Quantitative aptitude for bank exams (called Numerical Ability in some papers) is a scored section in the prelims of every major bank exam, and in the mains of IBPS CSA, SBI JA, IBPS RRB and RBI Assistant. IBPS PO and SBI PO mains replace it with Data Analysis & Interpretation. The challenge is time, not difficulty: IBPS PO prelims gives you 20 minutes for 35 questions, about 34 seconds each. This page shows where Quant appears, what is commonly tested, the formulas worth memorising and a practice method. For the whole exam journey, start from the bank exam preparation guide.

These are the 2026 patterns from the IBPS CRP PO-XVI, CSA-XVI and RRBs-XV notifications, the SBI PO and JA 2026 advertisements and the RBI Assistant 2025 mains handout. The RBI Grade B advertisement gives only the paper total, and the RBI Assistant prelims split is from secondary sources, so confirm both in the latest handout. The exact breakdown for each exam is on its own page, such as IBPS PO and IBPS Clerk.

Commonly tested topics and rough weightage

IBPS and SBI notifications name only the section, not a topic list, so there is no official Quant syllabus. The topics below are the ones that recur across papers. The ranges are approximate, unofficial and shift every year, so use them to order your study, never to skip a topic.

Formulas worth memorising

TopicFormula or methodQuick check
Successive changeNet % = a + b + ab/100, keeping signs+20% then −10%: 20 − 10 − 2 = +8%
Profit and discountSP = MP × (1 − d/100); profit % = (SP − CP)/CP × 10020% above cost, then 10% off: 1.2 × 0.9 = 1.08, so 8% profit
SI and CISI = PRT/100; CI amount = P(1 + R/100)^T; for 2 years, CI − SI = P(R/100)²₹5,000 at 10%: CI ₹1,050, SI ₹1,000, difference ₹50
Time and workTotal work = LCM of the days; rate = LCM ÷ daysA 12 days, B 15 days: 60 units, rates 5 and 4
Speedkm/h × 5/18 = m/s; equal-distance average speed = 2xy/(x + y)40 and 60 km/h: 48 km/h
TrainsCrossing time = total length ÷ relative speed; opposite directions add speeds, same direction subtracts150 m train passes a pole in 10 s: 15 m/s = 54 km/h
Boats and streamsStill water = (D + U)/2; stream = (D − U)/2D = 12, U = 8: boat 10, stream 2
AlligationCheaper : dearer = (dearer − mean) : (mean − cheaper)₹40 and ₹55 mixed to ₹48: 7 : 8
AveragesReplacing one value shifts the average by (new − old) ÷ nAverage of 5 numbers is 40; swap 30 for 50: 40 + 20/5 = 44
MensurationCylinder πr²h; cone ⅓πr²h; sphere 4/3 πr³; hemisphere curved surface 2πr²r = 7, h = 10 cylinder: 1,540 (π = 22/7)
Permutationsn letters with repeats: n!/(p! q!)BANKING: 7!/2! = 2,520
ProbabilityFavourable ÷ total2 blue from 4 red, 5 blue, 3 green: C(5,2)/C(12,2) = 10/66 = 5/33

Worked examples

Approximation. Find 39.95% of 649 + 14.98² approximately. Round to 40% of 650 = 260 and 15² = 225, so the answer is about 485. The exact value is 483.7, close enough when prelims options are far apart.

Number series. Three families cover most questions. In 7, 9, 13, 21, 37, ? the differences are 2, 4, 8, 16, so the next difference is 32 and the answer is 69. In 3, 10, 29, 66, 127, ? each term is a cube plus 2 (1³ + 2 up to 5³ + 2), so the next is 6³ + 2 = 218. In 2, 6, 18, 54, 160, 486 the rule is × 3, so the wrong number is 160 (it should be 162).

Quadratic equations. I: x² − 7x + 12 = 0; II: y² − 9y + 20 = 0. Find two numbers whose product is the constant and whose sum is the middle coefficient. With a positive constant and a negative middle term, both roots are positive: x = 3, 4 and y = 4, 5. Test every pairing: x is never above y, and x = y when both are 4. So x ≤ y.

Time and work. A and B together finish in 10 days, B and C in 15 days, A and C in 12 days. Take 60 units of work. The pairs do 6, 4 and 5 units a day. Their sum, 15, counts each person twice, so A + B + C do 7.5 units a day and finish in 60 ÷ 7.5 = 8 days.

Boats and streams. A boat goes 24 km downstream in 2 hours and returns in 3 hours. Downstream speed is 12 km/h and upstream is 8 km/h, so still-water speed is (12 + 8)/2 = 10 km/h and the stream is (12 − 8)/2 = 2 km/h.

Speed techniques that actually help

  • Memorise the base. Squares to 30, cubes to 15, and fraction-percentage pairs to 1/20 (1/7 = 14.29%, 1/9 = 11.11%, 1/12 = 8.33%, 1/16 = 6.25%).
  • Round when options are far apart, compute when they are close. Prelims options usually allow approximation; mains options often do not.
  • Verify with digit sums. 47 × 38 = 1,786. Digit sums: 4 + 7 = 11 → 2 and 3 + 8 = 11 → 2, product 4. The answer's digits give 1 + 7 + 8 + 6 = 22 → 4. A match does not prove the answer, but a mismatch proves an error.
  • Compare fractions by cross-multiplying instead of dividing.
  • Work backwards from options for ages, ratios and percentage questions.

A practice method

  1. Daily, 20 minutes of calculation drill. Tables, squares, fractions, multiplying two-digit numbers mentally.
  2. Learn topics in dependency order. Percentage, ratio, average and profit and loss first. Then SI and CI, time and work, speed and distance. Mixtures, ages, partnership and mensuration after that. Permutations and probability last, since they carry the fewest questions.
  3. One timed sectional each week. Do 35 questions in 20 minutes, then log each miss as a concept gap, a calculation slip or a time-pressure skip. Fix the commonest cause first.
  4. Take three passes in the exam. First pass: simplification, series and quadratics. Second: DI sets you can see through and short arithmetic. Third: whatever time remains. Prelims sections are timed separately in IBPS exams, so use the full 20 minutes on Quant.
  5. Guess only with elimination. CSA, RRB, SBI and RBI Assistant documents deduct one-fourth of the marks assigned to a wrong answer. IBPS PO also penalises wrong answers, so read the exact rule in its notification. Our mock test strategy guide shows how to build accuracy before speed. If you are starting from scratch, see how to prepare for bank exams.

Practising Quant with PrepMatic

PrepMatic's free assessment is about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions and shows whether Quant is among your weakest subjects. You can then take topic tests (about 15 questions, 30 minutes) or a custom mock where you choose the subjects, number of questions, duration and difficulty, including mocks focused on your weak subjects. Results show a subject-wise breakdown, accuracy over time and speed per question. Practice questions are AI-generated; they are not official past papers.

Frequently asked questions

Which Quant topics should I start with for bank exams?

Start with percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, and simplification. Almost every later topic, including data interpretation, time and work and interest, reuses these.

Is the Quant syllabus the same for IBPS, SBI and RRB?

The topics overlap heavily, but the official notifications give only section names. The difference is mostly in difficulty and in the mains, where IBPS PO and SBI PO test advanced DI rather than a separate Quant section.

Is there Quant in IBPS PO mains?

There is no section named Quantitative Aptitude. Data Analysis & Interpretation (40 questions, 60 marks) carries the numerical load, and arithmetic appears inside its caselet and arithmetic sets. See data interpretation for bank exams.

How many Quant questions should I attempt in prelims?

There is no official safe number. Cut-offs change every cycle and are announced after the exam, and several exams apply sectional cut-offs. Build accuracy first, then raise your attempt count in timed sectionals.

Do I need Vedic maths for bank exams?

No. A small set of habits is enough: memorised tables and squares, fraction-percentage pairs, approximation and cross-multiplication. Learning a large trick system costs more time than it saves.

  • IBPS: detailed notifications, the tentative calendar and information handouts with sample question types.
  • SBI careers: PO and Junior Associate advertisements.
  • RBI opportunities: Grade B and Assistant notices and handouts.

Neither IBPS nor SBI publishes past question papers, so "previous year papers" online are memory-based. Always confirm the pattern in the latest notification.
