Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering
GATE exam 2027: dates, pattern, eligibility and how to prepare
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a national computer-based exam that tests undergraduate-level engineering and science subjects. A valid GATE score is used for M.Tech, MS and direct-PhD admissions and by many public-sector companies (PSUs) for recruitment. GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras and held on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, with results on 19 March 2027.
If you have not registered yet, the timing is tight. The regular registration window closed on 5 October 2026, and the late-fee window closes on 12 October 2026, according to the official important-dates page. The eligibility guide has the fees, documents and key dates.
To prepare, pick your paper, read its revised 2027 syllabus, practise General Aptitude and mathematics every day, learn your subjects one at a time, solve previous year papers, and then sit timed full-length mocks. Each of those steps has its own page in this guide.

What is new in GATE 2027
- New paper. Robotics & Automation (RA) is added. Textile Engineering & Fibre Science is no longer a paper; it is section XE9 inside Engineering Sciences, so the total stays at 30.
- Syllabi revised. Every paper's syllabus was revised for 2027, the first revision since 2021. Do not plan from a 2021 to 2026 topic list.
- Numeric section codes. XE, XH and XL sections now use numbers: XE-A became XE0, XH-C1 became XH1, XL-P became XL0.
- Six exam days over three weekends, against four days in 2026.
- DigiLocker and live photo at registration. There are no exam centres outside India.
- Qualifying mark capped at 40. The General qualifying mark is max(25, min(40, μ + σ)). Older articles leave out the cap, which was already in effect in 2026.
Details are in the exam pattern and score calculation pages.

PrepMatic can give your plan a starting point. Its free GATE assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows your weakest subjects. You then set your exam date, daily hours and study days to get a day-by-day plan, a month-by-week roadmap, and mocks focused on your weak subjects. Practice questions are AI-generated, so use the official papers for the real question style.
How GATE, your score and your next step fit together
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Sep to Oct 2026 | Registration for GATE 2027 (opened 2 September), with a correction window from 14 to 21 October. City allotment follows on 4 January 2027 |
| 6 to 21 February 2027 | The exam. Papers with several sessions are normalised |
| 19 March 2027 | Results. Candidates at or above their category's qualifying mark get a scorecard |
| After the result | The score is valid for 3 years. PSUs and institutes run their own selection |
The score is only the first filter. M.Tech offers at IITs and IISc go through the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP), which is for accepting, retaining or rejecting offers, not for applying; you apply to each institute separately. NITs and other centrally funded institutes use centralised CCMT counselling. PSU recruitment is announced by each company, and the process can include a group discussion or interview. For example, POWERGRID advertised Engineer Trainee posts through GATE 2027 on 24 September 2026, with an age limit of 28 even though GATE itself has none. Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job. The PSU and M.Tech guide explains each route.
