RBI Assistant vs IBPS Clerk: how the two exams compare
On this page
RBI Assistant and IBPS Clerk (officially the Customer Service Associate) both go from a 100-mark prelims to a 200-mark mains and then a language test, with no interview. The prelims shapes match. The difference is in the mains: RBI Assistant has five tests of 40 questions each, including Computer Knowledge, in 135 minutes, while IBPS CSA-XVI has four sections in 125 minutes with no computer section. RBI recruits office by office, and IBPS recruits state by state for public sector banks.

RBI sets each Mains test as a separately timed test: Reasoning 30 minutes, English 30, Numerical Ability 30, General Awareness 25 and Computer Knowledge 20.
The mains: what changes in your preparation
RBI gives equal weight to each of five subjects, 40 marks each. A weak subject is costly in a way that IBPS's weights hide: IBPS gives Reasoning 60 marks and Quant and General Awareness 50 each, English 40. So the IBPS paper rewards Reasoning more, and RBI's rewards even coverage. Computer Knowledge is a full 40 marks in RBI. In IBPS CSA-XVI there is no such section, so if you prepare computer awareness only for RBI, it will not help IBPS mains. Read the IBPS Clerk pattern and the RBI Assistant guide.
Office-wise versus state-wise
An RBI Assistant applies to a regional office. For Tamil Nadu and Puducherry that is the Chennai office, and RBI states cut-offs office-wise and category-wise. In IBPS, you apply for vacancies in one State or UT and the vacancies are in the participating public sector banks in that state. In both, you need working proficiency in the local language, which for a Tamil Nadu post is Tamil, and both have a language test. IBPS waives its LLPT if your Class 10 or higher mark sheet shows you studied the language, and RBI's rules for its LPT are in its advertisement.
Practice material
Neither RBI nor IBPS publishes past question papers. RBI's own result notice says its exam body does not provide papers to RBI, and IBPS treats reproducing test content as unfair means. Papers sold as "previous year" are memory-based, so use them for practice, not as official sources.
Who should choose which
- RBI Assistant if you want a central bank job in a regional office, are comfortable with a five-subject mains of equal weights, and have Computer Knowledge covered.
- IBPS Clerk if you want to spread your chance across 11 banks in your state, prefer a shorter mains, and are stronger in Reasoning.
- Both, since they come at different times in the year and the prelims skills transfer almost fully. Mind the eligibility details in each advertisement before you apply.
Preparing for both
Practise the three prelims sections with a clock on each, then add a daily computer-awareness block if you target RBI. The IBPS Clerk preparation strategy gives a routine. PrepMatic's free assessment, about 15 untimed multiple-choice questions, shows your weakest subjects, and its mocks can be focused on them. See also IBPS Clerk vs SBI Clerk.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an interview for RBI Assistant?
No. The stages are Prelims, Mains and a Language Proficiency Test. IBPS Clerk also has no interview and selection is on Mains marks.
Does RBI Assistant have a computer section?
Yes. The Mains has a Computer Knowledge test of 40 questions and 40 marks. IBPS CSA-XVI mains does not have one.
Where can I find previous papers?
Not from the official bodies. RBI's exam body does not give papers to RBI, and IBPS does not publish them. Use memory-based papers for practice and rely on the information handouts for sample questions.
