TNPSC Group 2 mains preparation: Paper I, descriptive Paper II and the 2A CBT
On this page
TNPSC Group 2 mains preparation means getting three things right. First, pass the Tamil Eligibility Test (Paper I), which needs 40 out of 100 and is qualifying only. Second, for Group II, learn to write about 24 timed answers of 100 or 200 words in Paper II, because only that paper decides your rank. Third, for Group IIA, train for a 200-question computer-based Paper II. The two Paper IIs need different practice, so decide which one you are preparing for early.
What Group 2 mains preparation involves for each group
| Group II | Group IIA | |
|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Tamil Eligibility Test, descriptive, pass at 40 | Same |
| Paper II | General Studies, 300 marks, descriptive | General Studies and reasoning, 200 questions, 300 marks, computer-based |
| Main skill | Structured writing under time pressure | Recall, speed and reasoning accuracy |
| Daily practice | 1 or 2 timed answers, written by hand | 50 to 100 timed MCQs, plus reasoning sets |
| Weekly test | One 3-hour descriptive paper | One 3-hour CBT-style paper |
Marks, ranking rules and shortlist ratios are in the Group 2 exam pattern, and the unit lists are in the Group 2 syllabus.
Paper I: treat it as a gate
Paper I is a Tamil Eligibility Test at SSLC standard. Its marks are not counted for rank, but if you score below 40 your Paper II is not evaluated. The notification lists these tasks:
- translation from Tamil to English and from English to Tamil;
- précis writing;
- comprehension of a passage;
- expansion of a short outline into a full passage;
- an essay on one of six Thirukkural themes;
- an official letter;
- questions on Tamil language knowledge, such as meaning differences, antonyms, splitting words and error correction.
A weekly routine that covers all of them: two translation passages in each direction, one précis of a newspaper editorial cut to about a third of its length, one expansion exercise, one official letter (an application, a complaint or a request to an authority), and one essay. For the essay, prepare six outlines, one for each theme the syllabus names, and memorise two or three kurals you can quote exactly for each. Aim for 60 in your own marking so that a hard paper does not push you under 40. The rules and format are in the Tamil eligibility test guide, and language-skill practice is in General Tamil.
Group II Paper II: the descriptive paper
Know the structure
You write 9 answers of 10 marks in Part A, 3 of 5 answers of 10 marks in Part B (all from Unit II), and 12 answers of 15 marks in Part C (two of three in each of six sections). The notification gives 100 words for each 10-mark answer and 200 words for each 15-mark answer, about 3,600 words in all.
Plan the 180 minutes
| Task | Answers | Minutes each | Total minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part A, 10 marks | 9 | 5 | 45 |
| Part B, 10 marks | 3 | 5 | 15 |
| Part C, 15 marks | 12 | 8 | 96 |
| Reading, choosing questions, checking | 24 | ||
| Total | 24 | 180 |
That is about half a minute per mark. It means writing roughly 23 words a minute for two and a half hours, which is harder than it sounds. Time a 30-minute block to learn your real speed, and shorten your answers rather than overrun.
Write to a template
- 10 marks, 100 words: a one-line opening that defines or sets the context, three or four short points each with a fact, scheme, Act or place, and a one-line close.
- 15 marks, 200 words: a two-line opening, five or six points grouped under two or three underlined sub-headings, one concrete Tamil Nadu example for each group, and a two-line close.
Tamil Nadu content is built into the paper. Five of the seven units (230 of the 300 marks) say "with specific reference to Tamil Nadu", and Unit II (30 marks) is Tamil society and heritage. An answer that names a Tamil Nadu Act, scheme, place or person will usually be stronger than a generic one.
Spend time by marks
| Unit | Marks | Where it is asked |
|---|---|---|
| V. Polity and governance | 60 | 3 questions in Part A, section D in Part C |
| III. Social issues | 50 | 2 in Part A, section B in Part C |
| I, IV, VI, VII | 40 each | 1 in Part A, one section in Part C |
| II. Tamil society and culture | 30 | 3 of 5 in Part B |
Unit II is fully listed in the syllabus (Keezhadi, Adichanallur, Arikamedu, Thirukkural, Vallalar, the Justice Party, the Self-Respect Movement and so on), and it is the unit where you can be most complete. It is also the one that may be answered in Tamil or in English. Because you must answer two of three in every Part C section, you can afford one weak topic per unit but not a whole weak unit.
Practise from the syllabus text
Each phrase in the unit text can become a question. These practice prompts are built from phrases the syllabus names. They are not past questions.
| Unit and marks | Practice prompt | Skeleton |
|---|---|---|
| I, 10 | Explain the causes and outcome of the Vellore Mutiny. | Context, trigger, event, outcome, significance |
| II, 10 | Why are the Keezhadi excavations important for the study of ancient Tamil society? | What was found, what it shows, link to Sangam literature |
| V, 15 | Discuss the role of the District Collector in development administration in Tamil Nadu. | Opening, three roles, one scheme, one challenge, close |
| VI, 10 | Distinguish in-situ from ex-situ conservation of biodiversity. | Definitions, two examples each, one-line verdict |
| VII, 15 | Examine the main components of the New Economic Policy. | Rationale, privatisation, deregulation, trade liberalisation, impact |
Write one answer a day and one full timed paper a week. For past papers, look at TNPSC's previous question papers page, but do not assume every year is there, and treat older papers as topic hints because earlier cycles followed earlier schemes. Always follow the current notification's pattern. Keep a short log of the facts you missed, and add the current-affairs items the syllabus mentions in Units III to VII; the current affairs guide covers what to read.
Follow the answer-booklet rules
The notification's exam-hall instructions can get a booklet invalidated, so rehearse them:
- Use a black ink pen, the same type and shade for everything, including underlining and striking out. No whitener, pencil, sketch pens or coloured pens.
- Write the whole paper in Tamil or the whole paper in English. Mixing is a ground for invalidation, apart from technical words that cannot be translated and cases the notification expressly permits, such as the Unit II note.
- Do not write your name, signature, phone number or any identifying mark, and do not appeal to the examiner.
- The question number must match the answer. Mismatched or altered numbers can lead to the answer not being evaluated.
Group IIA Paper II: the computer-based test
This paper has 150 General Studies questions and 50 reasoning questions in 180 minutes, about 54 seconds each. A workable split is 45 minutes for reasoning, 120 for General Studies and 15 for review.
- Learn the interface. Questions appear one at a time with five options, you answer with a mouse, and you must click Save and Next or the answer is not saved. You can mark for review, skip and go back until time ends. TNPSC offers a practice CBT on its website, so use it until the screen feels routine.
- Follow the weight. Unit II (administration with reference to Tamil Nadu) has 45 questions, and 130 of the 150 General Studies questions are in units that name Tamil Nadu.
- Practise reasoning daily. There are 27 listed topics, from analogy and coding-decoding to mirror images, embedded figures and square completion. Rotate through them and note the types that take you longest.
- Check the unanswered-question rule. The blank-answer deduction in the notification is worded for OMR sheets, so read the latest instructions for how unanswered questions on screen are treated.
Practising for mains with PrepMatic
PrepMatic is built for objective practice, so it supports the Group IIA Paper II side of mains: full-length and custom mocks where you choose subjects, number of questions, duration and difficulty, topic tests, and mocks focused on your weak subjects from the free assessment. You can set Tamil as your exam language. It has no descriptive answer practice or evaluation, so for Group II Paper II and the Tamil Eligibility Test you need to write by hand and get feedback from a mentor, a study group or your own checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Group 2 mains descriptive?
For Group II, both papers are descriptive. For Group IIA, only Paper I, the qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test, is descriptive. Group IIA Paper II is an objective computer-based test.
How many words should a Group 2 mains answer be?
The Group II Paper II pattern gives 100 words for each 10-mark answer and 200 words for each 15-mark answer.
Can I write the Group 2 mains in Tamil?
Yes. You can write the whole paper in Tamil or the whole paper in English. Mixing languages can invalidate the booklet, except for technical words that cannot be translated and cases the notification expressly permits, such as Unit II, which carries a note allowing Tamil or English.
What is the pass mark in the Group 2 mains Tamil paper?
You need 40 out of 100 in Paper I. The marks are not counted for rank, but Paper II is evaluated only if you pass.
Where can I find previous Group 2 mains papers?
Start with TNPSC's previous question papers page, and check which years are available. Do not rely on older papers for the pattern, because earlier cycles followed earlier schemes (Group IIA mains, for one, used to be descriptive).
