National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (UG)

The NEET-UG guide: from the syllabus to a government medical seat

By the PrepMatic team · Updated · 28 guides

NEET-UG is the national entrance test, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), for admission to MBBS, BDS and other undergraduate medical courses in India. The paper has 180 compulsory multiple-choice questions (45 Physics, 45 Chemistry and 90 Biology) for 720 marks in 3 hours, with 4 marks for each correct answer and 1 mark deducted for each wrong one. Your score then decides which seats you can compete for in counselling, run by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota seats and by each state for its own seats.

The 2026 cycle was unusual. The NEET 2026 exam of 3 May was cancelled after a paper leak, and the valid exam was the re-examination of 21 June 2026, with results on 16 July. For NEET 2027, the Union Education Minister has announced a move to computer-based testing with the 720-mark format unchanged, but NTA has not yet published a bulletin. This guide is written for 2027 aspirants and uses 2026 as the latest completed cycle.

To prepare, you master the NMC syllabus, which is built on the NCERT Class 11 and 12 books, practise under exam conditions and learn from every test. Biology is half the paper, so it carries the most marks. Start with the exam pattern and the syllabus, pick the plan that fits your stage below, and use the guides on each subject, on mocks and on counselling as you reach them.

If you are using an older book, video or PDF, check it against this table. The 200-question, 200-minute format with optional Section B ran from 2021 to 2024, and the syllabus moved to the NMC list from 2024. The exam pattern page covers the changes.

Where to start, depending on your stage

If you are in Class 11 or just starting. You have the most time and the most to gain from habits. Read the NEET preparation from Class 11 plan, learn how to read NCERT for NEET, and keep school and NEET aligned.

If you are in Class 12. You carry boards and NEET together, plus a Class 11 backlog. The one-year NEET study plan is built for exactly this. Pair it with the revision strategy for the final months.

If you are repeating. Start by finding out what cost you marks last time. NEET dropper strategy explains how to diagnose an attempt and plan around it.

If you are studying without coaching. NEET preparation without coaching lays out a self-study system for resources, schedule, doubts and accountability.

If you want to write NEET in Tamil. The NEET preparation in Tamil guide covers the language option and how to bridge Tamil Nadu state-board books and NCERT.

If you want subject help. Use Physics, Chemistry and Biology preparation, with deeper guides on organic chemistry and genetics and evolution. The high-weightage chapters page shows where questions concentrate.

If the exam is close. Work on time management in the exam, mock tests and previous year question papers.

How the whole journey fits together

NEET is the first step in a longer chain. Knowing the chain early stops you being surprised by it later.

The 2026 cycle shows the rhythm. Applications opened on 8 February, the original 3 May exam was cancelled, and NTA held the re-exam on 21 June and declared the result on 16 July. Tamil Nadu opened applications on 29 June and began its rounds in August. These are history, not predictions: each year's dates come from NTA, MCC and the state's own notices.

Qualifying is not the same as getting a seat

The qualifying cut-off for the 2026 re-exam was 213 marks for General candidates and 177 for SC, ST and OBC. That only opens the door to counselling. Government seats close at much higher ranks, and no single score is enough everywhere. The honest way to set a target is to read the official allotment lists for your category and quota, and that method is in the government medical college score guide.

Using PrepMatic alongside this guide

PrepMatic is an AI study partner built in Chennai. Its free assessment of about 15 untimed questions shows your weakest subjects and a projected score out of 720, and the study plan turns your exam date, daily study hours and study days into a Today view and a Roadmap. Full-length NEET mocks follow the real paper with the +4 and −1 marking, and shorter custom mocks can focus on your weak subjects. You can choose Tamil as your exam language. The Basic plan is free for one exam.

Frequently asked questions

When is NEET 2027?

NTA has not published the NEET 2027 dates or bulletin yet. The Education Minister has announced that the exam will be computer-based from 2027. Watch neet.nta.nic.in and nta.ac.in for the notification, and prepare for the 180-question, 720-mark format in the meantime.

What is the NEET exam pattern?

180 compulsory multiple-choice questions, 45 each in Physics and Chemistry and 90 in Biology, for 720 marks in 3 hours. A correct answer gives 4 marks and a wrong answer takes away 1.

How many marks are needed to qualify for NEET?

Qualification is by percentile: the 50th for General and EWS and the 40th for SC, ST and OBC. In the valid 2026 exam these were 213 and 177 marks out of 720. They change every year.

Can I write NEET in Tamil?

Yes. Tamil is one of 13 languages, offered at centres in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. You receive a Tamil and English bilingual booklet, and the English version is final if the two differ.

Do I need coaching to crack NEET?

NEET does not require coaching. It requires complete, NCERT-based coverage of the syllabus, regular practice under timed conditions, and honest analysis of your mistakes. How to build that system alone is in the no-coaching guide.
