Steno-Typist Grade III in the Tamil Nadu Ministerial Service is at Level 10 of the pay matrix in the 2026 TNPSC Group 4 notification (No. 11/2026). Level 10 runs from ₹20,600 to ₹65,500 a month in basic pay, and a direct recruit starts at ₹20,600, which is ₹1,100 above the Level 8 start of a Junior Assistant. The notification lists 209 Ministerial Service vacancies (including backlog), a tentative count.

Pay level by organisation

Level 10 is not printed against every Steno-Typist or shorthand post. Read the row for your post code.

The rupee range is from Schedule-I of G.O. Ms. No. 303 (11 October 2017), summarised on the salary hub. The notification prints only the level.

What is added to basic pay

Dearness allowance is added on basic pay, and house rent allowance and any city compensatory allowance follow the place of posting. Steno-Typists often work in head offices and collectorates in larger towns, which affects the allowance slab. Professional tax, income tax and the pension or insurance contributions are deducted. Annual increments move you one cell down Level 10 on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October, depending on your joining date.

Qualification

The main Ministerial Service post asks for three things:

  • a pass in SSLC;
  • the Government Technical Examination in both Typewriting and Shorthand, in Higher or Senior Grade for Tamil and English, or Higher or Senior in Tamil with Lower or Junior in English, or the reverse;
  • the Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation, which may be acquired within probation or two years of appointment if you do not hold it yet.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority row asks for a degree. Age as on 1 July 2026 is 18 to 30 for Others, with higher limits for reserved categories.

What the job involves

A Steno-Typist takes dictation in shorthand from an officer, transcribes it as typed letters, orders and notes in Tamil or English, and keeps the officer's confidential papers, diary and files. The notification does not list duties; this is the usual scope.

Promotion

Stenographers have their own ladder within the department: higher steno grades and Personal Assistant posts to senior officers, governed by service rules, seniority and departmental tests. Each step moves you to a higher level. Pay rises in between through the annual increment.

How to get the post

Through the Group 4 exam: one paper, 200 questions, 300 marks, no interview. See the Group 4 exam pattern and the eligibility guide. Hold your typewriting and shorthand certificates before the notification date.

Frequently asked questions

What is the starting basic pay of a Steno-Typist Grade III?

₹20,600 a month at Level 10 for the Ministerial Service post. Allowances are added and deductions taken off to arrive at take-home pay.

Why is the Waqf Board Steno-Typist at Level 8?

The 2026 notification prints Level 8 against that organisation's Steno Typist post (code 3847), while the other Grade III rows show Level 10. Always read the row for your own post code.

Is Steno-Typist better paid than Typist?

On basic pay, yes: the Ministerial Service Steno-Typist is at Level 10 and the Typist is at Level 8.
