GATE CE (Civil Engineering) for 2027 has eight syllabus sections: Engineering Mathematics (13 marks) and seven civil subjects that carry 72 marks together, plus 15 marks of General Aptitude. The civil sections are Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, and Construction Materials and Management. IIT Madras revised every GATE syllabus for 2027, the first revision since 2021. Start with Structural Engineering, which is the longest section and builds the mechanics you need elsewhere.
How GATE CE marks are divided
| Part | Marks |
|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 |
| Engineering Mathematics | 13 |
| Civil subjects (sections 2 to 8) | 72 |
| Total | 100 (65 questions, 3 hours) |
MCQ, MSQ and NAT questions and the negative-marking rules are common to all papers; see the GATE exam pattern. For scale, 97,486 candidates registered for CE in GATE 2026 and 76,385 appeared. CE ran in two sessions that year (CE1 and CE2), so its scores were normalised, a process explained in GATE score and normalisation. The General-category qualifying mark was 28.7 (official IIT Guwahati table). That is an illustration only, because each year's mark is computed after the exam.

We have not compared this list with earlier syllabi topic by topic, so do not assume which topics are new. Construction Materials and Management is listed as its own section in the 2027 syllabus. Use the official CE syllabus PDF as your checklist, since the topic lists above are shortened.
What deserves the most time
GATE publishes no topic weightage, and the revision makes older patterns less reliable. In recent papers, Structural Engineering (including concrete and steel design) has been the largest block, followed by Water Resources, Geotechnical, Environmental and Transportation, with Geomatics and Construction Materials and Management smaller. This is an unofficial reading of past papers, not a rule.
The syllabus structure suggests three practical points:
- Structural Engineering is several subjects in one. Engineering mechanics, solid mechanics, structural analysis, concrete and steel each have their own topic list. Treat them as five mini-subjects in your plan.
- Code-based design needs method plus code. The syllabus asks for limit state design, design and detailing and design using IRC codes. Learn the design method with the relevant Indian Standard or IRC code your textbook uses, such as IS 456 for concrete and IS 800 for steel, and practise the numericals.
- Smaller sections are quick marks. Geomatics, Environmental and Construction Materials and Management are lighter on derivations than the structural subjects. Finishing them early frees the last months for the longer subjects.
The 13-mark maths block, including numerical methods, is in the Engineering Mathematics guide.
The order to study
- Engineering mechanics, solid mechanics, then structural analysis. They are the mechanics base for structures and also help in geotechnical and fluid topics.
- Concrete and steel structures. Do them straight after analysis, while bending, shear and deflection are fresh.
- Geotechnical Engineering. Uses stress, strain and Mohr's circle from solid mechanics.
- Water Resources Engineering. Fluid mechanics, then hydraulics, hydrology and irrigation.
- Environmental Engineering and Transportation Engineering. More descriptive; each rewards the standard design formulas.
- Geomatics, then Construction Materials and Management.
- Engineering Mathematics, in short blocks along the way.

A 23-week first pass, then practice
An illustration for about 30 weeks in total. Scale it to the time you have, and see the GATE preparation strategy for general plans.
| Weeks | Block |
|---|---|
| 1-2 | Engineering Mathematics |
| 3-7 | Engineering mechanics, solid mechanics and structural analysis |
| 8-10 | Concrete and steel structures |
| 11-13 | Geotechnical Engineering |
| 14-17 | Water Resources Engineering (fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, irrigation, one week each) |
| 18-19 | Environmental Engineering |
| 20-21 | Transportation Engineering |
| 22 | Geomatics Engineering |
| 23 | Construction Materials and Management |
| 24-30 | Topic-wise past-paper sets, then full-length mocks on the virtual calculator |
Keep 15 minutes a day for General Aptitude. The previous year papers guide explains where the official papers are. Use the on-screen scientific calculator from your first mock, since a physical calculator is not allowed in the hall.
Pairing CE with a second paper, and where CE is used
CE can be paired with AE, AG, AR, ES, GE, NM or XE. CE and ME cannot be combined, and CE and CS are not an allowed pair either. Both papers go in one application. Check the GATE eligibility page for the other rules on applying.
In GATE 2026, CE was named by EIL, NHAI, NHIDCL, NPCIL and POWERGRID in their recruitment announcements on the official site. POWERGRID's Engineer Trainee 2027 advert, issued on 24 September 2026, lists Civil, with an upper age limit of 28 as on 31 March 2027 and a minimum of 60% in the degree. PSUs set their own age limits and minimum marks even though GATE has none, and they change every cycle. The after GATE guide explains the PSU and M.Tech routes, and the full exam is in the GATE hub.
Practising GATE CE with PrepMatic
PrepMatic's free GATE assessment is about 15 multiple-choice questions, untimed, and shows your weakest and strongest subjects with a projected score out of the paper's maximum. With seven civil sections plus maths, that subject-level view tells you where the early weeks should go. You get a study plan built from your exam date, daily hours and study days, plus topic tests and custom mocks focused on your weak subjects. The questions are AI-generated, not official papers, so use the official GATE papers for your final mocks and for NAT and MSQ practice.
Frequently asked questions
How many sections are there in the GATE CE 2027 syllabus?
Eight: Engineering Mathematics, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Geomatics Engineering, and Construction Materials and Management.
Which subjects matter most in GATE CE?
GATE publishes no weightage. In recent papers, Structural Engineering has been the largest block, but every section has to be covered, and the 2027 revision makes past patterns less reliable.
Is the GATE CE syllabus different in 2027?
Yes. All GATE syllabi were revised for 2027, the first revision since 2021. The eight sections above are the 2027 CE version, with Construction Materials and Management as its own section. What changed from 2026 has not been checked here, so compare the CE PDF with your notes.
Can I take GATE CE with another paper?
Yes, with AE, AG, AR, ES, GE, NM or XE. Other pairs, including CE with ME or CS, are not allowed, and both papers must be in a single application.
Which PSUs hire civil engineers through GATE?
For the GATE 2026 cycle, EIL, NHAI, NHIDCL, NPCIL and POWERGRID announced hiring that included CE. For GATE 2027, POWERGRID has advertised so far. Other organisations publish their own notices each year, so check them.
