A valid GATE score opens three routes: recruitment by public sector undertakings (PSUs) and some government bodies, admission to M.Tech or MS programmes (through COAP for IITs and IISc, CCMT for NITs and IIITs, or an institute's own process), and PhD admission with a fellowship. Qualifying in GATE does not guarantee a seat, a stipend or a job; each route has its own conditions. For the GATE 2027 cycle, results are due on 19 March 2027 (dates may change), and PSU recruitment has already begun: POWERGRID advertised Engineer Trainee 2027 through GATE 2027 on 24 September 2026.

What a GATE score is, and what it is not

Only candidates who score at or above their category's qualifying mark get a scorecard and a GATE score. The score is valid for 3 years from the result date, and there is no limit on attempts or age, so a score that falls short this year can be improved next year. The scorecard is free to download for a set window. After that it costs ₹500 per paper up to 31 December 2027, and no scorecards are issued from 1 January 2028. How the score is calculated, and what counts as a good one, is in GATE score and normalisation.

PSU recruitment through GATE

PSUs advertise posts such as Engineer Trainee and shortlist candidates using the GATE score in a paper related to the post. Many then add a group discussion or interview. GATE itself has no age limit, but PSUs set one. They also set a minimum percentage in the degree. These conditions differ by organisation and change every cycle, so the advertisement is the only reliable source.

The timing surprises people. POWERGRID's advertisement for GATE 2026 was dated 27 September 2025, and its advertisement for GATE 2027 was dated 24 September 2026, months before the exam in February 2027. Watch for adverts during registration season, not only after the result.

This is a record of last cycle, not a promise for 2027. Each organisation decides every year whether to hire through GATE and in which papers.

POWERGRID Engineer Trainee 2027

POWERGRID's advertisement CC/03/2026, dated 24 September 2026, is the one PSU advertisement for GATE 2027 confirmed at the time of writing.

  • Posts and papers: Engineer Trainee in Electrical, Civil, Computer Science and Electronics, each requiring the matching GATE 2027 paper (EE, CE, CS or EC).
  • Age limit: 28 years as on 31 March 2027.
  • Qualification: minimum 60% in the degree. Final-year students may apply if their results are out by 31 August 2027.
  • Pay (as stated in the advertisement): basic ₹40,000 in the IDA scale ₹40,000 to ₹1,40,000 during training. The approximate CTC is ₹11.00 lakh during training and ₹22.50 lakh after absorption at E2 (₹50,000 to ₹1,60,000).
  • Selection: the process will be notified later.

Branch guides: Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, ECE, CS and Data Science and AI.

Other organisations that use GATE scores

The GATE 2027 information brochure lists these as users of GATE scores in recent years: AAI, BHEL, BSNL, CIL, CRIS, CVPPL, DVC, ECIL, EIL, GAIL, Grid-India, IOCL, MDSL, NALCO, NCRTC, NHAI, NMDC, NLCIL, HVPNL, NEEPCO, NPCIL, NTPC, OPTCL, ONGC, POWERGRID, PSPCL, RINL and SAIL. That list does not mean any of them recruit through GATE this year. Check each one's careers page. The brochure also says the Cabinet Secretariat recruits Group-A posts on GATE score: Senior Field Officer (Tele), Senior Research Officer (Crypto) and Senior Research Officer (S&T).

M.Tech and MS admission: COAP

COAP is the Common Offer Acceptance Portal, running since 2017. It is where you accept, retain or reject M.Tech offers; it is not an application portal.

  • You apply to each institute separately, on its own form, and the COAP registration number is mandatory on those forms.
  • COAP registration is free.
  • COAP 2026 was run by IIT Roorkee, with 24 institutes: IISc Bengaluru and 23 IITs, including IIT Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Roorkee.
  • Eligibility in 2026: Indian nationals with a GATE 2026, 2025 or 2024 score.
  • Rounds ran from about May to July, and the last round (round 10) was extended to 13 July 2026.

Watch the GATE website after the results for the current COAP link and schedule. Each institute sets its own cut-offs, written tests and interviews. The official guideline is that GATE gets at least 70% weightage in postgraduate admission, with the rest from a test, interview or academic record. Some colleges also use GATE scores for admission without a government scholarship.

M.Tech admission: CCMT for NITs, IIITs and others

CCMT is the centralised, GATE-score-based counselling for M.Tech, M.Arch and M.Plan seats at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions. A rotating NIT runs it each year. The portal is ccmt.admissions.nic.in. In general you register, fill in and lock your choices, receive seat-allotment rounds and then accept and report. Dates, fees, accepted score years and minimum degree marks change every year, so read the current brochure on the portal. We do not state them here.

Stipend and PhD fellowship

For M.Tech, the assistance is ₹12,400 a month, generally for 22 months, under guidelines the GATE 2027 website cites (the AICTE PG scholarship for GATE and GPAT). You must first secure admission, the admitting institute manages it and the institute decides how many students receive it. For direct PhD after a B.E., B.Tech or M.Sc. with a valid GATE score, the fellowship is ₹37,000 a month for years 1 and 2 and ₹42,000 for years 3 to 5, per a Ministry of Finance circular cited by the GATE 2027 website.

Between the result and admission: a checklist

  1. Download your scorecard during the free window, so you avoid the ₹500-per-paper fee later.
  2. List programmes that accept your paper. Admitting institutes decide which GATE papers they take, including for a paper outside your own discipline.
  3. Register on COAP (free) when it opens, and apply separately to each institute. Keep the COAP number ready for the forms.
  4. Track CCMT if you want NITs or IIITs, and watch each PSU's careers page.
  5. Keep your documents ready: degree marks, category certificate if applicable, ID and photographs. PSUs add their own age and percentage rules.
  6. Plan for the next attempt. If the result falls short of your target, you may retake GATE, and an earlier score stays valid for 3 years. COAP 2026, for example, accepted scores from GATE 2026, 2025 and 2024. See GATE preparation strategy.

The score itself comes first. The GATE hub links to the exam pattern, eligibility rules and branch guides.

Preparing for the score with PrepMatic

PrepMatic does not handle admissions or PSU applications. It helps with the part that decides them, the score. The free GATE assessment is about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions and shows your weakest subjects and a projected score out of the paper's maximum. Then you can follow a study plan built from your exam date and daily hours, and take topic tests and mocks focused on your weak subjects. The questions are AI-generated, not official papers, so use the official GATE papers for your final mocks.

Frequently asked questions

Which PSUs recruit through GATE?

Several have, including EIL, NHAI, GAIL, NPCIL, OPTCL, NHIDCL and POWERGRID for GATE 2026. For GATE 2027, POWERGRID is the first with a confirmed advertisement. Each organisation decides yearly whether and how to use GATE, so read its notice.

Is there an age limit for PSU recruitment through GATE?

GATE has no age limit, but PSUs set their own. POWERGRID's Engineer Trainee 2027 advertisement fixes 28 years as on 31 March 2027, with a minimum of 60% in the degree. Check relaxations in each advertisement.

How much stipend does an M.Tech student get after GATE?

Assistance of ₹12,400 a month, generally for 22 months, is available to M.Tech students who secure admission and are selected for it by the admitting institute. Admission itself is not guaranteed by qualifying GATE.

No. COAP is for accepting, retaining or rejecting offers. You apply to each institute separately, and institutes require your COAP registration number on their forms.

What is CCMT?

CCMT is the centralised counselling for M.Tech, M.Arch and M.Plan admission at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutions using GATE scores. Check ccmt.admissions.nic.in for the current schedule and rules.

How long is a GATE score valid?

Three years from the result date. COAP 2026 accepted GATE 2026, 2025 and 2024 scores from Indian nationals.
