GATE previous year papers and mock tests: where to get them and how to use them
On this page
GATE previous year papers from 2007 to 2026 are free on the downloads page of the GATE 2027 website (gate2027.iitm.ac.in), and year-wise papers with answer keys are there for 2021 to 2026, one file per paper code. Use them in three passes: topic by topic as you finish each subject, then section by section, then full-length in 3 hours with the on-screen calculator. Because every syllabus was revised for 2027, check each old question against your paper's 2027 syllabus before you count it as practice.
Where to get official papers and keys
| What you get | Where | Years |
|---|---|---|
| Bulk download of question papers | A Google Drive folder linked from the GATE 2027 downloads page | 2007 to 2026 |
| Year-wise question papers with answer keys, by paper code | The same downloads page | 2021 to 2026 |
| Master question papers and answer keys for 2026 | The GATE 2026 website run by IIT Guwahati | 2026 |
Files are named by paper code. Papers that ran in several sessions have one file per session, for example CS1 and CS2 in 2026. For example, the 2026 CS session 1 paper is CS1.pdf and its answer key is CS1_Keys.pdf. Other papers follow the same naming, with their own paper code.
The official files are question papers and keys. For worked solutions, use your textbooks, a teacher or a solutions source you trust, and cross-check any solution against the official key. The GATE 2026 site also carried links to mock tests; look for the 2027 equivalents on the official site once they are published. They are the best place to see the real exam interface and the virtual calculator.
GATE's official FAQ gives only two pieces of preparation advice: study the official syllabus and solve the previous papers. It does not recommend books, coaching or test series.
What the 2027 syllabus revision changes
GATE 2027 has revised syllabi for all papers, the first revision since 2021, plus some changes to the paper list. This affects how you use old papers.
- Filter every question. Open your paper's 2027 syllabus PDF and tick each topic. If an old question is outside the new syllabus, solve it only as a concept exercise. Do not assume which topics were added or dropped; compare against the PDF.
- Treat topic frequency with caution. Counts of "how many times X was asked" from 2021 to 2026 papers are unofficial and may not carry over to a revised syllabus.
- Robotics & Automation (RA) is new. There are no past RA papers. Practise the matching sections from the older papers of your closest branches (for example, control from EE or IN, and mechanics from ME), and use the RA syllabus as your checklist.
- Textile (TF) is now XE9. Old TF papers remain useful for content, but check them against the XE9 section of the 2027 syllabus.
- Data Science & AI (DA) is recent. The DA paper was introduced in 2024, so only 2024, 2025 and 2026 papers exist.
Older papers in the bulk folder are best used for topic practice. The paper structure and question mix have changed over the years, so use the most recent papers for full-length simulations. See the GATE exam pattern for today's format.
A three-pass method
| Pass | When | How | Aim |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Topic-wise | Right after you finish a subject | Pull out that subject's questions from about the last 10 papers. Solve untimed, then check the key | Learn how GATE tests the topic |
| 2. Sectional | After the first pass of most subjects | Solve a full section against the clock, for example all General Aptitude and engineering mathematics questions in a paper | Build speed and accuracy |
| 3. Full-length | The last two to three months | One whole paper in 3 hours at 9:30 AM or 2:30 PM, with only the virtual calculator and a scribble pad | Train stamina and attempt strategy |
Keep the two most recent papers for the final weeks, since they best reflect the current style. For each question you miss or guess, write a line in your error log (topic, why you got it wrong, the fix) and re-solve it two weeks later. If you cannot re-solve it, it goes back on the list.
Practise with the virtual calculator
Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator is allowed in the hall. Physical calculators, phones and watches lead to disqualification. Find out in an official mock which operations it supports, and do your NAT calculations on it throughout practice, because pressing buttons on screen is slower than on a handheld calculator. Also build a habit of simple mental arithmetic and approximation, which is quicker than any calculator for easy numbers.
How to analyse a paper or a mock
Spend about as long on analysis as on the test. For every attempt, record the following.
| Metric | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Total marks and marks by section (General Aptitude, maths, subject) | Shows which block is dragging you down |
| Attempts and accuracy by question type | MCQ, MSQ and NAT behave differently |
| Marks lost to negative marking | Only MCQs lose marks when wrong |
| Time spent per section | Shows where the clock went |
| Cause of each error: concept, calculation, misread, or guess | Each cause has a different fix |
A worked example of the negative-marking audit: suppose you answered 6 one-mark MCQs and 5 two-mark MCQs wrongly. The penalty is 6 × 1/3 + 5 × 2/3 = 2 + 3.33 = 5.33 marks. If four of those eleven were pure guesses, you gave away between 1.33 marks (all four were 1-markers) and 2.67 marks (all four were 2-markers) for nothing, a price you could have avoided by leaving them blank. MSQ and NAT answers carry no penalty, so any wrong answers there cost you only the marks you did not earn.
Then compare your marks with a realistic target. The General qualifying mark in any paper lies between 25 and 40, and in GATE 2026 it was 30.0 for CS and 26.4 for EC; these are illustrations, not predictions for 2027. GATE score calculation explains how qualifying marks and the GATE score work.
How many mocks, and from where
Quality matters more than quantity. A sensible target is 8 to 12 full-length tests in the final months, each fully analysed, rather than 30 skimmed ones. Use official mocks and past papers first, then add a test series from a source you trust. Whatever the source, check it for the 65-question, 100-mark format, the right mix of MCQ, MSQ and NAT, and a syllabus consistent with 2027. The timing and weekly rhythm are in how to prepare for GATE.
Using PrepMatic alongside the official papers
PrepMatic's practice questions are AI-generated, so it is not a previous-year question bank, and the official papers above remain your source for the real thing. What PrepMatic adds is volume and feedback. You can run full-length mocks or shorter custom ones where you choose subjects, number of questions, duration and difficulty. Mocks can be focused on your weak subjects from the free assessment (about 15 untimed questions). Each result shows the subject-wise breakdown and the subject that cost you the most marks, and analytics track accuracy over time and speed per question. The GATE exam guide shows how this fits with the rest of your preparation.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I download GATE previous year question papers?
From the downloads page of the official GATE 2027 website. It has a bulk download of papers from 2007 to 2026, and year-wise papers with answer keys for 2021 to 2026. The GATE 2026 site also hosts the 2026 master papers and keys.
Are GATE answer keys available?
Yes. The downloads page has answer keys for 2021 to 2026, one per paper code and, for multi-session papers, per session. These are keys, not worked solutions.
How many years of GATE papers should I solve?
Solve about the last 10 years topic by topic, after checking each question against your 2027 syllabus, and keep the latest two for full-length practice. For DA, only 2024 to 2026 exist, and for RA there are none.
Are old GATE papers still useful after the syllabus revision?
Mostly yes, because core concepts are unchanged, but you must filter. Compare each topic with your paper's 2027 syllabus PDF and treat questions outside it as optional practice.
Can I use my own calculator in GATE mock tests?
In the real exam you can use only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator. Practise with it in mock tests so that the speed and keypad are familiar on the day.
