Village Administrative Officer (VAO) and Junior Assistant are both TNPSC Group 4 posts at pay Level 8, and both are filled from the same written paper. The Group 4 notification of 6 October 2026 (No. 11/2026) lists 291 VAO vacancies and 2,610 Junior Assistant (Non Security) vacancies. The real differences are the minimum age (21 for VAO, 18 for Junior Assistant), the maximum age for reserved categories, the kind of work, and how many seats your rank can reach.

What the two jobs involve

A VAO is the Revenue Department's village-level official, so the work centres on land and revenue records, certificates and field verification in the village. It is a public-facing post where you are known to the people you serve. The VAO guide covers the role in more detail.

A Junior Assistant is an office post in the Tamil Nadu Ministerial Service. The work is filing, drafting, record keeping and routine correspondence in a government office. Which department you land in depends on your rank and the vacancies at counselling. If you prefer a desk and a fixed office to a village posting, this is the post that fits.

One exam, one rank

You do not sit different papers for the two posts. Both come from the single Group 4 paper: Part A Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test (100 questions, 150 marks), Part B General Studies (75 questions) and Part C Aptitude and Mental Ability (25 questions), 300 marks in all. You need at least 90 out of 300, and you must score at least 60 out of 150 in Part A or Parts B and C are not evaluated. The Group 4 exam pattern explains each part.

Because rank decides which posts are open to you, the useful question is how to score, not which post to pick today. Seat counts are not cut-offs. There are roughly nine Junior Assistant seats for every VAO seat in this notification, but TNPSC does not publish a predicted closing rank and neither do we.

Who should choose which

  • Aim for VAO if you are 21 or older on the cut-off date, want village-level administrative work, and are comfortable with field duties.
  • Aim for Junior Assistant if you are 18 to 20 (VAO is closed to you), prefer office work, or want a post with many more vacancies.
  • Check your age carefully if you are a BC, MBC or SC/ST candidate with an HSC or a degree. For Junior Assistant there is no maximum age for you (below 60), but VAO stops at 40.
  • Keep both open if you are eligible for both. Prepare once, and let your rank and the counselling vacancies decide.

Preparing for the shared paper

The syllabus is the same for both posts, so a single plan works. Start from the Group 4 syllabus, put time into Part A first because of the 60-mark gate, and read the eligibility guide for the age relaxations. For the pay-level picture across groups see TNPSC salary by group. The notification prints pay levels, not rupee figures, for these posts.

PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows whether Tamil, General Studies or Aptitude is your weakest part. You can then take full-length Group 4 mocks that match the 200-question paper, or shorter mocks focused on your weak subjects, in Tamil if you choose it as your exam language.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a separate exam for VAO?

No. VAO is recruited through the Group 4 exam, the same single paper as Junior Assistant, Typist and the other Group 4 posts. Your rank in that paper decides which posts you can be considered for.

Do VAO and Junior Assistant have the same pay?

Both are listed at Level 8 of the Tamil Nadu pay matrix in the 2026 notification. Allowances and promotion routes depend on the service rules of the department, so check the notification and the service rules rather than assuming they match.

Can a 20-year-old apply for VAO?

No. The minimum age for VAO is 21 as on 1 July 2026. A 20-year-old can apply for Junior Assistant and most other Group 4 posts, where the minimum age is 18.
