Computer awareness for bank exams (also called Computer Aptitude or Computer Knowledge) is tested as a scored section in SBI PO and SBI JA mains, IBPS RRB mains and RBI Assistant mains, but not as a named section in IBPS PO or IBPS CSA in the 2026 cycle. Where it is a separate section, such as IBPS RRB and RBI Assistant, the questions are quick factual recall, which makes it one of the fastest sections to revise. This page shows where it appears, the commonly tested topics, the number-system and shortcut questions you can solve exactly, and a seven-day revision plan.
Where computer awareness appears
| Exam and stage | Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO Prelims and Mains | No computer section in the 2026 notification | None | None | None |
| IBPS CSA (Clerk) Prelims and Mains | No computer section; computer literacy is an eligibility condition | None | None | None |
| SBI PO Mains | Reasoning & Computer Aptitude (combined) | 40 | 60 | 50 min |
| SBI JA Mains | Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude (combined) | 50 | 60 | 45 min |
| IBPS RRB Mains (Scale I, Office Assistant) | Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 15 min |
| IBPS RRB single exam (Scale II, III) | Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 15 min |
| RBI Assistant Mains | Computer Knowledge | 40 | 40 | 20 min |
| NABARD Grade A Prelims (2025 cycle) | Computer Knowledge, qualifying | 20 | Part of 200 | Composite 120 min |
In SBI PO and SBI JA, the advertisements do not say how many of the combined questions are computer questions, so prepare the topics below as a short extra module rather than a full subject. IBPS RRB gives 40 questions for only 20 marks in 15 minutes, about 22 seconds a question. RBI Grade B Phase I has no separate computer section; digital payments appear under Finance & Management in Phase II. Figures come from the 2026 IBPS and SBI documents, the 2025 RBI Assistant handout and the 2025 NABARD advertisement.
Commonly tested topics
IBPS and SBI name only the section, so these topics are commonly tested rather than an official syllabus.
| Area | What to know |
|---|---|
| Fundamentals | Five generations (vacuum tubes, transistors, integrated circuits, microprocessors, AI); supercomputer, mainframe, mini, micro |
| Hardware | CPU parts (ALU, control unit, registers); input devices including OMR, OCR and MICR; output devices; speed order registers, cache, RAM, SSD, HDD |
| Memory | RAM is volatile, ROM is non-volatile; cache sits between CPU and RAM; 8 bits = 1 byte; 1 KB = 1,024 bytes |
| Software | System software (operating system, utilities, compiler, interpreter, assembler) versus application software; firmware |
| Networks and internet | LAN, MAN, WAN; topologies; protocols; IP address, DNS, URL, email |
| MS Office | Word, Excel, PowerPoint features, functions, shortcuts and file extensions |
| Security | Malware types, phishing, firewall, encryption, two-factor authentication |
| Banking technology | CBS, ATM, POS, IFSC, MICR, SWIFT, cheque truncation |
Number systems: solve these exactly
Computers use base 2 (binary). Octal is base 8 and hexadecimal is base 16, where A to F stand for 10 to 15.
- Decimal to binary. 25 = 16 + 8 + 1, so 25 = 11001.
- Binary to decimal. 101101 = 32 + 8 + 4 + 1 = 45.
- Hexadecimal to decimal. 2F = 2 × 16 + 15 = 47.
- Binary addition. 1 + 1 = 10 (write 0, carry 1).
Networking, internet and security at a glance
| Term | What it does or means |
|---|---|
| Hub, switch | A hub sends data to every device. A switch sends it only to the device with the matching MAC address |
| Router, gateway | A router joins networks using IP addresses. A gateway joins networks that use different protocols |
| Modem | Converts digital signals to analogue and back |
| HTTP (port 80), HTTPS (443) | Web traffic; HTTPS is encrypted |
| SMTP (25), POP3 (110), IMAP (143) | SMTP sends email; POP3 and IMAP receive it |
| FTP (21) | Transfers files |
| DNS | Converts a domain name into an IP address |
| IPv4, IPv6 | 32-bit and 128-bit addresses |
| CC, BCC | CC recipients are visible to everyone; BCC recipients are hidden |
| Virus, worm, Trojan | A virus attaches to a host file, a worm spreads over a network by itself, a Trojan poses as useful software |
| Ransomware, spyware, keylogger | Locks data for payment, secretly watches, records keystrokes |
| Phishing, vishing, smishing, pharming | Fraud by fake email or site, by voice call, by SMS, and by redirecting you to a fake site |
| Firewall, encryption, 2FA | Filters network traffic, scrambles data, needs two proofs of identity |
Topologies are a frequent question: in a star network every device connects to a central hub or switch, a bus uses one shared cable, a ring connects devices in a loop and a mesh links devices to many others. In a star, a failed cable affects one device, but a failed central device stops the whole network.

Computers in banking
Questions here sit between computer and banking awareness. A Core Banking Solution (CBS) lets a customer use any branch because accounts live on a central system. MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) reads the 9-digit code on a cheque, and cheque truncation uses images instead of moving paper. An IFSC is 11 characters: four letters for the bank, a zero, then six characters for the branch. SWIFT is the messaging network for international transfers. For UPI, NEFT and RTGS, see banking awareness.
A seven-day revision plan
- Day 1: fundamentals, hardware and memory.
- Day 2: software, operating systems and number systems.
- Day 3: networks, internet, email and protocols.
- Day 4: MS Office and shortcuts.
- Day 5: security and banking technology.
- Day 6: a 40-question mixed test in 15 to 20 minutes.
- Day 7: review the wrong answers and one-line notes.
This plan suits RRB and RBI Assistant. For SBI PO or SBI JA, spend one of these days on computer topics each week and keep reasoning as the main work, using reasoning ability. The patterns are covered in SBI PO, SBI Clerk, IBPS RRB and RBI Assistant. The whole exam is mapped in the bank exam guide.
Practising computer awareness with PrepMatic
In PrepMatic you pick your bank exam and stage, and the exam's own sections appear as subjects. For IBPS RRB mains and RBI Assistant mains, Computer Knowledge is a separate subject. For SBI PO and SBI JA mains it sits inside the combined Reasoning subject. You can take topic tests (about 15 questions, 30 minutes), build a custom mock by choosing the subject, number of questions, duration and difficulty, or generate mocks focused on the weak subjects from the free assessment. Results show a subject-wise breakdown and speed per question, so you can check whether a 40-question block fits the 15 to 20 minutes the exam gives it. Practice questions are AI-generated, not official past papers.
Frequently asked questions
Is computer awareness asked in IBPS PO or IBPS Clerk?
