Both Group 1 and Group 2 need a degree, but they are very different exams. Group 1 (Deputy Collector, DSP and similar posts at Level 22) has a prelims, a mains of three General Studies papers and a 100-mark interview, and the 2025 notification had 70 vacancies. Group 2 and 2A (645 vacancies in 2025) have no interview in the 2025 scheme and rank you on a single mains paper. Group 2 is the wider door; Group 1 is the senior state service.

How the stages differ

Group 1 asks for sustained writing. Its mains is three degree-level General Studies papers of 250 marks each, written descriptively, after the Tamil qualifying paper, and then an interview that adds up to 100 marks to your final rank. The Group 1 exam pattern covers each stage, and the Group 1 interview guide covers the last one.

Group 2 splits into two tracks after the common prelims. Group II mains is descriptive and ranks you on Paper II alone. Group IIA mains is a computer-based objective paper. Neither stage has an interview. That makes Group 2 more predictable, since your rank is a pure function of one paper.

The prelims also differ in shape. Group 1 prelims is 175 General Studies questions at degree level plus 25 aptitude. Group 2 prelims spends 100 questions on language (General Tamil or General English, SSLC standard) and 75 on General Studies. That affects how you spread study time.

Who should choose which

  • Group 1 if you want the Level 22 posts, are comfortable with long descriptive answers, and can invest in mains answer writing and interview preparation. Your age matters: 34 for Others and 39 for reserved categories in 2025.
  • Group 2 or 2A if you want a state government job with no interview, have a degree, and prefer a rank decided by one paper. Group 2A (Level 9 to 12) is objective throughout the mains.
  • Both is a common plan. The degree-level General Studies carries over. Check the TNPSC annual planner for when each exam is expected to be notified.

Planning the two together

Prelims and mains for the two are on different calendars, and the Tamil Eligibility Test sits in both mains. Start with the Group 1 preparation strategy for mains reading, and use the Group 2 study plan for the language and aptitude load.

PrepMatic covers Group 1 prelims, Group 2 and 2A with objective practice. Its free assessment, about 15 untimed questions, shows your weakest subjects, and mocks match the real prelims pattern. It does not offer descriptive answer writing or interview practice, so Group 1 mains and the Group II Paper II need another route.

Frequently asked questions

Does Group 2 have an interview?

Not in the 2025 scheme. Both Group II and Group IIA are ranked on Main Paper II marks. Group 1 has a 100-mark interview, and the Group 1 final rank is out of 850.

Is Group 2 easier than Group 1?

They test differently. Group 1 has a 175-question degree-level General Studies prelims and three descriptive mains papers, with an interview. Group 2 has a mixed prelims and a single Paper II. Compare the rank you can reach in each, not the label.

Can I write Group 1 and Group 2 in the same year?

Yes, if you meet the age and degree conditions for each and the dates do not clash. Check the TNPSC annual planner and the notifications for the year.
