Assistant Director of Rural Development (ADRD) is at Level 22 of the Tamil Nadu pay matrix in the 2025 TNPSC Group 1 notification (No. 04/2025). Level 22 runs from ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500 a month in basic pay, and a direct recruit starts at ₹56,100. The notification listed 7 ADRD vacancies out of 70. The pay level is the same as a Deputy Collector, so the choice between Group 1 posts is about the work, not the basic pay band.

The notification prints "Level 22" only. The range is from Schedule-I of G.O. Ms. No. 303 (11 October 2017), summarised on the salary hub. Level 22 is almost three times the start of a Group 4 post.

What is added to basic pay

Dearness allowance is added on basic pay, and house rent allowance and any city compensatory allowance follow the place of posting. Deductions include professional tax, income tax and the retirement-scheme contribution. Annual increments move pay one cell down Level 22 on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October, set by your joining date.

What the post involves

The notification does not list duties. The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department runs government schemes for villages and works with village panchayats. An Assistant Director generally supervises implementation of these schemes at district level: reviewing progress, inspecting works, guiding block-level officers and checking accounts and records.

Promotion

Promotion runs through the department's higher director and officer grades under service rules and seniority, with each step carrying a higher pay level. Annual increments raise pay in between.

How to get the post

  • Qualification: a degree, with post-specific conditions in para 4.2 of the notification.
  • Prelims: a screening paper of 200 questions for 300 marks (General Studies 175, Aptitude 25).
  • Mains: a qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test and three General Studies papers of 250 marks each.
  • Interview: 100 marks, so the final rank is on 850 marks.
