RBI Grade B is an officer post in the Reserve Bank of India, recruited by the RBI Services Board, and SBI PO is a Probationary Officer post in the country's largest commercial bank. The 2026 advertisements show the main differences. RBI asks for graduation with at least 60 per cent (or postgraduation with 55 per cent), starts at a basic pay of ₹78,450, and has a Phase II of three papers with typed descriptive answers. SBI PO accepts graduates in any discipline and starts at ₹48,480 plus four advance increments. Both end in an interview-based stage.

What Phase II asks of you

RBI Phase II is the heart of the exam. Paper I (Economic and Social Issues) and Paper III (Finance and Management) are each half objective (30 questions, 50 marks) and half descriptive (four answers out of six, 50 marks, typed), for 100 marks each. Paper II is English Writing, 100 marks, typed. All three are compulsory. If you write more than four descriptive answers, only the first four are evaluated.

SBI PO's Mains is lighter on descriptive: 170 objective questions in three hours, then Communication Skills (an email, a situation analysis, and a report or precis) in 30 minutes, typed. So an RBI aspirant needs economics, finance and management reading that an SBI aspirant can skip. Our RBI Grade B guide lists the Phase II topics, and the SBI PO pattern lists the SBI sections.

The calendar has moved

RBI moved Grade B to a spring and summer cycle in 2026, with Phase I on 13 June 2026 and Phase II on 25 July 2026, after a late-year cycle the previous panel year. SBI PO's 2026 advertisement scheduled Prelims for August, Mains for September, and Phase III for October and November. Calendars shift, so use each body's current notice.

Who should choose which

  • RBI Grade B if you have the marks (60% in graduation or 55% in postgraduation), enjoy economics and finance, and are ready for typed descriptive papers.
  • SBI PO if you do not meet RBI's percentage rule, are a final-year student, or want a more conventional bank PO route.
  • Both, because the preparation overlaps in Quant, Reasoning, English and Banking Awareness, and the two are on different calendars. Count your attempts, though: RBI counts every Phase I appearance, and SBI counts Mains appearances.
  • Minimum age is 21 for both, so a 20-year-old cannot apply to either.

SBI also removed a CIBIL clause from its 2026 advertisement by a corrigendum dated 1 July 2026, so a clean credit record is not an SBI PO 2026 requirement.

Preparing for both

Build the common base first (Quant, Reasoning, English, current affairs and banking), then decide whether to add the RBI Phase II layer. The bank exam eligibility guide lists the rules in one place, and bank PO interview preparation covers the last stage. See also IBPS PO vs SBI PO.

PrepMatic's bank-exam practice is objective, and its free assessment of about 15 untimed questions shows your weakest subjects. Custom mocks let you choose subjects, number of questions, duration and difficulty. PrepMatic has no descriptive answer evaluation, so RBI Phase II writing needs another route.

Frequently asked questions

Is RBI Grade B harder than SBI PO?

They test different things. RBI Phase II adds economics, finance, management and typed descriptive writing, and sets a minimum percentage in graduation. SBI PO focuses on the objective sections and has a group round. Judge by your strengths and eligibility.

Do first-stage marks count in either exam?

No. RBI's final merit is Phase II plus the Interview, and SBI PO's is Mains plus the Group Exercise and Interview. Prelims or Phase I only shortlist.

How many attempts do I get?

RBI General and EWS candidates are not eligible after six appearances in Phase I. For SBI PO, UR and EWS have 6 chances and OBC and PwBD have 9, counted by Mains appearances. SC and ST have no limit in either.
