TNPSC Group 1 vs UPSC Civil Services: the two exams compared
On this page
TNPSC Group 1 fills senior Tamil Nadu state posts such as Deputy Collector and DSP, while the UPSC Civil Services Examination fills the IAS, IPS, IFS and other central services. Both have three stages (prelims, mains, interview) and both use a screening prelims, but UPSC's mains is far longer, with nine papers against Group 1's four. Group 1 is a state exam in the Tamil Nadu pay matrix, and UPSC is an all-India exam. Many aspirants prepare for both because the General Studies base overlaps.

What the numbers mean
Group 1 mains is three degree-level General Studies papers plus a qualifying Tamil paper, so the written load is lighter than UPSC's. UPSC mains asks for an essay, four General Studies papers and two optional-subject papers, so the optional subject becomes a separate project of its own. UPSC Prelims also has negative marking of one-third of the marks for a wrong answer, which changes how you attempt questions. For TNPSC's wrong-answer rule on its objective papers, see the TNPSC marking scheme.
The interview also differs in weight. Group 1's interview is 100 of 850 marks, and UPSC's personality test is 275 of 2,025.
Language and medium
TNPSC sets General Studies questions in Tamil and English, and Group 1 mains includes the Tamil Eligibility Test. UPSC prelims is in English and Hindi. In mains, answers may be written in English or in one of the languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, which includes Tamil, subject to UPSC's rules for that language, and an optional paper in Tamil literature has been available. Check the current notification for these conditions.
Who should choose which
- Group 1 only if your aim is a Tamil Nadu state career, the Tamil paper plays to your strength, and you want a shorter mains.
- UPSC if you want an all-India service and are ready for a long preparation, an optional subject and a bigger syllabus.
- Both if your age allows. The General Studies preparation overlaps, but the exams ask for different depth and different answer styles, so plan separate mains practice for each. See the Group 1 preparation strategy.
- Mind the age windows. Group 1 stops at 34 for the general category in 2025, and UPSC at 32, so the TNPSC window is two years longer for the general category.
Planning your preparation
Cover the shared base first: Indian polity, economy, history, geography and science. Then branch into the Tamil Nadu syllabus for Group 1 or the optional subject and ethics for UPSC. Start with the Group 1 syllabus and the Group 1 exam pattern, then write interview answers early with the Group 1 interview guide.
PrepMatic supports Group 1 prelims with objective practice and a free assessment of about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions that shows your weakest subjects. It does not cover UPSC or descriptive mains writing, so use other routes for those.
Frequently asked questions
Is TNPSC Group 1 easier than UPSC?
They differ rather than rank. Group 1 has a shorter mains and a smaller syllabus, but only 70 vacancies in 2025 and a 100-mark interview. UPSC has a longer mains and an optional subject. Judge by the preparation load you can sustain.
Can I write both in the same year?
Yes, if you meet the age and degree conditions for each and the dates do not clash. Check the TNPSC annual planner and the UPSC calendar for the year.
Does a Group 1 officer work only in Tamil Nadu?
Group 1 posts are state government posts under the Tamil Nadu government. UPSC services allot officers to cadres, including state cadres, but a particular state is not guaranteed.
