Most Junior Assistant posts in the 2026 TNPSC Group 4 notification (No. 11/2026) are at Level 8 of the Tamil Nadu pay matrix, which runs from ₹19,500 to ₹62,000 a month in basic pay. A direct recruit starts at ₹19,500. It is the largest single block of vacancies in Group 4: the notification lists 2,610 Junior Assistant (Non Security) posts in the Tamil Nadu Ministerial Service alone, a tentative figure.

Pay of each Junior Assistant post

"Junior Assistant" is not one job. The notification lists it under many services and organisations, and the pay is printed per row.

Junior Assistant post (post code)Pay as printed
Tamil Nadu Ministerial Service, Non Security (2600) and Security (2400)Level 8
Tamil Nadu Judicial Ministerial Service (4600)Level 8
Municipal Council Service (3842), Municipal Corporation Service (3840), Greater Chennai Corporation (3851)Level 8
Corporations such as Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (3512) and Police Housing Corporation (3816)Level 8, EPF
Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation, Junior Assistant (Accounts) (3848)Level 3 with the range ₹19,500 to ₹62,000 printed
Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers Co-operative Societies (3788)₹17,000 to ₹54,060 printed

The last two rows carry their own printed ranges, so read them as those organisations' scales rather than the state matrix. For the state posts, the Level 8 range comes from Schedule-I of G.O. Ms. No. 303 (11 October 2017), summarised on the salary hub. "EPF" in the notification marks a provident fund arrangement.

What is added to basic pay

Dearness allowance is added as a percentage of basic pay, and house rent allowance and any city compensatory allowance depend on where you are posted. A Junior Assistant in a Chennai office and one in a taluk office therefore start with the same basic pay but a different gross figure. Professional tax, income tax and pension or insurance contributions are deducted. Government posts get annual increments on one of four dates (1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October) fixed by the date you join.

What the job involves

The notification does not list duties. A Junior Assistant in the ministerial service is the entry-level office clerk: receiving and registering letters, maintaining files and registers, drafting simple notes and replies, entering data, and helping with bills and accounts work in the section. Corporation and municipal posts have the same character, tied to that body's work.

Promotion

Junior Assistants move up the ministerial cadre of their department, typically to Assistant and then Superintendent grades, on seniority and the department's service rules. Each promotion carries you to a higher pay level, and departmental tests may apply.

How to get the post

The Group 4 exam fills these posts. The 2026 minimum qualification for ministerial Junior Assistant is a pass in SSLC, but some corporation posts ask for a degree, B.Com or other qualifications, so read the row for your post code. The age limit as on 1 July 2026 is 18 to 30 for the Others category and 32 to 35 for reserved categories (with no upper limit for reserved candidates holding a higher qualification, as the age table explains). There is no interview. See the Group 4 exam pattern and syllabus for the paper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the starting salary of a Junior Assistant in TNPSC Group 4?

The starting basic pay is ₹19,500 for state ministerial posts at Level 8. Gross pay is higher once dearness and house rent allowances are added, and take-home pay is lower after deductions.

Do all Junior Assistant posts have the same salary?

No. Most are at Level 8, but the 2026 notification prints a different range for the Power Distribution Corporation post and the Handloom Weavers post. Check the post code row.

How is this different from Assistant in Group 2A?

Group 2A recruits Assistants at Level 9 or Level 10 and asks for a degree. They sit a step above Junior Assistants in pay level; see the Assistant (Group 2A) salary page.
