A worked example
These are invented numbers to show the arithmetic, for a 65-question paper worth 100 marks.
| Question type | Marks each | Attempted | Correct | Wrong | Marks earned |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MCQ | 1 | 26 | 20 | 6 | 20 - (6 × 1/3) = 18 |
| MCQ | 2 | 23 | 14 | 9 | 28 - (9 × 2/3) = 22 |
| MSQ | 2 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 8 |
| NAT | 2 | 4 | 3 | 1 | 6 |
| NAT | 1 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| Total | 61 | 56 |
Four questions were left blank, which makes 65. The raw mark is 56 out of 100. The 15 wrong MCQs cost 8 marks in all, and those wrong MSQ and NAT answers cost nothing beyond the marks not earned. If those 9 wrong 2-mark answers had been left blank instead, the score would have been 62. That is a reminder to attempt an MCQ when you have a real reason to pick an option.
From raw marks to your result
The number you compute is your raw mark. It is the final mark only for a single-session paper. If your paper ran in several sessions, GATE normalises marks across sessions before calculating the score, so your normalised marks can differ from the raw ones. The GATE score calculation page has the formulas. The qualifying mark then decides whether you get a scorecard at all, and the GATE cut-off page shows how it works with the official 2026 figures.
To judge your estimate, compare it with the qualifying marks published for your paper last year. In the official GATE 2026 figures, the General qualifying mark runs from the floor of 25 up to the cap of 40, depending on the paper. That comparison is only a rough guide, because each year's qualifying mark depends on how that year's candidates performed.
Checking a key: a method that works
- Download the key for your paper and session. Use the official file, not a coaching PDF.
- List your own responses in the order of the question numbers. If you didn't note them in the hall, use the response view in GOAPS.
- Mark each question right, wrong or blank, by type.
- For NAT, check how the official key states the accepted answer, because for numerical questions it may be a range, and your keyed value must fall within it.
- Calculate raw marks with the table above, then recalculate once assuming that you lose or gain the questions you plan to challenge.
Challenging a key
You pay a fee to contest a key, so challenge only the questions where you are confident. Before you do:
- Re-read the question statement for qualifiers such as "which of the following are true", since MSQ questions need every correct option.
- Check the units and the data given for numerical questions.
- Work out the answer from first principles and from a standard textbook, and keep the working to support your case.
- Check that you are looking at the key for your own session and paper code.
Write the challenge clearly and keep it short, and follow the instructions on the challenge page when it opens.
Using official keys for practice
The GATE 2027 downloads page has question papers from 2007 to 2026 and year-wise papers with answer keys for 2021 to 2026, by paper code. Examples are the GATE 2026 CS1 question paper key and the GATE 2026 master papers and keys at gate2026.iitg.ac.in. Marking past papers with the official key, using the scoring rules above, is the most honest practice you can do, and the guide to GATE previous year papers and mock tests explains how to sequence it. Since the syllabus was revised for 2027, use past papers for practice and not as a prediction of what will be asked.
Using PrepMatic to mark your practice
PrepMatic's mock results show your score with negative marking, a subject-wise breakdown and the subject that cost you the most marks, so you can build the habit of reviewing every test the way you will review the real key. Its questions are AI-generated practice, not official papers, so keep the official ones for calibration. The free GATE assessment (about 15 questions, no timer) shows your weakest subjects, and the plan is built from your exam date and daily hours. The GATE hub has the rest of the guides.
Frequently asked questions
When will the GATE 2027 answer key be released?
The date has not been announced. IIT Madras will publish it on gate2027.iitm.ac.in after the exam days of 6 to 21 February 2027, ahead of the result on 19 March 2027.
Is there negative marking in GATE?
Yes, for MCQs only: 1/3 mark off for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 mark off for a wrong 2-mark MCQ. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking.
How do I calculate my GATE marks from the key?
Add the marks for correct answers, subtract 1/3 or 2/3 for each wrong MCQ, and ignore wrong MSQ and NAT answers. If your paper has several sessions, those raw marks are normalised before the score is calculated.
Can I challenge the GATE answer key?
Yes, during the dates the organising institute sets, and on payment of a fee. The 2027 brochure does not state the fee amount.
Do MSQ questions give partial marks?
No. You get full marks only if you select all the correct options and no wrong ones.
