Nationalised bank vs regional rural bank jobs: how the exams differ
On this page
Public sector (nationalised) bank jobs come through IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk (Customer Service Associate) and SBI's own recruitments, while Regional Rural Bank (Gramin bank) jobs come through a separate IBPS RRB exam. The RRB route opens at a younger age (18 for Office Assistant and Officer Scale I), has a shorter prelims and ties you to a state's language. The public sector route is all-India for officers, with a pay scale printed in the notification. Both recruit officers and clerks, and you can apply to both.

Candidates can apply for Office Assistant and one officer post in the RRB exam, with a separate application and fee for each. In the 2026 IBPS calendar the clerk and PO exams for public sector banks fall between August and December, and the RRB exams between November 2026 and January 2027.
The practical differences
Age window. If you are 18 or 19, only the RRB route is open: public sector PO needs 20 and the clerical post 20 as well. If you are 29 or 30, the officer posts in both are still open before category relaxations, but the clerical age limit of 28 in both has passed.
Language and place. An RRB serves a region, and the local language is part of the qualification. A Tamil Nadu RRB needs Tamil, and you get 6 months after joining to acquire it if you did not study it. In public sector banks, a clerk is recruited state by state, and a PO can be posted anywhere in India. So the RRB route suits someone who wants to work in their own region; the PO route suits someone prepared to move.
Exam load. The RRB prelims has 80 questions across Reasoning and Quant. The public sector prelims has English as well, and the PO mains adds a descriptive paper. The RRB mains has Computer Knowledge, and the public sector clerk mains has none. See the PO vs RRB PO comparison for the officer-level detail, and the IBPS RRB guide for all RRB posts.
Pay. The public sector scales are printed in the 2026 notifications (PO from ₹48,480, clerk from ₹24,050). The RRB scale is in the RRB notification, which this page does not quote.
Who should choose which
- RRB if you are 18 or 19, want to stay in your state, or want a shorter prelims.
- Public sector bank if you want an all-India officer cadre, are 20 or older and are ready for the English section and the descriptive paper (PO).
- Both, since the skills overlap heavily and you can apply to several in the year. The bank exams list shows every recruitment, and bank PO vs clerk helps you choose the post level.

Frequently asked questions
Is an RRB job a government bank job?
Regional Rural Banks were set up under the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976, and are owned jointly by the Government of India, the state government and a sponsor bank. Their staff are recruited through the IBPS RRB exam. Read the notification for pay and service conditions.
Can I apply to RRBs and public sector banks in the same year?
Yes. They are separate recruitments with separate applications and fees. In the 2026 IBPS calendar they fall in different months, so the exam dates do not clash.
Which exam has the lower age limit?
IBPS RRB. Office Assistant and Scale I start at 18. IBPS PO starts at 20 and IBPS Clerk at 20.
