Forest Guard vs Forest Watcher: what the Group 4 notification says
On this page
Forest Guard (with Driving Licence) and Forest Watcher are two forest posts in the TNPSC Group 4 notification of 6 October 2026. Forest Guard is at pay Level 5 with 1 vacancy (post code 3318), and Forest Watcher is at Level 3 with 40 vacancies (post code 3319). Both need a pass in the same written paper as the rest of Group 4, and both add a physical standards test and an endurance walk held only in Chennai.

The driving licence in the first post's name is a condition of that post. The notification states what licence you must hold and by when, so read the entry for code 3318 before you apply. The general Group 4 maximum-age figures may not apply unchanged to these two posts, so read their rows in the notification's age table.
Why the age rule needs attention
In most Group 4 posts, a BC, MBC or SC/ST candidate who holds a qualification higher than SSLC has no maximum age (they must not have completed 60). The notification excludes three posts from that rule: VAO, Forest Guard and Forest Watcher. If you are a reserved-category candidate with an HSC or a degree and you are above the normal maximum, these posts will not open up for you the way a Junior Assistant post does. Check your category's row in the age table for your post code.
The endurance walk, in plain numbers
The walk for men is 25 km in 4 hours, a steady pace of 6.25 km per hour. For women and third gender candidates it is 16 km in 4 hours, which is 4 km per hour. The test is at Chennai, so candidates from other districts must plan travel and stay.
- Build distance gradually and walk at your target pace, not only slowly.
- Practise on the kind of surface and in the kind of weather you expect on test day.
- Keep the written paper in view as well. The physical tests are in addition to the written paper, not instead of it.
Speak to a doctor if you have any health doubts before training hard.
Who should choose which
- Forest Watcher if you want a forest-department post with the larger intake. With 40 vacancies against 1, it is the realistic target for most candidates this cycle.
- Forest Guard with Driving Licence if you already hold the licence the notification asks for and want the higher pay level, knowing there is a single vacancy in this notification.
- Neither if you do not meet the age or physical conditions. Other Group 4 posts, such as Junior Assistant, are open with only an SSLC pass. For graduates, a related forest post called Forester appears in Group 2, at Level 16, with its own endurance test. See Group 4 vs Group 2.
Vacancies can be revised before counselling, so treat counts as a snapshot.
Preparing for the written paper
The written part is the common Group 4 paper, so your marks in it matter as much as for any other post. Part A is the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test, and you need 60 out of 150 there for the rest of the paper to be evaluated. The Group 4 exam pattern and syllabus lay out every part, and the eligibility guide covers age and education.
PrepMatic helps with the written paper only. Its free assessment of about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions shows your weakest subjects, and its Group 4 mocks follow the 200-question paper and can be taken in Tamil. It has no fitness or physical-test training.
