TNPSC Group 4 is a Tamil Nadu government exam open from SSLC, while IBPS Clerk (officially Customer Service Associate, CSA) is a public sector bank exam that needs a degree. Group 4 is a single 200-question paper with no interview and a compulsory Tamil part; IBPS Clerk is a prelims and a mains in English-based sections. A graduate can write both, and the two exams overlap less than they seem: Group 4 has just 25 aptitude and reasoning questions, against 70 quant and reasoning questions in the IBPS prelims.

Group 4 deducts nothing for a wrong answer, but each question left fully blank costs 0.5 mark, so you shade option E if you do not know the answer. IBPS works the other way round: you lose marks for wrong answers and nothing for a blank.

Who can apply to which

If you have an SSLC or HSC but no degree, only Group 4 is open. If you have a degree, both are open, subject to age. Group 4 allows general-category candidates up to 30, against IBPS's 28, and it is more generous still for reserved-category candidates with a higher qualification: they have no maximum age for most posts. IBPS requires you to be a graduate on the day you register, so a final-year student cannot apply.

Group 4 also requires adequate knowledge of Tamil: SSLC, HSC or a degree with Tamil as a language, or Tamil-medium high school, or TNPSC's Second Class Language Test. Otherwise you must pass that test within 2 years of appointment.

How the preparation differs

  • Tamil versus English. Group 4's Part A is 100 questions in Tamil, and you need 60 marks there for the rest of your paper to count. IBPS has an English section instead.
  • General Studies versus Banking Awareness. Group 4 asks Tamil Nadu history, polity, economy and science. IBPS Mains asks General and Financial Awareness (40 questions).
  • Quant and Reasoning. IBPS gives them far more weight. Group 4 has 15 aptitude and 10 reasoning questions.

So preparing for both means two syllabi with a small overlap. The Group 4 syllabus and the IBPS Clerk pattern show the difference in full.

Dates and timing

On IBPS's tentative calendar, CSA prelims fall on 10 and 11 October 2026 and Mains on 27 December 2026. Group 4 is on 10 January 2027, about two weeks after the Mains. If you plan to sit both, that is the crunch period. IBPS can change its dates, so confirm both.

Who should choose which

  • Group 4 if you want a Tamil Nadu government job in your home state, are comfortable with the Tamil paper, and have an SSLC, HSC or degree.
  • IBPS Clerk if you are a graduate aged 20 to 28 who prefers a bank, and are stronger in English and quant than in Tamil Nadu history.
  • Both if you are a graduate in the age range and can handle two syllabi. Start with the exam that comes first.

Pay is not directly comparable: the Group 4 notification prints pay levels, not rupee amounts, for government posts, while IBPS prints a basic scale.

Preparing

PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows your weakest subjects, and it covers both TNPSC Group 4 and bank exams. Group 4 mocks follow the 200-question paper and can be set in Tamil, and custom mocks can be focused on your weak subjects.

Frequently asked questions

Can a graduate write Group 4?

Yes. The minimum education is SSLC, and a higher qualification does not disqualify you. Check your community's age row in the notification.

Is there negative marking in Group 4 and IBPS Clerk?

Not in the same way. Group 4 has no penalty for wrong answers but takes 0.5 mark for each question left blank. IBPS deducts one-quarter of the marks for a wrong answer.

Which pays more, Group 4 or IBPS Clerk?

The notifications are not on the same footing: Group 4 gives pay levels (Level 8 for most posts) and IBPS gives a basic scale of ₹24,050 to ₹64,480. Compare actual pay with each employer's allowance rules before you decide.
