In TNPSC Group 2 vs Group 2A, the two share one application and one prelims, and split at the mains. Group II is the smaller, higher-level list (50 posts in 2025, at pay Levels 16 and 18) and has a 300-mark descriptive Paper II. Group IIA is the larger list (595 posts in 2025, at Levels 9 to 12), mostly assistant and inspector posts, and has a 200-question computer-based Paper II. Neither has an interview in the 2025 scheme. Older articles that call Group 2 "interview posts" and Group 2A "non-interview posts" are describing a scheme that the 2025 notification replaced.

The notification prints levels, not rupee amounts, and groups posts under merged pay cells, so check the line for your own post code. Most government posts are tagged as Contributory Pension Scheme posts. For pay-matrix detail across groups, see TNPSC salary by group. In 2025 the largest single blocks in Group IIA were Assistant in School Education (109), Assistant in Medical and Rural Health Services (74) and Senior Inspector (Dairy) (65). Vacancies were tentative, and an addendum issued in December 2025 revised some of them.

Post-specific conditions to check before you commit:

  • Forester needs a science or engineering degree in a listed subject, minimum height and chest measurements, and an Endurance Test.
  • Assistant Section Officer (TNPSC) needs a Master's degree, or a Bachelor's with a B.G.L., or a Bachelor's with first class in one of its parts. Candidates from reserved categories need only a Bachelor's degree.
  • Audit Inspector (HR&CE) and Executive Officer Grade III are open only to candidates professing the Hindu religion.
  • Probation Officer and Forester need the Standard-I vision level, while most other posts need Standard-III or better.

How the exams differ after the prelims

The prelims and Paper I are identical, so most of your first months of preparation are shared. The split is in Paper II.

Group II Paper II asks you to write about 24 answers and 3,600 words in 3 hours, across seven units. It rewards structured writing, Tamil Nadu examples and unit-wise depth. Only this paper decides your rank.

Group IIA Paper II is 200 questions in 3 hours, about 54 seconds each. It has 150 General Studies questions in five units, 130 of them in units that name Tamil Nadu in the title, plus 50 reasoning questions drawn from 27 listed topics. It rewards recall, speed and reasoning accuracy. Unit II alone, on Administration of States with reference to Tamil Nadu, has 45 questions.

The full unit lists are in the Group 2 syllabus, and the writing side is covered in Group 2 mains preparation.

Can you aim for both?

Yes. You apply once, and the mains shortlist is drawn separately for each service. The 2025 notification sets a Rs.300 mains fee for candidates shortlisted for both, against Rs.150 for one, so it expects some candidates to be in both. Two points matter:

  • A candidate already selected for a Group II post is not considered for Group IIA and cannot attend Group IIA counselling. A good Group II rank therefore takes priority.
  • Preparing for both means two kinds of Paper II practice: timed writing and timed objective questions. Plan for that load before you decide.

How to choose between them

  1. Start from the post. List the posts you would be happy to join, then see which group they belong to. A Sub Registrar or Probation Officer is Group II. An Assistant in a department or an Audit Inspector is Group IIA.
  2. Compare the level. Group II posts are printed at Levels 16 and 18, Group IIA at 9 to 12.
  3. Look at the size of the room. At the 1:10 shortlist, 50 posts mean about 500 candidates in the Group II mains, and 595 posts mean about 5,950 in Group IIA, before ties and before reservation splits the numbers. Group II is a smaller room with few seats, and Group IIA a bigger room with many.
  4. Test your writing. Write two 200-word answers on a unit, timed. If it feels natural, Group II is open to you. If you would rather spend your time on objective practice, Group IIA suits you.
  5. Check eligibility conditions for the specific post, such as the qualification, vision standard or religion rule above.

What the 2026 notification is reported to offer

News sites report Notification No. 07/2026 of 11 August 2026, with 821 vacancies: 41 in Group II and 780 in Group IIA, and prelims reportedly on 1 November 2026. If correct, Group IIA has roughly nineteen times as many posts as Group II this cycle. We could not confirm the official document, so check tnpsc.gov.in. For the other groups, see TNPSC groups explained and the TNPSC hub.

Testing your fit with PrepMatic

PrepMatic's free assessment (about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions) shows your weakest and strongest subjects, which helps you judge how much ground the shared prelims will take. Its objective mocks and custom mocks suit the prelims and the Group IIA Paper II format, and you can set Tamil as your exam language. PrepMatic has no descriptive answer practice, so it cannot help you rehearse the Group II Paper II.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an interview in Group 2 or Group 2A?

No. In the 2025 notification, ranking for both is based only on Main Paper II marks. The idea of Group 2 "interview posts" comes from an older scheme.

Which is better, Group 2 or Group 2A?

Neither is better for everyone. Group II posts sit at higher pay levels and have fewer vacancies; Group IIA has many more posts at Levels 9 to 12. Choose by the post you want and the Paper II format that suits you.

Is Group 2A easier than Group 2?

TNPSC does not rank them by difficulty. Group IIA Paper II is objective and computer-based, while Group II Paper II is descriptive. Both share the same prelims and Tamil Eligibility Test, so the prelims bar is the same.

Can I appear for both Group 2 and Group 2A?

Yes. One application and one prelims serve both, and you can be shortlisted for both mains. If you are selected for a Group II post, you are not considered for Group IIA.

What is the age limit for Group 2 and Group 2A?

In the 2025 notification, Others could be 18 to 32 for most posts (Executive Officer Grade III 25 to 37, Forester 21 to 32), and BC, MBC, SC and ST candidates had no maximum for most posts. Check the age table for your post in the current notification.
