TNPSC Group 2 study plan: the full plan and a prelims sprint
On this page
A good TNPSC Group 2 study plan has about 26 weeks for the prelims and about 8 weeks for the mains, with Tamil practice every day in both. The prelims only screens candidates, so your rank is built in Paper II of the mains, and most prelims units come back in Paper II at greater depth. That is why the plan below teaches each unit once, deepens it later, and starts mains skills before the prelims is over. If your prelims is only weeks away, jump to the three-week sprint.
Three facts that shape the plan
- Language is half the paper. Part A has 100 of the 200 prelims questions, in General Tamil or General English at SSLC standard. Tamil practice also feeds the Paper I gate in the mains, so language practice never stops.
- Prelims marks do not count for rank. They only decide whether you are shortlisted, at about 1:10 per reservation group. The rank comes from Paper II. Details are in the Group 2 exam pattern.
- Notice periods are short. The 2025 notification (15 July) came about 11 weeks before the prelims (28 September 2025), and the 2026 prelims is reported for 1 November, almost 12 weeks after the 11 August notification. That is a pattern, not a promise for the next cycle, but it means a plan that starts at the notification is a sprint.
How to split your study time
This split starts from question counts. It is a starting point, not a TNPSC figure, so adjust it after your first mock.
| Area | Prelims questions | Suggested share of time | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Tamil or English | 100 | 25% | Half the questions, plus Paper I |
| Aptitude and reasoning | 25 | 12% | Speed skill, practised daily |
| Tamil Nadu history, culture, movements | 20 | 14% | Large unit, returns in both Paper IIs |
| Economy and development administration | 20 | 14% | Large unit, Tamil Nadu-heavy |
| Indian polity | 15 | 10% | Unit V in Group II is worth 60 marks |
| History and national movement | 10 | 7% | Feeds mains Unit I |
| General science | 5 | 4% | Small unit; summary notes |
| Geography | 5 | 4% | Small unit; maps and facts |
| Current affairs | Inside Units I, II, IV, V | 10% | Written into the syllabus text |
Many aspirants use Samacheer Kalvi Class 6 to 12 books as the base. TNPSC does not prescribe them, though it says the Part A literature unit is based on school textbooks up to SSLC. The best books for TNPSC page lists options, and the unit lists are in the Group 2 syllabus.
The full Group 2 study plan: about 8 months
| Phase | Weeks | Focus | Finish line |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Foundation | 1 to 8 | Read the syllabus end to end. First pass on Tamil, aptitude basics, Tamil Nadu history, polity | A baseline assessment, a first read of three big units, daily Tamil habit |
| 2. Build | 9 to 18 | Finish all remaining units. One topic test per unit. Start one Unit II answer a week | Every unit read once, error log running, first score trend |
| 3. Prelims drill | 19 to 24 | Revision cycle 1, a full mock every week, current affairs, OMR practice | A short list of weak topics, mock scores moving up |
| 4. Prelims final | 25 to 26 | Revision cycle 2 from your error log, two full mocks, no new topics | Calm, rested, hall ticket and route checked |
| 5. Mains | 27 to 34 | Choose Group II, IIA or both, then Paper I, Paper II and weekly full papers | See the mains switch below |
If you are starting with fewer than 26 weeks, shorten Phases 1 and 2 by cutting first-pass depth on the small units (science and geography), not by dropping Tamil or aptitude.
A weekly structure that works
Six study days, one test day. Three blocks run every day, whatever the topic.
| Daily block | Full-time (about 7 hours) | Working (about 3.5 hours) |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil or English | 90 minutes | 45 minutes |
| Aptitude or reasoning | 60 minutes | 30 minutes |
| Current affairs | 30 minutes | 20 minutes |
| General Studies topic block | 3 hours | 90 minutes |
| Revision and error log | 60 minutes | 30 minutes |
| Day | General Studies block |
|---|---|
| Monday | Economy and development administration |
| Tuesday | Polity |
| Wednesday | Tamil Nadu history and culture |
| Thursday | History and national movement, then geography |
| Friday | General science and a topic test |
| Saturday | Mains skill (a Unit II answer or a reasoning set) and weekly revision |
| Sunday | Full or half mock, then an hour on the error log |
Revise each topic one day, one week and one month after you first study it, and write every wrong or blank mock answer in an error log with the reason. The mock test guide explains how to analyse a mock, and the current affairs guide covers sources.
When to switch to mains mode
Do not wait for the prelims result, because in 2025 TNPSC announced the mains date with the result. Use this order:
- Day after the prelims: rest, then compare the official answer key (TNPSC publishes keys for objective papers) with your recalled answers. Do not predict a cut-off.
- Day 3: decide Group II, IIA or both with the Group 2 vs 2A guide.
- Weeks 27 to 30: Paper I tasks daily, and either one timed answer a day (Group II) or 100 timed MCQs plus a reasoning set (Group IIA).
- Weeks 31 to 34: a full 3-hour Paper II every week, plus a Paper I essay and letter. The Group 2 mains preparation page has the time plan.
Prelims in a few weeks: the three-week sprint
The 2026 prelims is reported for 1 November 2026 (confirm on tnpsc.gov.in). If you are about three weeks out, do not restart the syllabus. Protect the marks that are easiest to win. The plan assumes about 5 hours a day, so scale it down if you have less.
| Week | Daily plan | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Day 1: a full 200-question mock cold, 3 hours, then analyse each part. Days 2 to 7: Tamil or English 2 hours, aptitude 1 hour, Tamil Nadu history and economy units 2 hours | A baseline and a list of the five weakest topics |
| 2 | Language 2 hours, aptitude 1 hour, polity and history 2 hours. Science, geography and current affairs as short summaries only. Mocks on days 10 and 14 | Two more scores and a tighter error log |
| 3 | Revise the error log, formulas and the Tamil Nadu units. One mock on day 17. Days 20 and 21: no new topics, check the hall ticket and route | Rested, with a plan for the OMR sheet |
Three rules for the sprint:
- Never leave an OMR question blank. The notification deducts 0.5 mark for every question left completely blank, and it states no deduction for a wrong answer, so shade a guess or [E]. The marking scheme guide has the details.
- Aim well above 90. The minimum qualifying mark is 90 out of 300, but shortlisting is by the 1:10 line.
- Language first. With 100 questions, a daily 2-hour Tamil or English block pays more than extra hours on a 5-question unit.

Frequently asked questions
How many months do I need to prepare for Group 2?
Starting from scratch, plan about 6 months for the prelims and about 2 for the mains. If you already know the syllabus, a focused revision of 3 to 8 weeks is possible. TNPSC does not set a preparation period, so adjust to your starting point.
Should I prepare for the prelims and the mains together?
For General Studies, yes. Prelims units return in Paper II at greater depth, so study each once and deepen it. Add writing practice (Group II) or CBT practice (Group IIA) from Phase 2, and go fully into mains mode after the prelims.
How many hours a day should I study for Group 2?
Full-time aspirants usually plan about 6 to 8 hours and working aspirants about 3 to 4 hours on weekdays, with longer weekends. Consistency matters more than a single heroic day.
Can I clear the Group 2 prelims in three weeks?
It depends on your starting base. The sprint above is built for people who already know most of the syllabus and need to focus their revision. It cannot promise a result, and starting earlier always helps.
When is the Group 2 prelims in 2026?
News reports say 1 November 2026, but confirm on tnpsc.gov.in. The annual planner had tentatively said 25 October 2026, and exam dates can shift after notification.
