What is added to basic pay

Dearness allowance is added on basic pay, and house rent allowance and any city compensatory allowance depend on the place of posting. The notification's CPS marker means a monthly pension contribution comes off pay, together with professional tax and income tax. Annual increments move pay one cell down Level 18 on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October, by your date of joining.

What an Assistant Inspector of Labour does

The notification does not list duties. In the Labour Department, inspection staff check that establishments follow labour laws, such as those on wages, working conditions and child labour, and help in settling disputes between workers and employers. The role involves field inspections of shops, factories and other workplaces.

Promotion

The Labour Subordinate Service has higher inspector and officer grades above the assistant grade, with promotion by seniority, departmental tests and service rules. Each promotion carries a higher level. Higher in the department, the Assistant Commissioner of Labour is a Group 1 post at Level 22.

Qualification

A degree from any University recognised by the University Grants Commission. Other things being equal, preference goes to candidates with one of the labour and social work qualifications listed in the notification, such as an M.A. in Social Work, a diploma from the Madras School of Social Work, a Postgraduate Diploma in Labour Administration from the Tamil Nadu Institute of Labour Studies, or release from commissioned service in the armed forces as listed there. Read the full list in para 4.2.1 of the notification.

How to get the post

Through Group 2: a common prelims for screening, then a Mains with a qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test and a descriptive General Studies paper of 300 marks. Rank is on the General Studies paper, with no interview in the 2025 scheme. See the Group 2 exam pattern and the Group 2 syllabus.
