The GATE 2027 result is scheduled for 19 March 2027, as the official schedule from IIT Madras (the organising institute for 2027) stands today, and dates are liable to change. Only candidates who score at or above the qualifying mark for their category receive a scorecard and a GATE score. The score is valid for three years from the result date. After a set free-download window, a scorecard costs ₹500 per paper until 31 December 2027, and none are issued from 1 January 2028.

GATE 2027 spreads the exam over six days and three weekends, where 2026 used four days. Both result dates fall in the third week of March. The official site announces the exact scorecard window, so do not rely on a date from a third-party site. Answer keys and challenges come before the result and are covered on the GATE answer key page.

Who gets a scorecard

Your category's qualifying mark decides it. For the General category the qualifying mark is max(25, min(40, μ + σ)) out of 100, where μ is the mean and σ the standard deviation of all candidates who appeared in that paper. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates need 0.9 times the General mark, and SC, ST and PwD candidates need two-thirds of it. A candidate at or above the mark is "qualified" and gets a scorecard. Nobody else receives a GATE score. The GATE cut-off page works through the formula with the official 2026 figures.

What the score is

The GATE score is reported on a scale that runs up to 1000. A General candidate exactly at the qualifying mark scores 350, and one at the average of the top 0.1% of candidates (or the top 10 candidates, whichever group is larger) scores 900. If your paper ran in several sessions, marks are normalised before the score is calculated. Because the score depends on each paper's qualifying mark and top group, the same marks give different scores in different papers and years. The formula and a worked example are on the GATE score calculation page.

Downloading and keeping the scorecard

  • The scorecard is a free download for a window the organising institute announces.
  • After that window, a scorecard costs ₹500 per paper, up to 31 December 2027.
  • No scorecards are issued from 1 January 2028, and there are no hard copies.
  • The score is valid for 3 years from the result date, which for a 19 March 2027 result carries into March 2030.

Download your scorecard as soon as it is available, save the PDF in two places and keep your login details. If you took two papers, there is one scorecard for each paper you qualified in. For perspective on validity, COAP 2026 accepted GATE scores from 2026, 2025 and 2024, so a score is useful across more than one admission season.

How many candidates take GATE

In the official GATE 2026 cut-off table, the paper-wise counts add up to 10,11,719 registrations and 7,97,434 candidates who appeared. These are paper-wise numbers, so a candidate who took two papers is counted twice. By that table, about 79% of registrations turned up on the day. Do not read a pass rate off these numbers: we have not verified any published figure for how many candidates qualified.

After the result: the main routes

Qualifying in GATE does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job. It opens these routes, each with its own process. The GATE after-result guide covers them in detail.

M.Tech, MS and PhD admissions. A valid GATE score is used for Master's and direct-PhD admission in engineering, technology, architecture, science and humanities. Ministry of Education guidelines ask for at least 70% weightage to GATE in postgraduate admission, and the rest may be a test, interview or academic record. M.Tech assistance is ₹12,400 a month, generally for 22 months, and the direct-PhD fellowship is ₹37,000 a month for years 1 and 2 and ₹42,000 for years 3 to 5. The admitting institute manages the scholarship and decides how many students receive it.

COAP for IIT and IISc offers. The Common Offer Acceptance Portal is where you accept, retain or reject M.Tech offers. It is not an application portal: you apply to each institute separately, and institutes make the COAP registration number mandatory on their forms. COAP registration is free. The portal is run by the previous year's GATE organiser, and COAP 2026 was run by IIT Roorkee with 24 participating institutes and rounds from about May to July. We do not state who runs COAP 2027 until it is announced.

CCMT for NITs and IIITs. Centralised counselling for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutions runs on the CCMT portal. Its dates, fees and eligibility change each year, so read the portal.

PSU recruitment. PSUs set their own age limits, degree percentages and selection stages, even though GATE has no age limit. POWERGRID has already advertised Engineer Trainee posts through GATE 2027 (advertisement CC/03/2026, dated 24 September 2026): EE, CE, CS and EC candidates qualified in the matching paper, with an upper age limit of 28 as on 31 March 2027 and at least 60% in the degree. It will notify the selection process later. Do not assume other PSUs will follow; each issues its own notice.

A practical checklist for result day

  1. Download and save the scorecard and the result notice.
  2. Compare your marks with your category's qualifying mark for your paper.
  3. List the programmes or PSUs you will target and their own eligibility rules.
  4. Register for COAP or CCMT when they open, if you are applying for M.Tech.
  5. If you missed your target, remember that there is no limit on the number of attempts. The next cycle's registration details will come from its own brochure, and this cycle's process is on the GATE registration page.

Using PrepMatic through the cycle

If you intend to try again, start from where you lost marks. PrepMatic's free GATE assessment (about 15 questions, no timer) shows your weakest subjects, the study plan counts back from your exam date, and mocks give a score with negative marking and the subject that cost you the most marks. Predictions in the app are a preparation guide and not your GATE score. The GATE hub links every guide.
