Assistant posts in Group 2A are at Level 10 of the Tamil Nadu pay matrix in the 2025 TNPSC Group 2 and 2A notification (No. 11/2025). Level 10 runs from ₹20,600 to ₹65,500 a month in basic pay, and a direct recruit starts at ₹20,600. The same level covers Senior Revenue Inspector, Executive Officer Grade III and several other Group 2A posts. The notification marks them "CPS", meaning the Contributory Pension Scheme.

Level 10 is also the level of Steno-Typist Grade III in Group 4, but those posts need only SSLC and a typing and shorthand certificate, while Group 2A posts need a degree.

Where the Assistants work

The 2025 notification lists Assistant posts in more than twenty departments, including Commercial Taxes, School Education, Medical and Rural Health Services, Police, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Labour, Public Health, Industries and Commerce, Transport, Registration, Civil Supplies, Highways, Prisons and the State Election Commission. The largest counts in 2025 were School Education (109), Medical and Rural Health Services (74), Animal Husbandry (43), Police (41) and Labour (33), after sportsperson reservations and including shortfall vacancies where marked. Vacancy numbers differ every cycle.

What is added to basic pay

Dearness allowance is added to basic pay and house rent allowance follows the place of posting, so an Assistant at a district office and one at a head office in Chennai start from the same basic but different gross pay. The notification's CPS marker means a contribution to the pension scheme comes off your pay each month, along with professional tax and income tax. Annual increments move you one cell down Level 10 on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October.

What an Assistant does

The notification does not list duties. In the ministerial service an Assistant handles files in a section: noting and drafting, processing proposals, bills and accounts, correspondence with field offices and the public, and keeping records. It is a step above a Junior Assistant in both pay and responsibility.

Promotion

Assistants move up their department's ministerial ladder, typically to Superintendent and then to administrative and section-head posts, under service rules and seniority. Each promotion brings a higher level.

How to get the post

Group 2A runs in stages: a common prelims (screening only), then a Mains with a qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test and a computer-based objective Paper II of 200 questions for 300 marks, where rank is decided by Paper II. There is no interview in the 2025 scheme. See the Group 2 and 2A comparison, the Group 2 syllabus and the Group 2 exam pattern.
