A bank exam result is not one announcement but a chain: a prelims result that only shortlists you, a mains result that shortlists you again, and a final result that ranks you. Which marks count in the final merit is different for IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO, SBI Clerk and RBI Grade B, and misunderstanding it is the most common reason aspirants misread their position. This guide explains each chain from the 2026 notifications. It does not quote any cut-off marks, because cut-offs are decided after the exam and change every cycle.

Reading a result: four terms

  • Sectional cut-off. A minimum score in each test. If you fall below it in any one section, a high total does not rescue you. IBPS prelims and RBI Grade B Phase I use sectional cut-offs. SBI PO and SBI Clerk prelims have none.
  • Overall (aggregate) cut-off. The minimum total, or the total of the last shortlisted candidate. The recruiter decides it after the exam.
  • Shortlisting ratio. The number of candidates called to the next stage per vacancy. SBI states these ratios in its advertisements.
  • Normalisation. When a paper runs in several sessions, marks are adjusted so that an easier or harder session does not decide your result. IBPS PO mains uses the equi-percentile method.

Stage-by-stage results by exam

ExamPrelims resultMains resultFinal merit

IBPS Clerk (CSA)Qualifying only, with sectional cut-offSectional and total minimumMains marks only. No interview
IBPS RRB Office AssistantQualifying, sectional cut-off in both testsMerit on mainsMains marks only. No interview
IBPS RRB Scale IQualifying, sectional cut-offMainsMains and Interview in the ratio 80 : 20
SBI POAbout ten times the vacancies, category-wise, on the aggregate. No sectional cut-offSectional qualifying score in each test including the descriptive; about three times the vacancies go to Phase IIIMains normalised to 75, plus group exercise and interview normalised to 25
SBI Clerk (Junior Associate)About ten times the vacancies, with no minimum marksA minimum aggregate percentage, with no sectional minimumMains aggregate. No interview
RBI Grade BSectional minimum plus aggregate cut-offPhase II marks, with the shortlisting rule stated in the advertisementPhase II plus Interview. Phase I marks are not counted

Two points to underline. First, prelims marks are not added into the final merit for IBPS PO, SBI PO or RBI Grade B, so a topper in prelims starts from zero in the mains race. Second, the interview weightage is not the same: 20% for IBPS officers, 25% for SBI PO (the group exercise and interview together), and RBI Grade B adds a 75-mark interview to a 300-mark Phase II.

Interview and personality stages

For IBPS PO and officer posts, the interview is for 100 marks and you need at least 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD). IBPS PO also holds a Personality Test, a self-report placed before the interview panel. It carries no marks, but you must attend. SBI PO's Phase III has a psychometric test, a group exercise for 20 marks and an interview for 30 marks, and you must qualify Phase II and Phase III separately. The RBI Grade B Personality Assessment carries no marks, and the interview is for 75 marks. For tie-breaks in IBPS PO, the older candidate ranks higher. Our interview preparation guide covers what the panel asks.

Language tests and clerk results

For IBPS Clerk and SBI Junior Associate, the language test (LLPT) happens after the mains and provisional allotment, and before you join. It is qualifying, and failing it means no appointment. For IBPS RRB Office Assistant and Scale I, the local language is an essential qualification and the notification gives a candidate who lacks it 6 months from joining to acquire it. RBI Assistant has a Language Proficiency Test after mains. Bank exam eligibility shows who is exempt from which test.

Provisional allotment, reserve lists and wait lists

After the final merit, banks are allotted on a provisional allotment list.

  • IBPS PO: the notification lists provisional allotment for January 2027. The reserve list is about 20% of the vacancies and is valid for one year from the date of provisional allotment.
  • IBPS Clerk (CSA): provisional allotment is scheduled for March 2027, state-wise.
  • SBI Junior Associate: a wait list of up to 50% of the vacancies, state- and category-wise, is valid for one year.

You cannot treat a reserve or wait list as a promise. It is used only if selected candidates do not join.

RBI Assistant: what RBI publishes

RBI published the Panel Year 2025 Assistant prelims result notice and a cut-off table. RBI applies prelims cut-offs on the total, office-wise and category-wise. For example, the Chennai office, which covers Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, has its own cut-off for each category, and the table is the only place to see it. We do not reproduce the numbers because a past figure is not guidance for any future cycle.

How to check and use your result

  1. Go to the official site for your exam. For IBPS this is the CRP page, for SBI the current-openings page, and for RBI the Opportunities website (opportunities.rbi.org.in).
  2. Open the result notice or link for your stage and log in with the details you used at registration.
  3. Save the PDF and a screenshot as soon as your marks appear, because you will need your marks for the next stage and for any query.
  4. Read the cut-off or shortlisting notice if one is published, and see how your section marks compare.

A result is the starting point for the next call letter. The bank exam admit card guide covers that step. Per-exam details are in the IBPS PO, SBI PO, IBPS Clerk and RBI Grade B notification pages. We cannot say whether a given 2026 result has been released: look at the official site.

Using your marks with PrepMatic

A result tells you your total, but not which habits lost the marks. PrepMatic mocks give a score with negative marking, a subject-wise breakdown and the subject that cost you the most marks, plus a predicted score and readiness that update as you take more tests. After a mains, retake your weakest subject as a custom mock (choose the subject, number of questions, duration and difficulty), and use the study plan to put that subject first. See the bank exam mock test strategy for the cadence, and the bank exams hub for every exam.

Frequently asked questions

Do prelims marks count in the final selection?

Not for IBPS PO, SBI PO or RBI Grade B, where prelims or Phase I only decides who moves to the next stage. For IBPS Clerk and SBI Junior Associate too, final merit rests on mains marks.

What is the difference between a sectional and an overall cut-off?

A sectional cut-off is the minimum you must clear in each test; the overall cut-off is the minimum total. IBPS prelims uses both, while SBI PO and SBI Clerk prelims have no sectional cut-off.

What is normalisation of marks?

When an exam runs in more than one session, the marks are adjusted so that the difficulty of your session does not decide your result. IBPS PO mains uses the equi-percentile method.

What is a reserve list?

A list of candidates kept ready in case selected candidates do not join. IBPS PO's reserve list is about 20% of vacancies and is valid for one year from provisional allotment.

Where can I see cut-off marks for my exam?

On the recruiter's official site, if it publishes them, as RBI did for the Assistant prelims. We do not quote past cut-offs here, because each cycle sets its own.
