IBPS RRB PO vs IBPS PO: what changes between the two
On this page
IBPS RRB PO is the Officer Scale I (Assistant Manager) recruitment for Regional Rural Banks, and IBPS PO is the Probationary Officer and Management Trainee recruitment for public sector banks. Both are run by IBPS, both end with an interview weighted 20 per cent, and both have a prelims and mains. The RRB exam is shorter (an 80-mark prelims in 45 minutes against a 100-mark prelims in 60), starts at a lower age (18) and treats the local language of the state as an essential qualification.

IBPS RRB Officer Scale II and III use a single exam and an interview instead of a prelims and mains, so this table covers Scale I only.
Where the RRB exam is lighter
The RRB prelims has two tests, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude, and no English section. The PO prelims has three, including English. The RRB mains has five sections of 40 questions each, lists no descriptive paper, and gives Computer Knowledge 20 marks. The PO mains has no computer section, a heavier General Awareness section that includes digital and financial awareness and RBI circulars, and a descriptive paper. See the IBPS RRB guide and the IBPS PO pattern for the section-wise detail.
The language rule and the posting
IBPS PO is an all-India cadre: you can be posted anywhere in India. RRB Scale I is tied to a regional bank and its state language. For a Tamil Nadu post, that is Tamil. If you studied Tamil in Std VIII or later, your certificate serves as proof. If you did not, you have 6 months from joining to acquire it, and the notification does not describe a separate language test. Check the exact wording in the notification for the bank you apply to.
An RRB serves a region, which is why the local language is essential. Whether you stay near home depends on that bank's posting and transfer rules, which you should read before you apply. An IBPS PO, by contrast, is explicitly an all-India cadre.
Who should choose which
- Apply to both if you are 20 to 30 and a graduate. The preliminary skills are shared and the calendars differ by a few months, and you pay a separate fee for each.
- RRB PO if you are 18 or 19 (PO's minimum is 20), prefer working in your home state, and are at ease with the local language.
- IBPS PO if you want an all-India cadre, or a bigger public sector bank, and are ready for the descriptive paper.
- Check the pay in the RRB notification before you choose. This page quotes the PO scale (₹48,480 to ₹85,920 in the 2026 notification) and does not compare it with RRB scales.
Preparing for both
Practise Reasoning and Quant with sectional timing, since both prelims use sectional cut-offs. Add Computer Knowledge for the RRB mains, and data analysis, banking awareness and descriptive writing for the PO mains. The IBPS PO preparation strategy covers the PO side.
PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows your weakest subjects, and custom mocks can be focused on them. Descriptive answers for the PO exam are not evaluated on PrepMatic.
Frequently asked questions
Is IBPS RRB PO easier than IBPS PO?
The RRB exam has a shorter prelims, no English in the prelims and no descriptive paper in its mains table. The cut-offs and competition vary each year, so do not treat that as a guide to selection. Treat the pattern as the difference.
Do I need to know Tamil for the RRB PO exam?
For a Tamil Nadu regional rural bank, local language proficiency is an essential qualification. Studying Tamil in Std VIII or above is accepted as proof, and otherwise you get 6 months after joining to acquire it.
Can I apply for both in one year?
Yes. They are separate recruitments with separate applications and fees. The 2026 IBPS calendar placed PO in August and October and RRB Scale I in November and December.
