NTA publishes a provisional NEET answer key, lets candidates see their recorded responses, opens a paid challenge window, and then issues the final key that the result is built on. Your score is simple: 4 marks for every correct answer, minus 1 for every wrong answer, with unanswered questions scoring zero. In 2026 there were two papers, because the 3 May exam was cancelled after a paper leak and the valid exam was the re-examination on 21 June 2026. That matters: the provisional key NTA notified on 6 May 2026 belongs to the cancelled exam, not to the re-exam.

The process in order

  1. Provisional answer key. NTA posts it on its official sites, with the question paper codes. The 2026 notice for the original exam was dated 6 May 2026.
  2. Recorded responses. Candidates see their recorded responses, such as the OMR image, by logging in. We have not confirmed the dates of this display for the 2026 re-exam.
  3. Challenge window. You can challenge a key during a set window by paying a fee. For 2025 a single source reports ₹200 per question, so confirm in the notice.
  4. Final key. NTA publishes it, and in 2025 the final key came with the result on 14 June 2025.
  5. Result. For the re-exam, the result was declared on 16 July 2026. See how NEET results work.

NTA announces dates for each of these steps in its notices, and none has been announced for 2027, because the 2027 bulletin is not out. The Education Minister has announced a computer-based exam from 2027, and NTA has not said whether responses and keys will be displayed differently. Wait for the bulletin.

Match the right paper and the right code

Before you check anything, be sure about two things.

  • The right exam. If you appeared in 2026, the valid exam was the one on 21 June. A key for the 3 May paper does not apply to it.
  • The right booklet code. NTA's key notices include the question paper codes. The 2025 papers used numeric test-booklet codes (45 to 48). Use the code printed on your own booklet and match it to the key for that code.

NTA also warned on 20 July 2026 about fake, altered or AI-generated NEET 2026 documents and fake OMR sheets on social media. Use only NTA's own pages, neet.nta.nic.in and nta.ac.in, to view your responses.

How to calculate your NEET score

Score = 4 × (correct answers) − 1 × (wrong answers). Blank questions add nothing. The paper has 180 questions (45 Physics, 45 Chemistry and 90 Biology) for 720 marks. The NEET exam pattern page explains the structure.

A worked example, with invented numbers:

SubjectQuestionsCorrectWrongBlankMarks
Physics45281254 × 28 − 12 = 100
Chemistry4534834 × 34 − 8 = 128
Biology90731074 × 73 − 10 = 282
Total1801353015510

Check: 4 × 135 = 540, minus 30 wrong answers gives 510. The 30 wrong answers cost 30 marks directly: had they been left blank, the score would have been 540. The only way to judge whether your guessing paid off is to count it, question by question, against the key.

A blind guess among four options earns 4 with probability 1/4 and loses 1 with probability 3/4, a small expected gain of 0.25 marks with a wide spread of outcomes. If you can remove one option, the expected gain rises to about 0.67 marks, and with two removed it is 1.5. The break-even point is a 1-in-5 chance of being right. Practise your decision rule in mocks so that it is a habit.

What to do with your calculated score

A score on its own does not tell you where you stand.

  • Qualifying cut-off. For the 2026 re-exam, the General (UR/EWS) qualifying cut-off was 213 marks, against 144 in 2025 and 162 in 2024. See the NEET cut-off page.
  • Rank. NTA's rank comes from the final result, not from your estimate. The NEET marks vs rank page explains why the mapping shifts every year, and how ties are broken: higher Biology marks first, then Chemistry, then Physics, then fewer wrong answers.
  • Seats. Qualifying is not admission. Government seats close at far higher scores, and counselling decides the rest.

Treat your own calculation as provisional. The final key can differ from the provisional one, and the result is what counts.

Challenging a key

A challenge costs money, so be selective. Support it with a source: the NMC syllabus is aligned with NCERT Class 11 and 12, so cite the NCERT page and line, not a coaching note. Check the question paper code, the language version (the English version prevails if the two differ) and your reading of the question. If you challenge, do it only within the window NTA announces, and keep the payment confirmation.

Using past keys for practice

Official answer keys are on NTA's sites. Whether NTA hosts a complete public archive of old NEET papers is not confirmed, so do not assume a coaching site's PDF is official. For how to use older papers by chapter, see NEET previous year question papers. When you practise with the old 200-question format, remember that the current paper has 180 compulsory questions in 3 hours.

Checking your answers with PrepMatic

After your real score, the next question is why you lost marks. PrepMatic's mock results show your score with NEET's negative marking, the subject-wise breakdown and the subject that cost you the most marks, and the free assessment (about 15 questions, no timer) shows your weakest subjects. Practice questions are AI-generated, so use official papers and keys for calibration. If you take your exam in Tamil, you can choose Tamil as your exam language for mocks. The NEET hub links the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is there negative marking in NEET?

Yes. Each wrong answer deducts 1 mark and each correct answer earns 4. Unanswered questions score zero.

How do I calculate my NEET score from the answer key?

Multiply your correct answers by 4 and subtract the number of wrong answers. For example, 135 correct and 30 wrong gives 540 − 30 = 510.

Can I challenge the NEET answer key?

Yes. NTA opens a paid challenge window after the provisional key. A single source reports ₹200 per question for 2025, so check the current notice for the fee.

Is the final key different from the provisional key?

It can be. Challenges are reviewed, and the final key is the one used for the result. In 2025 it was published with the result on 14 June.

Which key applies to NEET 2026?

The re-exam of 21 June 2026. The provisional key notified on 6 May 2026 was for the cancelled 3 May exam.
