There is no single "best book" list for TNPSC, and the Commission does not publish one. The practical answer for most aspirants is to start with the free Samacheer Kalvi school textbooks (Class 6 to 10 for Group 4, plus Class 11 and 12 for Group 2), then add one standard reference for polity, modern history and economy, and one practice book for aptitude. Choose fewer books and read them three times.

What TNPSC itself says about books

TNPSC's notifications do not name textbooks. The one place the Group 4 syllabus mentions school books is Part A, Unit VII, the literature unit, which "is based on school textbooks (up to SSLC Standard)". The General Studies units are described by topic, and each unit's standard is stated: SSLC standard for Group 4, degree standard for the Group 2 and 2A prelims General Studies.

So the advice to read Class 6 to 12 Samacheer Kalvi books is a coaching-industry convention, not a TNPSC rule. It is a sound convention, because the Group 4 syllabus is pitched at SSLC level and the state board books are the closest match to that level and to Tamil Nadu content. Just do not treat it as official, and always check your reading against the syllabus in the latest notification.

Where to get the textbooks, free and official

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department hosts the books at tnschools.gov.in/textbooks. They are available class by class. Many blog posts still link to the older textbooksonline.tn.nic.in address, which no longer works, so use the TN Schools site.

Two points before you download anything:

  • Pick the current edition. Samacheer Kalvi books have been revised in phases. A PDF from a blog or a guidebook may follow an older edition, and page numbers or chapter numbers may not match what you see on the official site.
  • Match the language to your exam language. Parts B and C of the Group 4 paper are bilingual (Tamil and English). Read the book in the language you studied, but learn the other language's key terms too, particularly in science, where questions may use English terms.

Books by unit

This table follows the six General Studies units of the Group 4 notification, plus the Tamil and aptitude parts. "Core" means the school books that match Group 4. "Add for Group 2 and Group 1" means more depth for the degree-standard papers. The last column lists widely used standard references. They are common choices, not official recommendations.

Part or unitCore: Samacheer KalviAdd for Group 2 and Group 1Commonly used references
Part A: Tamil language and literatureTamil textbooks, Class 6 to 10Class 11 and 12 TamilSee the General Tamil guide
I. General ScienceScience, Class 6 to 10Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology, selectivelyNone needed for Group 4
II. GeographySocial Science (geography portions), Class 6 to 10Class 11 and 12 Geography where availableAn atlas of India and Tamil Nadu
III. History of India and the Indian National MovementSocial Science (history portions), Class 6 to 10Class 11 and 12 HistorySpectrum's A Brief History of Modern India; Bipan Chandra's India's Struggle for Independence
IV. Indian PolitySocial Science (civics portions), Class 6 to 10Class 11 and 12 Political ScienceM. Laxmikanth's Indian Polity
V. Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil NaduSocial Science (economics portions), Class 6 to 10Class 11 and 12 EconomicsRamesh Singh's Indian Economy; Tamil Nadu Government budget and policy documents
VI. History, Culture and Heritage of Tamil NaduSocial Science history, Class 6 to 10, and the Tamil textbooks for literatureClass 11 and 12 HistoryK. K. Pillai's Tamilaga Varalaru: Makkalum Panpadum
Part C: Aptitude and Mental AbilityMathematics, Class 6 to 10SameA topic-wise practice book such as R. S. Aggarwal's Quantitative Aptitude

Only use a reference book for as much of it as the syllabus needs. Laxmikanth, for example, covers far more than the Group 4 polity unit, so use it as a map and a revision aid, not as something to finish cover to cover. The subject guides on Indian polity, Indian economy and Tamil Nadu history and culture show what each unit asks.

Tamil Nadu government documents

Several Tamil Nadu facts are best learned from official documents, not from textbooks, because they change every year:

  • The State Budget speech and the departmental policy notes, for schemes, allocations and new institutions.
  • The Government of Tamil Nadu portal, tn.gov.in, for announcements and orders.
  • Census of India tables, for population data (see TNPSC geography).

For Unit V and for current affairs, always check that you are reading the most recent year's document. A list of welfare schemes from a previous government year may be out of date.

A minimal book list for each group

Group 4 and VAO (SSLC standard). Samacheer Kalvi Tamil, Science, Social Science and Mathematics for Classes 6 to 10, one aptitude practice book, your own notes, and a set of mock tests. That is enough. Adding five more books is the commonest way to stop revising.

Group 2 and 2A (degree-standard General Studies). Add the Class 11 and 12 books in History, Political Science, Economics and the sciences, one polity reference, one modern-history reference and one economy reference. For the descriptive Group 2 mains, see the Group 2 mains preparation guide.

Group 1. Add deeper reading in each General Studies area, and see the Group 1 preparation strategy page. TNPSC's Group 1 mains syllabus needs separate study, so do not rely on a prelims list alone.

How to use a textbook for this exam

  1. First pass, quick: read the whole book in a week to see its shape.
  2. Second pass, slow: read with a pencil. Underline names, dates, definitions and numbers. Do the in-chapter boxes and maps; they are favourites for objective questions.
  3. Make a table: convert each chapter into a table or timeline on one sheet.
  4. Third pass, test: close the book and answer questions from memory, then return to the text for what you missed.
  5. Revise the sheets, not the books, in the last two months.

Textbook questions are also a good source of practice. After each chapter, write five questions yourself in the exam's four-option format.

Previous papers

TNPSC has a previous question papers page on its website. What it currently lists, and how far back it goes, can change, so check it directly instead of relying on a blog that claims to have every paper. The method for using past papers (when, how many times, and with an error log) is in the Group 4 previous year questions guide.

Using your books with PrepMatic

PrepMatic is not a textbook and does not replace one. You can upload your own notes, such as a chapter summary or a compiled unit sheet, and generate a mock test from them (the free Basic plan allows 2 uploaded documents). You can also build custom mocks by choosing subjects, number of questions, duration and difficulty, and, if you pick Tamil as your exam language, practise the questions in Tamil. Practice questions are AI-generated, so use your Samacheer books to settle any doubt. The mock tests guide explains how to fit them into your week.

Frequently asked questions

Does TNPSC recommend Samacheer Kalvi books?

No. TNPSC does not name books for General Studies. It only says that the Part A literature unit is based on school textbooks up to SSLC standard. Reading Class 6 to 12 Samacheer Kalvi books is a widely followed convention, not an official instruction.

Where can I download Samacheer Kalvi books officially?

From the Tamil Nadu School Education Department's textbook page at tnschools.gov.in/textbooks, which has books for each class. The older textbooksonline.tn.nic.in address cited on many websites no longer resolves.

Is Class 6 to 10 enough for Group 4?

The Group 4 syllabus is at SSLC standard, so the Class 6 to 10 books are the natural core. Add current affairs, Tamil Nadu government documents, an aptitude practice book and mock tests. Class 11 and 12 books are mostly for Group 2 and above.

Which book should I use for polity?

Many aspirants use M. Laxmikanth's Indian Polity alongside the Samacheer civics portions. For Group 4, the school books cover the unit, and Laxmikanth is best used selectively for constitutional articles and structure.

Do I need to buy guide books or coaching notes?

Not necessarily. The syllabus is public, and the textbooks are free. A guide or notes set can save time if it matches the current syllabus, but check that it follows the latest unit structure, since older lists with ten units are out of date for Group 4.
