TNPSC Forest Watcher salary: Level 3 pay and requirements

Forest Watcher (post code 3319) in the Tamil Nadu Forest Subordinate Service is at Level 3 of the pay matrix in the 2026 TNPSC Group 4 notification (No. 11/2026). Level 3 runs from ₹16,600 to ₹52,400 a month in basic pay, and a direct recruit starts at ₹16,600. That is the lowest level in the notification, and the post also has physical standards and an endurance test that the clerical posts do not. The notification lists 40 vacancies, including those reserved for outstanding sportspersons, a tentative count.

Pay level and basic pay

The notification prints "Level 3" only. The range comes from Schedule-I of G.O. Ms. No. 303 (11 October 2017), summarised on the salary hub. The Forest Guard with Driving Licence post in the same notification is two levels higher at Level 5.

What is added to basic pay

Dearness allowance is added on basic pay, and house rent allowance depends on the place of posting. Deductions include professional tax, income tax and the retirement-scheme contribution your post carries. Annual increments fall on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October according to your joining date. Check the Forest Department's orders for any allowance specific to field duty.

What a Forest Watcher does

The notification does not list duties. A Forest Watcher is the entry-level field post of the Forest Department: patrolling an assigned beat on foot, watching for illegal felling, poaching and encroachment, helping control forest fires, and assisting forest guards and foresters with plantation, nursery and wildlife work. The work is outdoors and physically demanding.

Promotion

The Forest Subordinate Service has a ladder that runs from watcher to forest guard and on to forester and higher posts. Promotion follows the department's service rules, seniority and any tests, and each step moves you to a higher level.

Physical standards and the endurance test

Only candidates who meet the minimum physical standards may apply.

After on-screen certificate verification, eligible candidates attend the Physical Standards Test and Endurance Test at Chennai only: a walk of 25 km for men and 16 km for women and third gender candidates, to be completed in four hours. Persons with benchmark disabilities are not eligible. Age as on 1 July 2026 is 21 to 30 for Others, with higher limits for reserved categories.
