The Typist post in the 2026 TNPSC Group 4 notification (No. 11/2026) is at Level 8 of the Tamil Nadu pay matrix, with basic pay running from ₹19,500 to ₹62,000 a month. A direct recruit starts at ₹19,500, the same as a Junior Assistant. The Tamil Nadu Ministerial Service, Legislative Assembly Secretariat Service and Secretariat Service Typist post (code 2200) lists 856 vacancies, including backlog vacancies, a tentative count.

Pay level and the posts it covers

Typist post (post code)VacanciesPay as printed

Judicial Ministerial Service (4200)377 (incl. backlog)Level 8
Municipal Council Service (3844)260Level 8

Small Industries Development Corporation (3834), Waqf Board (3846), Police Housing Corporation (3817)15, 6 and 2Level 8 (EPF where marked)

The Level 8 range of ₹19,500 to ₹62,000 comes from Schedule-I of G.O. Ms. No. 303 (11 October 2017), shown on the salary hub. The notification itself prints only "Level 8". Vacancies are tentative and may change before counselling.

What is added to basic pay

Dearness allowance, calculated on basic pay, is added to the figure above. House rent allowance and city compensatory allowance depend on the place of posting, so a Typist in the Chennai secretariat and one in a district office draw different gross pay from the same basic. Deductions follow: professional tax, income tax and the contributions your post carries. The annual increment is one cell down Level 8, due on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July or 1 October depending on when you join.

Qualification: the extra requirements

This is the Group 4 post with the most specific skill requirements. For the main Typist post the notification asks for:

  • a pass in SSLC;
  • the Government Technical Examination in Typewriting in one of three combinations: Higher or Senior Grade in both Tamil and English, Higher or Senior in Tamil with Lower or Junior in English, or Higher or Senior in English with Lower or Junior in Tamil;
  • the Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation from the Directorate of Technical Education. If you do not hold it, you may still apply and must acquire it within probation or two years of appointment.

Some corporation and municipal rows differ (for example Senior Grade in both languages for the Municipal Council post), so read the row for your post code. The age limit as on 1 July 2026 is 18 to 30 for Others, with higher limits for reserved categories.

What the job involves

A Typist produces the office's typed output: letters, orders, notes, statements and registers in Tamil and English, and increasingly word-processed work on a computer. Accuracy and speed are the whole job. The notification does not list duties, so this is the usual scope of the cadre.

Promotion

Typists belong to the same ministerial service as Junior Assistants. Promotion to higher ministerial posts follows each department's service rules, seniority and departmental tests, and moves you to a higher level.

How to get the post

Typist is filled through the Group 4 exam, one paper of 200 questions for 300 marks with no interview. Your typewriting certificate must be held by the notification date. See the Group 4 syllabus and eligibility guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Typist earn less than a Steno-Typist?

The Steno-Typist Grade III post in the Ministerial Service is at Level 10, two levels higher. See the Steno-Typist salary page.
