The GATE ME (Mechanical Engineering) 2027 syllabus has four sections: Engineering Mathematics (13 marks), Applied Mechanics and Design, Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences, and Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering. The three engineering sections together carry 72 marks, and General Aptitude adds 15. IIT Madras revised every GATE syllabus for 2027, the first revision since 2021. Four sections look short, but each hides many topic areas, so ME rewards a block-by-block plan.
How GATE ME marks are divided
| Part | Marks |
|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 |
| Engineering Mathematics | 13 |
| Applied Mechanics and Design; Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences; Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering | 72 together |
| Total | 100 (65 questions, 3 hours) |
The common rules on MCQ, MSQ and NAT questions and negative marking are in the GATE exam pattern. For scale, 76,823 candidates registered for ME in GATE 2026, 59,612 appeared and the General-category qualifying mark was 25.2, just above the floor of 25 (official IIT Guwahati table). That is an illustration only, because each year's mark is computed after the exam.

We have not compared this list with earlier syllabi topic by topic, so do not assume which topics are new. The 2027 text includes control-system topics under Vibrations, one-dimensional compressible flow, basics of combustion, additive manufacturing, PLCs and actuators, and six sigma and lean manufacturing. If your notes predate 2027, confirm each is covered. The official ME syllabus PDF should be your checklist.
What deserves the most time
There is no official weightage, and the revision makes older patterns less reliable. In recent papers, the thermal and fluids subjects (thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and the applications) have together been the largest block, followed by mechanics of materials, theory of machines and manufacturing, with machine design and engineering materials smaller. Treat this as an unofficial reading of past papers, not a rule.
The syllabus structure suggests three practical points:
- Industrial engineering is broad but formula-light. Production planning, operations research and quality topics are quick to learn compared with the mechanics subjects, which makes them good value if you protect time for them.
- Many ME questions are numerical. Keep a one-page sheet per subject with the key relations, units and sign conventions, and practise reading property charts, tables and the psychrometric chart, which the syllabus lists.
- The maths block is 13 marks, including numerical methods and Laplace transforms. See the Engineering Mathematics guide for the shared topics.
The order to study
- Engineering mechanics, then mechanics of materials. Both feed machine design and vibrations.
- Theory of machines, vibrations and machine design.
- Thermodynamics, then heat transfer. Thermodynamics first, because power cycles, IC engines and refrigeration depend on it.
- Fluid mechanics, then turbomachinery.
- Materials, casting, forming, joining and machining. Mostly descriptive with some formulas.
- Metrology, additive manufacturing, CAM and automation.
- Production planning and control, then operations research. These reward quick recall more than long derivations, so they fit well in the second half of the first pass.
- Engineering Mathematics, in short blocks through the first pass.

A 19-week first pass, then mocks
An illustration; scale it to the time you have. The GATE preparation strategy has general plans.
| Weeks | Block | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| 1-6 | Mechanics and design | Engineering mechanics (1), mechanics of materials (2), theory of machines (1), vibrations (1), machine design (1) |
| 7-13 | Thermal and fluids | Thermodynamics (2), heat transfer (2), fluid mechanics (2), applications and turbomachinery (1) |
| 14-17 | Production and industrial | Materials, casting, forming and joining (1), machining, metrology, additive manufacturing and CAM (2), production planning and operations research (1) |
| 18-19 | Engineering Mathematics | Linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, probability, numerical methods |
| 20-26 | Practice | Topic-wise past-paper sets, then full-length mocks on the virtual calculator |
If you prefer, spread the maths at an hour a day through weeks 1 to 17 instead of doing it at the end. Keep 15 minutes a day for General Aptitude. The previous year papers guide explains where the official papers are. Practise numericals on the on-screen scientific calculator, which is the only calculator allowed in the exam.
Pairing ME with a second paper, and where ME is used
ME can be paired with AE, CS, DA, IN, NM, PI, RA or XE. ME plus XE is a popular pair: XE is Engineering Sciences, where you take XE0 (Engineering Mathematics, 15 marks) plus two of XE1 to XE9, and the XE section list includes Fluid Mechanics, Materials Science, Solid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, which overlap with ME. Check the XE syllabus before you rely on that overlap. ME and CE cannot be combined. Both papers go in one application.
In GATE 2026, ME was named by EIL, GAIL and NPCIL in their recruitment announcements on the official site. The GATE 2027 brochure lists BHEL, IOCL, NTPC and ONGC among the organisations that used GATE scores in recent years, but that is not proof that any of them recruit this year, so check each one's notices. PSUs set their own age limits and minimum degree marks, and these change every cycle. The after GATE guide explains the process, and the whole exam is in the GATE hub.
Practising GATE ME with PrepMatic
PrepMatic's free GATE assessment takes about 15 multiple-choice questions with no timer, and shows your weakest and strongest subjects with a projected score out of the paper's maximum. Since the ME syllabus is wide, that subject-level view helps you decide where the first weeks go. You get a study plan built from your exam date, daily hours and study days, plus topic tests and custom mocks focused on your weak subjects. The questions are AI-generated, not official papers, so use the official GATE papers for your final mocks and for NAT and MSQ practice.
Frequently asked questions
How many sections are there in the GATE ME 2027 syllabus?
Four: Engineering Mathematics; Applied Mechanics and Design; Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences; and Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering. Each contains several topic areas, listed in the table above.
Which subjects matter most in GATE ME?
GATE publishes no weightage. In recent papers, the thermal and fluids subjects have been the largest block, but every section has to be covered, and the 2027 revision makes past patterns less reliable.
Is the GATE ME syllabus different in 2027?
Yes. Every GATE syllabus was revised for 2027, the first revision since 2021. The four sections above, and the topic areas in the table, are the 2027 ME text. We have not verified which topics differ from 2026, so check your notes against the PDF.
Which second paper is best with ME?
Any pair on the allowed list is valid: AE, CS, DA, IN, NM, PI, RA or XE. XE is popular because some of its sections overlap ME subjects. The best choice depends on the M.Tech or PSU you are aiming for.
Can I take GATE ME and CE together?
No. CE is not on ME's allowed list and ME is not on CE's, so that pair is not allowed.
