RBI Assistant salary: what to check and how selection works
On this page
The pay of an RBI Assistant is set out in the pay clause of each recruitment advertisement, so the rupee figure that applies to you is the one in the advertisement for your cycle. This page does not print a rupee amount: RBI revises its scales between recruitments, so use only the figure in the advertisement for your cycle. What it can give you is the structure of the recruitment: how pay is stated, where you would be posted and how selection works.
What to check in the advertisement's pay clause
RBI advertisements state pay in a clause of their own. The Panel Year 2026 Grade B advertisement, for example, prints a starting basic pay, the full scale, an approximate initial gross figure without house rent allowance, the HRA rule and the pension scheme. Read the Assistant advertisement for the same items.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Starting basic pay and scale | The first stage and the steps of the scale; this is your basic pay. |
| Approximate initial gross | RBI's own estimate for that recruitment year, which moves with allowance rates. |
| House rent allowance | Whether it is paid when you are not in Bank accommodation, and at what rate. |
| Pension scheme | Which scheme applies to new joiners. |
| Office | The RBI office you are applying to, because recruitment is office-wise. |
Compare it with the Grade B salary, which does carry the advertisement's figures, and with the clerical scales in IBPS Clerk and SBI Junior Associate. The salary hub explains how to read a scale.
Office-wise recruitment and the language test
RBI Assistant vacancies are advertised office by office. For Tamil Nadu and Puducherry the office is Chennai. You choose the office when you apply, cut-offs are applied office-wise and category-wise, and after the Mains selected candidates take a Language Proficiency Test (LPT) in the language of that State. Your posting is therefore tied to the office you applied for.
Panel Year 2025: how the exams ran
The Panel Year 2025 exams were held in 2026: Prelims on 11, 13 and 30 April 2026 and Mains on 7 June 2026.
- Prelims: English 30 questions, Numerical Ability 35 and Reasoning 35, for 100 marks in 60 minutes.
- Mains: five tests of 40 questions and 40 marks each, separately timed: Reasoning (30 minutes), English Language (30), Numerical Ability (30), General Awareness (25) and Computer Knowledge (20). That is 200 questions for 200 marks in 135 minutes, with five options per question and a penalty of one-quarter of the marks for a wrong answer.
- No interview: the stages are Prelims, Mains and the language test.
Questions appear in English and the language applicable to the office, except the English test. RBI's own result notice says the exam body does not give question papers to the Bank, so any "previous papers" in circulation are memory-based. The RBI Assistant exam guide covers the full pattern.
Frequently asked questions
What is the starting salary of an RBI Assistant?
It is printed in the pay clause of the advertisement for your recruitment year. Read that clause rather than a third-party estimate, and note that RBI also states an approximate gross figure there.
Does RBI Assistant have an interview?
No. The stages are Prelims, Mains and the Language Proficiency Test.
Can I apply to any RBI office?
You choose one office at application and compete for vacancies there. For Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, that is the Chennai office.
