IBPS has renamed the clerical post: the 2026 recruitment (CRP CSA-XVI) is for Customer Service Associate (CSA), the cadre most people still search for as "IBPS Clerk". The detailed notification is dated 1 August 2026, and registration ran from 1 to 21 August 2026. Selection is state-wise: you apply for one State or Union Territory, take a prelims and a mains, and, if the language rule applies to you, a Local Language Proficiency Test. There is no interview, and final merit is decided on mains marks alone.

The dates for prelims and mains come from the notification's month-level schedule and IBPS's tentative calendar, which IBPS can change. Vacancies were updated by a corrigendum dated 29 September 2026, so check that document for the current state-wise numbers instead of a figure quoted on a website.

State-wise selection: choose your state carefully

You can apply for vacancies in one State or Union Territory only. The exam is conducted in English, Hindi and a regional language of the state you choose (the English section is in English only). For Tamil Nadu the question languages are English, Hindi and Tamil; for Puducherry they are English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. Your choice of state also decides which language you must be proficient in, which brings us to the language test.

Age20 to 28 years as on 1 August 2026 (born 2 August 1998 to 1 August 2006)

AttemptsThe notification does not set a limit

Upper-age relaxations: SC/ST 5 years, OBC (non-creamy layer) 3 years, PwBD 10 years. Ex-servicemen and disabled ex-servicemen get their service plus 3 years (8 years for disabled ex-servicemen of SC/ST), up to a maximum age of 50. Widows, divorced women and women judicially separated and not remarried can apply up to 35 (General/EWS), 38 (OBC) and 40 (SC/ST). An ex-serviceman without a degree may be eligible as a matriculate holding the Army Special Certificate of Education (or the Navy or Air Force equivalent) after 15 years' service.

The general bank-exam rules, including how the clerical limits differ from PO, are summarised in the bank exam eligibility guide.

The Local Language Proficiency Test

You must be proficient in reading, writing, speaking and understanding the official language of the State or UT you apply for. You are exempt from the test if your Class 10 or higher mark sheet shows you studied that language. For a Tamil Nadu applicant who did Class 10 in Tamil, that settles it. If your mark sheet does not show that you studied Tamil, you are expected to take the test.

The test is held after the mains and provisional allotment, but before you join. It is marks-based and qualifying: failing it means you are not appointed.

Pattern for the 2026 cycle

StageSections (questions / marks)Total
PrelimsEnglish 30 / 30, Numerical Ability 35 / 35, Reasoning 35 / 35, each timed at 20 minutes100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes
MainsGeneral/Financial Awareness 40 / 50 (20 min), English 40 / 40 (35 min), Reasoning 40 / 60 (35 min), Quantitative Aptitude 40 / 50 (35 min)160 questions, 200 marks, 125 minutes

Both stages have sectional timing, and the notification prescribes a sectional minimum as well as an overall one. Wrong answers lose 0.25 of the marks for that question in both stages.

The most common mistake is trusting older material. The earlier clerical mains had 190 questions in 160 minutes with a combined "Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude" section. The 2026 mains has no separate computer section. Which year the change began is not something we have verified, so go by the current notification. The topics inside each section are covered on the IBPS Clerk syllabus and exam pattern page.

Pay

The basic pay scale in the notification is ₹24,050-1340/3-28,070-1650/3-33,020-2000/4-41,020-2340/7-57,400-4400/1-61,800-2680/1-64,480. Allowances depend on the bank and location, so this page does not quote a take-home figure.

How selection works after the exam

Prelims is a screening round. Mains marks decide the final merit, so prelims marks are not added. After mains, shortlisted candidates take the language test if they need it, and then banks are allotted state-wise on provisional allotment. How bank exam results work explains what each IBPS result tells you.

How applying works

  1. Read the detailed notification on the IBPS clerical cadre page and choose your State or UT.
  2. Register online using the application link in the notification.
  3. Upload the documents and images listed there, in the specified sizes.
  4. Pay the fee online and keep the confirmation.

If the cycle you want has closed, as this one has, the same steps apply to the next notification. Your preparation should not wait for it: the IBPS Clerk preparation strategy shows how to build speed for the sectional timers. If you are choosing between clerical and officer exams, PO vs clerk helps, and the bank exams hub lists every exam. SBI's clerical recruitment is separate: see the SBI Clerk notification.

Getting ready with PrepMatic

For a speed-driven exam like this one, the first job is finding which of English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning is slowing you down. PrepMatic's free assessment (about 15 questions, no timer) shows your weakest subjects and a readiness percentage. Your plan then follows your exam date and daily hours, and you can build custom mocks by choosing the subject, number of questions, duration and difficulty, or focus a mock on the weak subjects. Results show your score with negative marking and the subject that cost you most.

Frequently asked questions

Is IBPS Clerk the same as Customer Service Associate?

Yes. IBPS now uses the name Customer Service Associate (CSA) for the clerical cadre. The exam is the one people used to call IBPS Clerk.

Is there an interview for IBPS Clerk 2026?

No. The stages are prelims, mains and, if required, the language test. Final merit is based on mains marks only.

Can I apply in more than one state?

No. You choose one State or UT at registration and the vacancies you compete for are in that state.

Do Tamil Nadu candidates need to pass a Tamil test?

Only if your Class 10 or higher mark sheet does not show that you studied Tamil. If it does, you are exempt from the Local Language Proficiency Test.

Is there a computer section in the mains?

Not in the 2026 notification. Computer literacy is a mandatory eligibility condition, but the mains has four sections: General/Financial Awareness, English, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude.
