The RBI Assistant exam has a prelims, a mains and a Language Proficiency Test (LPT), with no interview. The mains has five tests of 40 questions and 40 marks each: Reasoning, English, Numerical Ability, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge. That makes 200 questions and 200 marks in 135 minutes, with a penalty of one-fourth of the marks for every wrong answer. RBI recruits office by office, so you compete for vacancies at the RBI office you choose; the Chennai office covers Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

RBI names its recruitment cycles by Panel Year. The Panel Year 2025 exam ran in 2026: prelims on 11, 13 and 30 April 2026 and mains on 7 June 2026. This page is built on RBI's own documents for that cycle, namely the mains information handout and the prelims result notice. Prelims question counts, eligibility details and pay are set afresh in each advertisement, so for those this page tells you where to look instead of quoting a number that might be wrong.

Stage 1: the prelims

The prelims screens candidates for the mains. Expect an objective online test of the usual clerical-level areas (English, numerical ability and reasoning), but confirm the number of questions, marks and time in the current advertisement, because that is the document that governs your exam.

The detail to understand is how RBI applies cut-offs. RBI's published cut-off table for this cycle shows cut-offs applied on the total score, office by office and category by category. You are therefore competing with the applicants for the same office, not against the whole country. Two practical points follow:

  • Choose your office with a view to your language and your home base, not only to vacancy counts, which change by corrigendum.
  • Do not copy cut-off numbers from any website as your target. They differ by office and category and change every cycle, so this page does not quote them. Set your target from your own mock scores.

Stage 2: the mains

TestQuestionsMarksTimeSeconds per question
Reasoning404030 minutes45
English Language404030 minutes45
Numerical Ability404030 minutes45
General Awareness404025 minutes38
Computer Knowledge404020 minutes30
Total200200135 minutes

From RBI's information handout for this exam:

  • Each test is separately timed, so you cannot carry spare time from one to another.
  • Every question has five options.
  • A wrong answer costs one-fourth of the marks assigned to the question.
  • Questions appear in English and in the language selected for the office. The English test is in English.

Two things stand out from the table. First, every test is worth exactly 20% of the mains. There is no heavyweight section to lean on, so a weak area costs the same as a weak area anywhere else. Second, Computer Knowledge is a full test: 40 marks in 20 minutes, the shortest timer of the five. Anyone preparing only from IBPS clerk material will under-prepare it, because the 2026 IBPS clerk mains has no separate computer section.

Worked example on the penalty. In Computer Knowledge, suppose each question is 1 mark. You attempt 36, get 32 right and 4 wrong: 32 − 1 = 31 marks. Had you guessed on 4 more questions at random with five options, you would expect 0.8 right and 3.2 wrong, which is 0.8 − 0.8 = 0 gain. Blind guessing on a five-option question breaks even at best, so guess only after eliminating options.

Language Proficiency Test

The last stage is a Language Proficiency Test in the official language of the state or UT where the office is located. For Tamil Nadu, that is Tamil. Check the current advertisement for how the test is held and what happens if you do not clear it. If you have studied Tamil at school you are likely to be well placed; if you have not, start reading and writing practice early rather than leaving it for the end.

RBI Assistant vs IBPS Clerk (CSA)

Negative markingOne-fourth of the marks0.25 of the marks assigned

Same skills, different mixes. Reasoning, English, Quant and awareness serve both; the RBI exam adds computer knowledge and flatter marks, and the IBPS exam weights Reasoning and Quant more. If you plan to attempt both, follow the IBPS Clerk syllabus and exam pattern for its structure, and see SBI Clerk as well, since SBI's clerk mains is different again. Broader post comparisons are on the bank PO vs clerk page.

Eligibility, pay and vacancies: what to check

These change with each advertisement, so read these lines in the current RBI notification before you commit:

  • Age limit and relaxations for your category, and the date on which age is counted.
  • Educational qualification: graduation, and whether a minimum percentage applies.
  • Computer or word-processing knowledge, and how RBI wants it shown.
  • Official-language requirement of the office you are applying to.
  • Pay and allowances, which the advertisement states for the cycle.
  • Vacancies by office and category, which can be revised by corrigendum.

You can compare the general rules with other bank exams on the bank exam eligibility page. If you are weighing this against the officer path, the RBI Grade B guide covers the officer exam.

Previous papers: what is and is not official

RBI's own prelims result notice says the recruitment is outsourced to an external examination body that does not provide question papers to the client organisation, so RBI cannot provide them even under RTI. Anything sold or shared as "RBI Assistant previous year papers" is therefore a memory-based recreation. These are fine for practice, as long as you treat them as practice and not as the real thing. Prefer the sample questions in RBI's information handouts, then practice papers built on the latest pattern.

How to prepare

  1. Start from the mains pattern, not the prelims. Five equal tests means you need a floor in every one. Use a 12-week plan: weeks 1 to 4 for fundamentals in all five areas, weeks 5 to 8 for 30-minute sectional practice, weeks 9 to 12 for 135-minute full mains mocks plus prelims-style sets.
  2. Make Computer Knowledge a scoring section. At 30 seconds a question it rewards recall. Cover fundamentals, MS Office, networking, internet and security with the computer aptitude guide.
  3. Read awareness daily. 38 seconds a question means knowing, not working out. Use the banking awareness guide for sources and a revision routine, and keep RBI and banking topics sharp for this particular exam.
  4. Keep a mistake log and sort errors into concept, calculation and time pressure.
  5. Add language practice for the LPT in the last month.

Practising with PrepMatic

PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed questions, shows your weakest subjects, and the study plan arranges your weeks around your exam date, daily hours and study days. For sectional timing, build a custom mock by choosing subjects, number of questions, duration and difficulty, such as 40 questions in 30 minutes, and focus it on your weak subjects. Results show accuracy, speed per question and the subject that cost you the most marks.
