Assistant Section Officer vs Sub Registrar Grade II: Group 2 posts compared
On this page
Assistant Section Officer (ASO) and Sub Registrar Grade II are both Group II posts in the TNPSC Group 2 and 2A notification of 15 July 2025 (No. 11/2025). They share one exam, one syllabus and one rank list, so you do not choose between two papers. The 2025 notification prints Level 16 for the Assistant Section Officer post. What separates the posts is the work, the department, the minimum age and what your rank allows at counselling.

Group II and Group IIA share the prelims, but each has its own mains. These two posts are both on the Group II side, so the descriptive Paper II applies to both. Details of the stages are in the Group 2 exam pattern, and the Group 2 vs Group 2A guide explains how the two tracks differ.
What each job involves
An Assistant Section Officer works in an office hierarchy, in the Secretariat or a department. The work is on files: noting, drafting, examining proposals and moving papers up the chain. It is an administrative, desk-based role, and Secretariat Service posts are generally based in Chennai.
A Sub Registrar Grade II runs a sub-registrar office, where property and other documents are registered under the registration law. It is a public-facing post with legal and procedural work, in a district office. The Registration Department's service rules govern promotion, so look at those rather than relying on general descriptions.
These are general descriptions, not the notification's wording. The notification lists the posts and eligibility, not job content.
How choice works
All Group II posts are filled from the same ranking, so your Paper II marks decide which seats you can reach. Both posts need a degree. The notification states conditions post by post, and some Group 2 posts add a specific degree, so check each entry. A candidate at 18 or 19 can look at ASO but not Sub Registrar Grade II, which has a minimum age of 20.
Who should choose which
- ASO if you like administrative office work, are happy with a Chennai-based Secretariat posting, and want a post with a printed pay level you can check.
- Sub Registrar Grade II if you prefer a public-facing legal and documentation role in a district, and you are 20 or older.
- Either if your rank gives you both. Compare the pay levels and the promotion rules in the current notification before you rank your preferences.
Preparing for the shared exam
Study once, for the common syllabus. The prelims language part (General Tamil or General English, 100 questions) and the 75 General Studies questions both matter. Mains Paper II is descriptive and covers seven units, from modern history of India to Indian economy. Our Group 2 syllabus and mains preparation guide give the detail, and TNPSC salary by group places the pay levels in context.
PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows your weakest subjects for the prelims. Its objective mocks match the prelims pattern and can be taken in Tamil. Descriptive answer practice for Paper II is not part of PrepMatic.
