Junior Assistant and Bill Collector are both Level 8 posts in the TNPSC Group 4 notification of 6 October 2026, and both are filled from the same written paper. The main difference is scale: 2,610 vacancies for Junior Assistant (Non Security), 28 for Junior Assistant (Security) and 59 for Bill Collector. Pay level does not separate them, so the choice comes down to the kind of work, the employer and where your rank lands.

The Junior Assistant is placed in the Tamil Nadu Ministerial Service. The notification gives the service for each post code, so read the entry for code 2500 to see the department a Bill Collector belongs to. Shortlisting ratios for certificate verification and counselling are given post by post in the notification; check the entry for your post rather than assuming they match.

What the work looks like

A Junior Assistant is an office post. Expect filing, drafting, noting, maintaining registers and dealing with correspondence in a government office, with the department decided by your rank and the vacancies at counselling.

A Bill Collector, as the title says, deals with collection of dues from the public. That makes it more of an outdoors, public-contact job than a desk post. The notification names the service for each post code, so use it rather than a general description.

The Security variant of Junior Assistant (code 2400) is a separate post with 28 vacancies. Read its entry before applying, because it is a distinct code.

How the numbers affect your chances

Bill Collector has 59 vacancies. Junior Assistant (Non Security) has about 44 times as many. A small post has fewer seats to go around, while a larger post gives you more room across departments and districts. Vacancies are tentative, and seat counts are not closing ranks: TNPSC does not publish a prediction and we do not guess one.

Your rank is what matters, and it comes from the single paper. Part A Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test is 100 questions for 150 marks, and you must score at least 60 for Parts B and C to be evaluated. The Group 4 exam pattern walks through each part.

Who should choose which

  • Junior Assistant if you prefer office work, want the largest intake, or want your options open across many departments.
  • Bill Collector if you are comfortable with fieldwork and dealing with the public, and the department named in the notification suits you.
  • Both if you are eligible. They share the same age rules, so you do not need to prepare any differently. Let your rank and the counselling vacancies decide.
  • Consider VAO if you are 21 or older and want a village-level administrative post at the same pay level. See VAO vs Junior Assistant.

Preparing once for both

The syllabus is the Group 4 syllabus, code 496: Tamil, six General Studies units and aptitude with reasoning. The Group 4 syllabus lists each unit, and the Group 4 study plan gives a route. For age relaxations and community rules, see TNPSC eligibility.

PrepMatic's free assessment of about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions shows your weakest subjects. Its Group 4 mocks follow the real 200-question paper, and you can choose Tamil as your exam language. The mocks can also be focused on your weak subjects, which suits the Part A gate.
